Complexity is a ubiquitous phenomenon in physiology that allows living systems to adapt to external perturbations. Fractal structures, self-organization, nonlinearity, interactions at different scales, and interconnections among systems through anatomical and functional networks, may originate complexity. Biomedical signals from physiological systems may carry information about the system complexity useful to identify physiological states, monitor health, and predict pathological events. Therefore, complexity analysis of biomedical signals is a rapidly evolving field aimed at extracting information on the physiological systems. This book consists of 16 contributions from authors with a strong scientific background in biomedical signals analysis. It includes reviews on the state-of-the-art of complexity studies in specific medical applications, new methods to improve complexity quantifiers, and novel complexity analyses in physiological or clinical scenarios. It presents a wide spectrum of methods investigating the entropic properties, multifractal structure, self-organized criticality, and information dynamics of biomedical signals touching upon three physiological areas: the cardiovascular system, the central nervous system, the heart-brain interactions. The book is aimed at experienced researchers in signal analysis and presents the latest trends in the complexity methods in physiology and medicine with the hope of inspiring future works advancing this fascinating area of research.

In order not to intimidate students by a too abstract approach, this textbook on linear algebra is written to be easy to digest by non-mathematicians. It introduces the concepts of vector spaces and mappings between them without dwelling on statements such as theorems and proofs too much. It is also designed to be self-contained, so no other material is required for an understanding of the topics covered. As the basis for courses on space and atmospheric science, remote sensing, geographic information systems, meteorology, climate and satellite communications at UN-affiliated regional centers, various applications of the formal theory are discussed as well. These include differential equations, statistics, optimization and some engineering-motivated problems in physics.

Before arriving in the field of communication, Larry Gross was a psychology student at Brandeis University; Creativity: Process and Personality was Gross’s undergraduate thesis at Brandeis, completed in 1964. This mediastudies.press edition is the initial publication of that undergraduate thesis, with a new preface by Gross himself. Creativity: Process and Personality finds Gross exploring the nature of creativity by interviewing some of the era’s most noteworthy experts in psychology, including Herbert Simon, Milton Rokeach, Abraham Maslow, David McClelland, Jerome Bruner, and B. F. Skinner. The result of Gross’s interviews is a nuanced and multi-perspectival set of interlocking chapters, each of which probes the psychological, social, and cultural aspects of creativity. Creativity: Process and Personality remains a provocative consideration of how creativity takes form, while also operating as a revealing snapshot of mid-twentieth century psychological thought.

Efficient separation techniques play an important role in the process of resource recovery, and these techniques include physical, chemical, physicochemical, and/or biological methods that are selected for their low cost and low energy consumption and for being free of secondary pollution. Additionally, the highest possible value added of the separated products is obtained to enhance the economy. This reprint presents novel separation technologies involving the recovery of extracellular polymeric substances, calcium alginate in wastewater treatment, plasmid DNA in gene therapy, lactose in the dairy industry, lactic acid in the fermented broth of kitchen waste, phenylalanine losses in neutralization dialysis, the removal of secondary effluent organic matter, acetaldehyde in the atmosphere, and the purification of the liquid fraction of digestates.

The article presents the outcomes of a questionnaire research among students on the occasion of the climate summit COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021. The survey concerned the awareness of the event and sources mentioned in this context as well as the general relevance of the issue of climate change from the perspective of young persons and the question, who in their opinion should change something to limit climate change. The aim of the survey research was (beyond information gathering) to analyse, in what way we are able to refer to such a complex question as climate change and how the character of media sources currently used by young persons interacts with the process of generating awareness of this existential issue. Due to the research method and mostly open-ended questions the analysed data material allows to observe in which way the character of the communication process and its current condition shape the possibility of referring to the issue of climate change on the level of social communication. This allows to draw conclusions concerning the interaction between the sphere of social communication and (the possible contribution of) communication design for introducing change into the social context.

Sustained population studies of fertility over the last two centuries have come to question the extent to which trends in low fertility may be understood as universal. Improved knowledge of variations within countries and between communities has revealed heterogeneity in reproductive behaviours at sub-national levels – whether before, during, or after the so-called ‘fertility transition’. Population studies have also come to give more attention to the role of structural inequalities, including around family, class, gender, and health, and of people’s diverse and changing reproductive strategies that underpin varying low fertilities at sub-national levels. This collection develops compositional demography approaches to address the advancements in sub-national variations. It brings together studies in anthropology, demography, history, and sociology, that have together developed an analytical lens for examining the low fertility phenomenon not as a mere average but as a composite of different reproductive behaviours and regimes. The volume is among the first to collect historical patterns of low fertilities and their underlying structural conditions in a long-term comparative perspective. It is also the first to detail comprehensively the compositional demography approach, which can be also applied to the study of various demographic phenomena around fertility, mortality, ageing, migration, and other population issues.

This book, translated by Lev Blumenfeld, contains a synchronic grammar and grammatical dictionaries of Old Church Slavic. The framework is based on a substantially revised version of the classical descriptive methodology. The intent is to improve on the classical monographs by Vaillant, Diels, Lunt in the direction of utmost completeness, explicitness, and deliberate consistency between the grammatical structure, the corpus of texts (limited to the seven oldest OCS manuscripts), and the dictionaries. The grammar is intended as a set of rules that provide a complete characterization of any OCS wordform. Peculiarities in the language of each source are described as systematic departures from canonical OCS, a conventional constructed variety primarily described by the grammar. The book is addressed to linguists working in Slavic studies, as well as to specialists in the general theory of grammar, especially phonologists and morphologists. Data from the dictionaries are freely available as a searchable database online here.

Portrayals of love are everywhere in films and series. However, this apparent ubiquity is accompanied by a lack of understanding for the interconnection between love, its portrayal, and the medium of the moving picture. In contrast, this book presents a poetological theory and analysis of the time-forming connections between production processes – in order to ultimately provide an insight into the contemporary intimacies of the moving picture.

Whether in outwardly- or inwardly-directed ceremonies and rituals, the appearances of rulers and their court states, as well as other institutions of power, took place under unique acoustic conditions. The latter, in turn, were embedded not only in an intermedial and sensory structure, but also in a complex system of symbols and signs that conveyed certain messages or evoked particular associations. The contributions to this conference volume are devoted to these multi-layered connections and constellations, their manifestations in sound and silence, their distinctive power and their inherent specifics. The approach to the topic is interdisciplinary and multi-perspective as well as inter-, cross-, and transcultural and focuses on various courtly and urban instances of power between Ragusa, the Ottoman Empire, Habsburg-Burgundy, China, and other cultures at the turn of the 14th century to the beginning of the 18th century.

"A Long Way to Go: Irregular Migration Patterns, Processes, Drivers and Decision-making presents the findings of a unique migration research program harnessing work of some of the leading international and Australian migration researchers on the challenging and complex topic of irregular maritime migration. The book brings together selected findings of the research program, and in doing so it contributes to the ongoing academic and policy discourses by providing findings from rigorous quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research to support a better understanding of the dynamics of irregular migration and their potential policy implications. Stemming from the 2012 Expert Panel on Asylum Seekers report, the Irregular Migration Research Program commissioned 26 international research projects involving 17 academic principal researchers, along with private sector specialist researchers, international organisations and policy think tanks. The centrepiece of the research program was a multi-year collaborative partnership between the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and The Australian National University’s Crawford School of Public Policy. Under this partnership, empirical research on international irregular migration was commissioned from migration researchers in Australia, Indonesia, Iran, the Netherlands, Sri Lanka and Switzerland.
