The area that constitutes the Austrian federal province of Burgenland belonged to the Hungarian part of the Habsburg empire until the end of World War I. This book helps us realize that geographical knowledge does not come ready-made. Instead, it is created by knowledge makers: geographers, historians, statisticians etc. This knowledge-making helped to legitimatize the area transferred between Austria and Hungary, shape the Burgenland identity, and depict its geopolitical role in the rise of national socialism. This book is about how those studying Burgenland, the creators of its geographical knowledge, saw and represented the province. It explores how they grasped the geographical characteristics of the region through their own perspective, influenced by their own professional positions, individual careers, motivations, and by the broader historical and social medium. The way the area between the provinces of Lower Austria and Styria came about as Burgenland is enthralling, as is how the people there experienced this change of sovereignty and how everyday social and economic relationships were transformed. Tracing the geographical discourses in the interwar period and beyond, the book argues that Burgenland became a successful geographical project, and departs from thoughts of subdivision, unviability, and backwardness, concentrating instead on fertility, unity, and modernization.

The ebook edition of this title is Open Access and freely available to read online. The importance of ethical practices and a sustainable competitive position is being increasingly emphasised by all types of business and across all industries. The chapters collected in Creating a Sustainable Competitive Position discuss how international firms work with sustainable strategies and their relationship with the society and environment while exploring the different opportunities and challenges. While good transparent ethical behaviour improves a company’s reputation and thus competitive position, unethical and/or illegitimate behaviour such as environmental exploitation and corruption can damage a firm’s global reputation. Several case studies from different markets demonstrate how this sustainable competitive position can be achieved by international firms operating in a global market. Creating a Sustainable Competitive Position includes research-based cases highlighting different sustainability challenges as well as theory-based discussions around how firms can manage a multi-stakeholder perspective in relation to performance. The extensive research within this volumeof International Business and Management makes it an important read for both managers, leaders and researchers in the area of strategy, offering ways to stay ahead of the competition.

Precision agriculture (PA) involves the application of technologies and agronomic principles to manage spatial and temporal variation associated with all aspects of agricultural production in order to improve crop performance and environmental quality. The focus of this book is to introduce a non-specialist audience to the the role of PA in food security, environmental protection, and sustainable use of natural resources, as well as its economic benefits. The technologies covered include yield monitors and remote sensing, and the key agronomic principles addressed are the optimal delivery of fertilizers, water and pesticides to crops only when and where these are required. As a result, it is shown that both food production and resource efficiency can be maximized, without waste or damage to the environment, such as can occur from excessive fertilizer or pesticide applications. The authors of necessity describe some technicalities about PA, but the overall aim is to introduce readers who are unfamiliar with PA to this very broad subject and to demonstrate the potential impact of PA on the environment and economy. How do children learn about the spaces in which they live, play, and grow? Built Environment Education for Children and Youth is an essential guide to a dynamic yet fragmented field, bringing together educators, architects, spatial designers and planners, as well as cultural practitioners working in museums, schools, universities, architecture centres, professional bodies, networks and private practice, to explore how young people can meaningfully engage with their built environments. By engaging with the built environment, young people develop agency and spatial literacy that support their sense of belonging, underpin civic participation, and open up more equitable possibilities for shaping the places they inhabit. Grounded in a broad international evidence base – drawing on an analysis of 400+ Built Environment Education initiatives in institutional settings, 30 practitioner interviews and 15 in-depth studies – this book reflects BEE state of the art practice across world regions and contexts. Depicting innovative pedagogies and real-world examples, it charts a path towards a more cohesive and inclusive approach to built environment education and Baukultur. Whether you’re an educator, designer, planner or policymaker, this engaging resource will inspire you to shape the future of built environment education – by strengthening the next generation’s capacity to understand and shape place, recognising children as spatial agents in their own right.

How is creativity created in fashion? Judith Nyfeler examines the actors involved along with their specific organizational methods (routines, technologies, projects, cooperations) and linguistic expressions (narratives, shows, storytelling). It turns out that instead of constantly renewing, variants are formed, whereby the formal facade of creativity and the operative activities of production are organizationally resolved from each other. The formation of variants is enhanced by language elements, which are always worked on, which in turn represents the basis for change as well as stability in fashion.

This open access book considers the role of uncertainty in the design and development of large-scale engineering systems. The focus of the book is the safe behaviour of nuclear power plants in both routine operations and in incident situations. The book introduces various types of uncertainty and addresses the extent to which uncertainties may be reduced. The role of multiple dimensions of uncertainty is discussed, as is the importance of modern computational techniques in handling large data sets. Modern IT also provides engineers with new tools, such as digital twins with the potential to greatly reduce cost both in design and in operations. The book focuses on both system safety and efficiency and, to do this, reference is made to the Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactor (AGR). The AGR is a mature established system through which the book elucidates various key concepts and ideas. As well as being of interest to those working in the nuclear industry, the book is likely to appeal to those working in other safety critical engineering sectors and, for example, reference is made to experiences in aviation and railway engineering. This is neither a text book nor a review, it is a primer for those seeking an introduction to modern approaches to uncertainty.

This paper suggests the potential application of generative artificial intelligence-based image generation technology in the field of architecture, for early phase shape planning, using the styles of renowned architects. The study employed the following approaches: 1) Intensive image generation based on the styles of 20 architects to test the AI's recognition ability and image quality. 2) Additional training was conducted for architects with low recognition rates to construct an enhanced learning model in the quality of image generation. 3) In addition to generating architectural visualization images using existing architects' design styles, alternative styles were proposed through design combinations, aiming to concretize ambiguous idea communication in the early stages of design and enhance its efficiency. The study sheds light on the future prospects of applying this generative AI model in the field of architecture

Since the growth of social media, human communication has become much more visual. This book presents a scholarly analysis of the images people post on a regular basis to Facebook. By including hundreds of examples, readers can see for themselves the differences between postings from a village north of London, and those from a small town in Trinidad. Why do women respond so differently to becoming a mother in England from the way they do in Trinidad? How are values such as carnival and suburbia expressed visually? Based on an examination of over 20,000 images, the authors argue that phenomena such as selfies and memes must be analysed in their local context. The book aims to highlight the importance of visual images today in patrolling and controlling the moral values of populations, and explores the changing role of photography from that of recording and representation, to that of communication, where an image not only documents an experience but also enhances it, making the moment itself more exciting.

In this open access book, Mark Boone explains the theology of desire developed in a cross-section of Augustine’s On the True Religion, On the Nature of Good, On Free Choice of the Will, On the Teacher, On the Usefulness of Believing, On the Good of Marriage, Enchiridion, and Confessions. Throughout his writings and in many ways, Augustine develops a Platonically informed, yet distinctively Christian, account of desire. Human desire should respond to the goodness inherent in things, loving the greatest good above all and great goods more than lesser goods. Above all, we should love God and souls. Sin, an inappropriate desire for lesser goods, is healed by the redemption of Christ. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by Hong Kong Baptist University

"The volume ""lern.medien.werk.statt"" is dedicated to the discussion of university learning workshops about their different concepts and their different self-image. In addition, the focus is explicitly on the topic of university learning workshops and digitality. Theoretical and conceptual connections between the discourses on learning workshops and media education will be explored, as well as possible incompatibilities, in an attempt to answer the following questions: - How can digital media be systematically integrated as tools to support free experimentation in learning workshops? - How can media education and in particular the use of digital media be meaningfully integrated into learning workshop concepts? - How does the work with (digital) media in the learning workshop practice take shape in concrete terms? The series "" Lernen und Studieren in Lernwerkstätten – Impulse für Theorie und Praxis"" is edited by Barbara Müller-Naendrup, Hartmut Wedekind, Markus Peschel and Eva Franz. The editors Barbara Holub, Klaus Himpsl-Gutermann, Monika Musilek-Hofer, Andrea Varelija-Gerber, Nina Grünberger work at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Education (IBS) at the Vienna University of Teacher Education. Katharina Mittlböck (formerly also PH Vienna) works at the University of Innsbruck. "
