This book argues that premodern societies were characterized by the quest for “virtue.” The concept of virtue, complicated and much fought-over, permeated society, encouraging wisdom, courage, and justice, while simultaneously legitimizing social hierarchies based on sex and nationality. By examining pedagogical texts, rituals, performances, and images, this book illuminates the evolution of virtue through time, helping readers understand the guiding principles of historical action.

This collection of essays explores processes of innovation in Greco-Roman technology and science. It uses the concept of ‘anchoring’ to investigate the microhistories of technological and scientific practices and ideas. The volume combines broad, theoretical essays with more targeted case studies of individual inventions and innovations. In doing so, it moves beyond the emphasis on achievement that has traditionally characterized modern scholarship on ancient technology and science. Instead, the chapters of this volume analyse the manifold ways in which new technologies and ideas were anchored in what was already known and familiar, and highlight how, once familiar, technologies and ideas could themselves become anchoring points for inventions and innovations.

Dotawo: A Journal of Nubian Studies offers a platform in which the old meets the new, in which archaeological, papyrological, and philological research into Meroitic, Old Nubian, Coptic, Greek, and Arabic sources confront current investigations in modern anthropology and ethnography, Nilo-Saharan linguistics, and the critical and theoretical approaches of postcolonial and African studies. Dotawo gives a common home to the past, present, and future of one of the richest areas of research in African studies. It offers a crossroads where papyrus can meet the internet, scribes meet critical thinkers, and the promises of growing nations meet the accomplishments of older kingdoms. The ninth issue of Dotawo takes a long-term perspective on Nubian houses and households to explore the distinctive material, visual, and phenomenological worlds of Nubian homescapes. A “homescape” is an array of features related to the home. It is the socially constructed space of human activity, understood as having spatial, conceptual, and emotional boundaries and delimitations. Contributors to this volume embrace the dichotomy of homescapes, demonstrating how Nubians adapt their homescapes over time and space even while adhering to a core identity. The cross-disciplinary contributions to this volume include sociological, anthropological, archaeological, and linguistic approaches to the topic, as well as photographic essays, artwork, and fiction.

Finite fossil resources require the exploitation of alternative energy sources like photovoltaics. A methodology for the economic potential assessment of photovoltaic installations on buildings including building facades has been developed. It is based on detailed irradiation simulations and a combination of geographically referenced and statistical data and has been applied to the German building stock for 2015. A prognosis for the potential development until 2050 is given.

“Fundamentals of Sports Rehabilitation: A Multidisciplinary Perspective” is a work conceived with the aim of revitalizing the habit of reading, understood as an essential tool for academic and professional growth. In a context where reading has been sidelined, the book invites readers to rediscover the value of pausing on each page to reflect, learn, and build collective knowledge. The work is structured in three volumes that address the fundamentals of physical health and sports activity, assessment and diagnostic processes, and rehabilitation and readaptation strategies. Its content is geared toward students and professionals in the health sciences related to the field of sports, with the goal of fostering interdisciplinary work that integrates diverse perspectives for the benefit of athletes and clinical practice. A distinctive feature of this project is the voluntary participation of a multidisciplinary team of specialists, who answered the call to contribute their knowledge and experiences to shape a work that is both rigorous and accessible. This joint effort reflects the conviction that knowledge is strengthened when it is shared and built collaboratively.

The first part of the Trilogy explicates the bedrock conviction that women, men and queer realize their physical, psychic, social and spiritual integrity with the help of speech acts. I describe speech acts as social choices of speakers and listeners who reciprocally enhance their equal dignity, freedom and rights in a discourse. I make clear that the investigation of the state of the integrity of the individual person is a matter for empirical science; I call the experience to be consciously enjoying my integrity, the mystical experience. In the second part of the Trilogy, I talk about personal mystical experiences, meditations and about basic convictions concerning my Christian faith. As validity condition of the validity of any religious claim, I discuss their correspondence with the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, notably the recognition and respect of the equal dignity, freedom and rights of all women, men and queer. The third part of the Trilogy completes my systematic investigation of the official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church as promoted in the 16 documents of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). A Council serves the Roman Catholic Church to describe the essence and purpose of her being and I analyze this purpose and essence within the historical context of the making of the 16 texts of the Second Vatican Council. My investigation shows that throughout the documents there is an ambivalent parallelism between two contradicting descriptions of the Roman Catholic Church. The texts show that there is the social institution of the Roman Catholic Church as an absolute monarchy with an authoritarian and discriminating hierarchical structure and that there is the faith institution of the Roman Catholic Church as the People of God and the Gospel of the just world of Jesus Christ. I hold that the social institution of the Roman Catholic Church needs to change, because of the essence and purpose of a Church as a community of faithful. I present a social model for the Church that realizes the dignity of the individual faithful as the social choice of the individual woman, man and queer. Dignity includes the social choice to give away some freedom and rights to women, men and queer as possibility condition for the social realization of their dignity. Giving away something of my freedom and rights for the social realization of the dignity of others enhances the dignity of both, my dignity and the dignity of the others. This mutual enhancement of dignity constitutes not only a basic function for operating democracies but constitutes also a basic element of the just world of God.

Sometimes tragedies that have little to distinguish them from a wide range of similar events and which can make no claim to record numbers of casualties or destructive impact go down in history as fundamental and emblematic. This is the case of two of the airstrikes discussed in this volume: Barcelona and Dresden. Other tragedies, however, are sometimes obscured by circumstances elsewhere. This is the case of the “other Guernicas”: that is to say, the bombings of Otxandio, Durango and Elorrio in Biscay. They are good examples not only of the brutality inherent in all wars and of how methods of combat become increasingly barbaric as conflicts wear on but also of the way in which some circumstances push events to the forefront of history and make them emblematic.

Making illegal residence unattractive is a way for Western governments to limit migration from non-Western countries. Focusing on Dutch neighbourhoods with substantial levels of unauthorised migrants, Illegal Residence and Public Safety in the Netherlands examines how restrictive immigration policy influences immigrant crime and perceived neighborhood security. Salient questions arise. To what extent, and under which conditions, do illegal residence and illegal migration impact public safety? Does having illegal residence status influence how people observe or break the law and other social rules? Do their ties with established groups, such as legal migrants, employers and partners, have any sway? Answers to these issues begin surfacing in this rich combination of quantitative information, comprising police figures and surveys on victimisation, and qualitative sources, including interviews at the Dutch Aliens Custody and urban field research.

This book represents a case study based overview of many different aspects of drug development, ranging from target identification and characterization to chemical optimization for efficacy and safety, as well as bioproduction of natural products utilizing for example lichen. In the last section, special aspects of the formal drug development process are discussed. Since drug development is a highly complex multidisciplinary process, case studies are an excellent tool to obtain insight in this field. While each chapter gives specific insight and may be read as an independent source of information, the whole book represents a unique collection of different facets giving insight in the complexity of drug development.
