The here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing.

Accessible environments enable people with impairments to participate in social life. But what exactly does accessibility mean? What makes a condition in the environment a barrier? What aspects determine whether environments are conducive or obstructive to social participation? How can these aspects be measured, assessed and classified? What does this mean for the planning and assessment of designed environments? The contributions to the book deal with these questions from different disciplinary perspectives. They show the multi-layeredness and complexity of the topic of accessibility. The book is intended to give substance to the discussion on barriers and accessibility - a field that is still little researched - and to inspire interdisciplinary dialogue and reflection on practice.

The purpose of this book is the study of the issue of the administration of foreign goods and the consequent accountability that has only had partial treatments, recognizing the existence of different types of accountability, determined by the class of the operations carried out and byThe legal nature of the relations that originate this obligation. The legal institutions from which the accountability follows, which with the exception of guardianship and the "ab intestate" succession, especially considered in the Civil Procedure Law, barely extends the legislator on such obligation, limiting himself,If perhaps, to establish it by assuming what it consists of. The purpose pursued has been to treat, under a unitary concept, the accountability enforceable in cases of administration of foreign goods; That is, to seek its common and fundamental notes, since there is not yet a general regime of application to all cases of accountability, it is not impossible to discover, in the different cases in which it occurs, certain common elements and characters. It should be noted the absence of specific bibliography that unitaryly treat accountability, since when studyThat for his study he has been supported by the jurisprudence from which valuable teachings have been taken, since, when facing the specific case, they use induction, achieving a general rule, or part of it, presupposing a previous ideaLighting under the principles that inspire the law, and constitutive of general principles of law. Finally, I want to show my thanks to two distinguished teachers, whose memory I bring here up.To Dr. D. Manuel Batlle Vázquez, Professor of Civil Law at the University of Murcia, who was director of my doctoral thesis, an initial embryo of this book. And Dr. D. Manuel Albaladejo García, Professor of Civil Law of the Complutense University of Madrid for his interest in the publication of the aforementioned thesis, which was published under his auspices in the publishing house of Private Law Magazine (Edersa).Leaving my thanks to both teachers also for their influence and help in my academic training, in which they left deep mark.

In a famous statement, Ulrich Wilcken argues that each historian has his own Alexander. A critical examination of the traditions in Historiographic Alexander allows to reconsider both our ideas of alterity and success, and how great can be a human being, or to what extent what was great in the past still has to be accepted as such in our present days. To sum up, to revisit Alexander from the eyes of the historians in the Contemporary Age offers a genuine opportunity to rethink History as such, and to evaluate how can we imagine new ways to explain the past in order to build a rich appreciation of the present in order to imagine brand new futures. The aim of the following pages is to review Alexander’s portraits and concerns in the works and scopes of the more recent historical traditions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

"This volume considers the linguistic borders between languages and dialects, as well as the administrative, cultural and mental borders that reflect or affect linguistic ones; it comprises eight articles examining the mental borders between dialects, dialect continua and areas of mixed dialect, language ideologies, language mixing and contact-induced language change. The book opens with Dennis R. Preston’s review article on perceptual dialectology, showing how this field of study provides insights on laymen’s perceptions about dialect boundaries, and how such perceptions explain regional and social variation. Johanna Laakso problematizes the common notion of languages as having clear-cut boundaries and stresses the artificialness and conventionality of linguistic borders. Vesa Koivisto introduces the Border Karelian dialects as an example of language and dialect mixing. Marjatta Palander and Helka Riionheimo’s article examines the mental boundaries between Finnish and Karelian, demonstrated by the informants when recalling their fading memories of a lost mother tongue. Niina Kunnas focuses on how speakers of White Sea Karelian perceive the boundaries between their language and other varieties. Within the framework of language ideology, Tamás Péter Szabó highlights the ways in which linguistic borders are interactionally (co)constructed in the school environment in Hungary and Finland. Anna-Riitta Lindgren and Leena Niiranen present a contact-linguistic study investigating the vocabulary of Kven, a variety lying on the fuzzy boundary of a language and a dialect. Finally, Vesa Jarva and Jenni Mikkonen approach demographically manifested linguistic boundaries by examining the Old Helsinki slang, a mixture of lexical features derived from Finnish and Swedish. Together, the articles paint a picture of a multidimensional, multilingual, variable and ever-changing linguistic reality where diverse borders, boundaries and barriers meet, intertwine and cross each other. As a whole, the articles also seek to cross disciplinary and methodological boundaries and present new perspectives on earlier studies.

An Open Access edition of this book is available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library. Historically and contemporarily, politically and literarily, Haiti has long been relegated to the margins of the so-called 'New World.' Marked by exceptionalism, the voices of some of its most important writers have consequently been muted by the geopolitical realities of the nation's fraught history. In Haiti Unbound, Kaiama L. Glover offers a close look at the works of three such writers: the Haitian Spiralists Frankétienne, Jean-Claude Fignolé, and René Philoctète. While Spiralism has been acknowledged by scholars and regional writer-intellectuals alike as a crucial contribution to the French-speaking Caribbean literary tradition, the Spiralist ethic-aesthetic not yet been given the sustained attention of a full-length study. Glover's book represents the first effort in any language to consider the works of the three Spiralist authors both individually and collectively, and so fills an astonishingly empty place in the assessment of postcolonial Caribbean aesthetics. Touching on the role and destiny of Haiti in the Americas, Haiti Unbound engages with long-standing issues of imperialism and resistance culture in the transatlantic world. Glover's timely project emphatically articulates Haiti's regional and global centrality, combining vital 'big picture' reflections on the field of postcolonial studies with elegant close-reading-based analyses of the philosophical perspective and creative practice of a distinctively Haitian literary phenomenon. Most importantly perhaps, the book advocates for the inclusion of three largely unrecognized voices in the disturbingly fixed roster of writer-intellectuals that have thus far interested theorists of postcolonial (Francophone) literature. Providing insightful and sophisticated blueprints for the reading and teaching of the Spiralists' prose fiction, Haiti Unbound will serve as a point of reference for the works of these authors and for the singular socio-political space out of and within which they write.

Epdf available Open Access under CC-BY-NC licence. There is a demand for a new narrative to enable us to escape from the crisis in our society. This book argues that we need to start with the society we want, rather than framing poverty as a problem to be solved. It calls for a bold forward-looking social policy that addresses continuing austerity, under-resourced organisations and a lack of social solidarity. Based on a research programme carried out by the Webb Memorial Trust involving leading organisations, academics, community activists, children, and surveys of more than 12,000 people living in poverty, a key theme is power which shows that the way forward is to increase people’s sense of agency in building the society that they want.

All discussion about privatization and welfare is about private and public actors, as if they were opposites. Professional analyses of competition or innovation always do the same: we look for differences between private and public. We are either disappointed or pleased that in Norway quality is largely the same, and the price you and I pay is always exactly the same when we need public welfare services—even if the providers are private. Could there be something wrong with the analysis? Welfare and Profit flips the debate and shows why it matters little who produces the service. Norwegian welfare services are run in such a way that it matters little whether the kindergarten your child attends, or the nursing home where your grandmother lives, is operated by a public or municipal entity. What you pay and what you get are largely the same. The explanation lies in regulation and politics. So why should we allow private companies with profits and dividends into the welfare state if price and quality are regulated anyway? The answer is that Norwegian welfare services can go in two directions: slow deterioration or continuous improvement. We avoid deterioration if politicians and leaders stimulate improvement. And resources in the private sector must be used to achieve this. It is not easy. The welfare state must always create good services and equal worth for all, regardless of personal resources and economic ability. Development through competition and innovation requires good regulation, good political steering, and good leadership. The book shifts focus from the question of whether we should have private producers to how society can stimulate innovation and development. The title “Welfare and Profit” has a double meaning. Is there a conflict between profit and welfare? Can we get welfare without profit? Or should welfare governance aim to achieve gains—for users, for providers, and for society? These are fundamental political dilemmas, but this book seeks to show a path where welfare and profit can work together. The book is intended for those who are skeptical of simple answers to complex questions. Hopefully it will reach students and professionals, leaders and politicians. The hope is that the reader sees that private companies can lift welfare services. They can contribute to continuous improvement. But to make that happen, what is needed above all is better governance and leadership.

The re-election of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for a sixth term in August 2020 triggered a deep political crisis in the country and strong post-electoral mobilisation for several months. The stabilisation of the facade restored by violent repression, the new constitutional reform of 2022 and the geopolitical crisis caused by the war in Ukraine all contributed to freezing the situation without the crisis being resolved in substance. How should the events of 2020 be interpreted? What long-term impact will these events have on the development of the regime and Belarusian society? This book brings together a series of contributions that reflect on society, power, law and international relations as explanatory factors of this political crisis and its consequences. While the Belarusian national and political awakening has indeed taken place, the quest for democracy is still emerging, and the new division of Europe is likely to make this quest much more difficult, though not impossible.
