This book celebrates the work and career of the internationally renowned art historian, David Bindman, on the occasion of his 75th birthday, and is above all a tribute to him from his former students and colleagues. With essays on sculpture, drawings, watercolours and prints, the volume reflects the extraordinary range of Bindman’s knowledge of works of art and his impact through his teaching and research on the understanding of British and European artistic developments from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. The essays cast light on questions of technique and stylistic change, patronage, collecting and iconography, and engage with issues such as the representation of race, gender, sexuality, political violence and propaganda, exile, and notions of the canon. The artists discussed here include Hogarth, Blake, Roubiliac, Thorvaldsen and Canova, all subjects of books by David Bindman, as well as Morland, Rowlandson, Gillray, Millais, Munch, Nevinson, and Heartfield.

This Research Topic aims to showcase the state of the art in language research while celebrating the 25th anniversary of the tremendously influential work of the PDP group, and the 50th anniversary of the perceptron. Although PDP models are often the gold standard to which new models are compared, the scope of this Research Topic is not constrained to connectionist models. Instead, we aimed to create a landmark forum in which experts in the field define the state of the art and future directions of the psychological processes underlying language learning and use, broadly defined. We thus called for papers involving computational modeling and original research as well as technical, philosophical, or historical discussions pertaining to models of cognition. We especially encouraged submissions aimed at contrasting different computational frameworks, and their relationship to imaging and behavioral data.

We live at the dawn of the hyper-technological era. Digital innovation is becoming increasingly intertwined with the biological dimension, influencing our languages, emotions and thoughts. The transformations of the relationship between human being and machine are triggering scientific-humanistic reflections useful for developing new paradigms of interpretation of an extended reality that overlaps the physical and virtual worlds. The human being is projected into an onlife dimension, where ICTs increasingly influence who we are, how we socialise, how we conceive reality and how we interact with it. Four major transformations emerge as a result: the blurring of the distinction between reality and virtuality; the blurring of the distinction between human being, machine and nature; the inversion from scarcity to abundance of information; and the shift from the primacy of things, properties and binary relationships in their own right, to the primacy of interactions, processes and networks (Floridi, 2014). Pedagogy of adolescence, in particular, has the mandate to provide specific studies and research to learn more about the human beings transformations and learning processes in the age of development by taking an interdisciplinary look at the fluctuations of a liquid society.

Written specifically to cover the A2 component of the GCE Government and Politics A-level, this book is a comprehensive introduction to the political ideas and movements that have shaped the modern world. Underpinned by the work of major thinkers such as Hobbes, Locke, Marx, Mill, Weber and others, the first half of the book looks at political concepts including the state and sovereignty, the nation, democracy, representation and legitimacy, freedom, equality and rights, obligation and citizenship. There is also a specific chapter which addresses the role of ideology in the shaping of politics and society. The second half of the book addresses traditional theoretical subjects such as socialism, Marxism and nationalism, before moving on to more contemporary movements such as environmentalism, ecologism and feminism. The subject is covered in a clear, accessible style, and includes a number of student-friendly features, such as chapter summaries, key points to consider, definitions and tips for further sources of information. There is a definite need for a text of this kind. It will be invaluable for students of government and politics at introductory level.

Infection is a common clinical condition that may cause local inflammation but, in some cases, can lead to systemic inflammation, with sepsis and organ dysfunction. Septic shock is a condition of inadequate tissue perfusion and cellular use of oxygen due to the cytotoxic action of bacterial toxins. There is no relationship between the pathological characteristics and the severity of the primary septic outbreak and the development of septic shock, and the time that elapses until the start of the shock is not predictable. Thus, knowledge of the pathophysiology of septic shock is fundamental for treatment. This book presents a comprehensive overview of infectious agents and their therapeutic control, pathological conditions with infective etiology such as diabetic foot osteomyelitis and infections in neurosurgery, and the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of sepsis.

This volume investigates the medieval cold case of the murder of inquisitor Peter of Verona (1252), who quickly became Saint Peter Martyr (1253) and the first inquisitor-saint of the Roman Catholic Church. Beyond historiographical myths, the contributions show the developments—sometimes paradoxical—of a death that was instrumental in consolidating the medieval officium fidei. The multidisciplinary approach demonstrates the richness of possible analyses for examining the past through what has survived: papal letters, fragments of inquisitorial trials, painted and sculpted images, account books, notarial documentation, liturgical texts, sermons, objects—weapons of the crime and coins—and bone remains, namely the skull, connected to one who was immediately considered a "martyr of the faith" whose cult, however, struggled to become established.

With the advent of the atomic force microscope (AFM) came an extremely valuable analytical resource and technique useful for the qualitative and quantitative surface analysis with sub-nanometer resolution. In addition, samples studied with an AFM do not require any special pretreatments that may alter or damage the sample and permits a three dimensional investigation of the surface. This book presents a collection of current research from scientists throughout the world that employ atomic force microscopy in their investigations. The technique has become widely accepted and used in obtaining valuable data in a wide variety of fields. It is impressive to see how, in a short time period since its development in 1986, it has proliferated and found many uses throughout manufacturing, research and development.

This book invites a reconsideration of agricultural production paradigms in a context where consumers demand high-quality food cultivated under environmentally responsible practices. Focusing on the Dudaim variety, considered a highly valuable agricultural heritage, the work demonstrates how the use of compost, bokashi, and biol not only increases crop productivity but also strengthens the sustainability of agricultural systems. The study was conducted in the canton of Buena Fe, Los Ríos province, Ecuador, a region recognized for its productive richness and as a privileged setting for innovation and tradition. The research, designed under a rigorous experimental model, yields revealing results. Compost enhances vegetative growth and fruit weight, bokashi improves pulp quality and melon diameter, while biol increases sweetness and soluble solids, a key attribute for meeting increasingly demanding markets. These findings go beyond the academic sphere, providing farmers with practical tools to decide which fertilizer to use according to their production goals, optimizing resources and reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers that have degraded soils and increased costs. More than a technical text, this book is a manifesto for smart agriculture, capable of balancing tradition, science, and sustainability. From the agricultural heart of Los Ríos, it demonstrates that the Dudaim melon can drive competitiveness, resilience, and cultural pride. In this way, the work charts an inspiring path toward profitable and environmentally respectful production systems.

Employee innovations are innovations that are created and implemented from the bottom up by employees who are not formally assigned to innovation-related roles within an organization. As practice demonstrates, the generation of ideas does not guarantee their subsequent adoption within the organization. What is crucial is their implementation and sustained use in the form of so-called organizational routines. The process through which grassroots innovative ideas become organizational routines, referred to as the Transformation of Employee Innovation into an Organizational Routine, is made possible by specific factors. These factors may either facilitate or hinder the transformation process. In this monograph, the Author focuses on addressing three main research questions: How does the process of Transforming Employee Innovation into an Organizational Routine unfold? What factors determine (support or hinder) this Transformation? Which categories of determining factors (supporting or hindering) can be identified within the Transformation process? A deeper understanding of the Transformation process is important for both theoretical knowledge and business practice. From a theoretical perspective, the study contributes by revealing the nature of the Transformation process, its components, and its dimensions. From a practical perspective, the findings can serve as a basis for recommendations on designing optimized Employee Innovation Programs and, in this way, enhancing the innovativeness of business organizations. In our age now deprived of the traditional metaphysical certainties, to study the moral dimension of subjectivity in Hegel's The Phenomenology of Spirit is to make one's object of investigation that which is one of the themes of greatest philosophical interest, precisely owing to its great topicality. Hegel deals with the moral issue in a particularly profound manner, aware both of the contradictory and dramatic aspects of that experience and of the centrality of the motif of the «beyond». On the basis of this interpretative thesis, the analyses of Hegel's text made in this research are devoted to focussing on the experiences of the subject's constitution and legitimization together with the unexpected consequences deriving from the problematic relationship that the consciousness establishes with the self-sufficient immobility of substance. The result is a historiographical and theoretical study that slots effectively into the contemporary debate on the great topicality of Hegel's thought.
