This volume brings the remote and little known island of Rapa firmly to the forefront of Polynesian archaeology. Thirteen authors contribute 14 chapters, covering not only the basic archaeology of coastal sites, rock shelters, and fortifications, but faunal remains, agricultural development, and marine exploitation. The results, presented within a chronology framed by Bayesian analysis, are set against a background of ethnohistory and ethnology. Highly unusual in tropical Polynesian archaeology are descriptions of artefacts of perishable material. Taking the High Ground provides important insights into how a group of Polynesian settlers adapted to an isolated and in some ways restrictive environment.

Assumptions about good writing and teaching writing have undergone various changes during the last century. This chapter summarises relevant changes in Germany's approaches to teaching writing and then uncovers underlying values and beliefs about writing in current German policy documents by focusing on Hauptschule Year 9, where students can achieve the first general education qualification that entitles apprenticeship admission. In particular, we analyse national Educational Standards and a sample of federal Curricula by drawing on discourses of writing (DoW) and learning to write outlined by Ivanič (2004). Although there are clear variations among federal states, a common denominator is the dominance of the genre and skills discourses. At the same time, there is a lack of consistent references to discourses relating to process-oriented writing and creativity. The sociopolitical and social practices DoW are completely absent. We show that the focus on genre and skills can partly be explained by Germany's educational legacy but also by the growing emphasis on output orientation in educational policy documents, which is accompanied by writing assessments focused on aspects of literacy that are easier to evaluate (e.g., reading and orthography). We argue that policy documents need to be more closely connected to values and beliefs of what constitutes good writing by current writing scholars.

The increasing platformization of urban life needs critical perspectives to examine changing everyday practices and power shifts brought about by the expansion of digital platforms mediating care-services, housing, and mobility. This book addresses new modes of producing urban spaces and societies. It brings both platform researchers and activists from various fields related to critical urban studies and labour activism into dialogue. The contributors engage with the socio-spatial and normative implications of platform-mediated urban everyday life and urban futures, going beyond a rigid techno-dystopian stance in order to include an understanding of platforms as sites of social creativity and exchange.

Eco-memory looks back at the territory along space and time, in the story of how natural systems co-evolve with human settlements in a critical intersection, each time rethought, among man, nature and territories; in order to give visibility and prospects to the many fragile, invisible landscapes that fell off the development axis along the ungoverned industrialisation of the last century. On the one hand, it crosses historiography in a declination of temporal measurement (from the long to the short and very short term) that cannot be subsumed under today’s temporal acceleration, wiping out the past to the point of making territories we live in unrecognisable to our very eyes. On the other, it refers to an anthropology focusing on the spatial dimension and aimed at proposing a revolution of the gaze so as to reread eco-territorial dynamics no longer from the centre (cluttered by the rubble of a systemic crisis) but from the margins, to express new modes of neo-communitarian self-government.

Although events in La Harpe's life led him to become a friend of the Catholic revival during which Chateaubriand, to name only one, was pleased to have his support, he is rightly best remembered as a disciple of Voltaire who rose to eminence as a critic through his wholehearted acceptance of the latter's ideas. Everything in the man and in his work is deeply marked by the influence of the patriarch. He sought fame, not only as a critic, but as a playwright, poet, orator, translator and pamphleteer. This book, originally published in 1972 and later given the ISBN 978-0-900547-23-2, was made Open Access in 2024 as part of the MHRA Revivals programme.

In the present edition, an attempt is made to use a grammatical treatise known and sometimes misunderstood for more than 100 years, namely the Old Russian translation (hereinafter referred to as Pravila) of an anonymous medieval textbook of Latin syntax (Regulae congruitatum, constructiones et regimina, im hereinafter referred to as Regulae), in a particular form which is intended to facilitate both its consideration and evaluation as well as the interpretation of some not quite obvious points. On the one hand, the Latin template, its genesis, purpose, effect and dissemination will be examined and briefly described, on the other hand, the interlinear text form should not only allow the comparison with the Latin basic text, but also, above all, the restored interlinear text form in the foreground to let. detention

This book delves into the conceptual changes produced by the Spanish constitutional debate held between 27 August and 9 December 1931. Taking place at the beginning of Spain’s Second Republic, those parliamentary deliberations brought about significant novelties in the political vocabulary. Concepts such as democracy, sovereignty, reform, revolution, and freedom, among others, were re-signified. This study investigates the conceptual contributions made by Spanish MPs in the course of the constitutional debate of 1931 by assuming, as a research approach, an interdisciplinary stance combining conceptual history, political theory, and parliamentary constitutional history. By doing so, it selects five determining issues: the pervasive discussion about two competing meanings of a democratic state; the rhetorical uses of reform and revolution; conceptual controversies about religious freedom; the disputed idea of property rights; and the functions of parliament and the president of the republic in a semi-presidential regime. The constitutional debate was largely inspired by interwar European constitutionalism which constituent representatives used to update the Spanish constitutional tradition. With that goal in mind, this book is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students and scholars working in the fields of conceptual history, political philosophy, parliamentary history, European political history, and European constitutionalism.

"As the world has witnessed the worst financial crisis and climate crisis of our age, during the period of 2007-2009, the issues surrounding the emergence and development of financial markets and carbon markets is becoming an increasingly significant area of research and debate worldwide. By engaging with recently developed methods of research and new areas of practice, this book investigates the political, economic, policy and geographic determinants of the development of financial markets. The volume examines the causality between financial development and aggregate private investment from an economic perspective. It also explores the consequences of political liberalization, focusing on the impact of institutional improvement on financial development. It studies what stimulates governments to initiate reforms aimed at boosting financial development, and analyses the determinants of carbon markets in developing countries from a geographic point of view. This book is essential reading for all interested in economic and financial development, climate change, environmental economics, and applied econometrics. "

The city and the village represent two poles of Soviet society and ideology. The city symbolizes the future; the industrial proletariat is the natural ally of the Party. But the village provides a constant reminder of Russia's past, folklore and spirituality. It is this second theme which Valentin Rasputin, born in a Siberian village in 1937, takes up. Though not prolific he became a widely-read novelist, converting to Christianity in 1980 and ultimately moving to the political right after Glasnost. His novel Farewell to Matyora (1976) is considered a canonical example of 'village prose', an idealised picture of hard but pure farming life among the peasantry shortly to be displaced by the building of a hydroelectric dam. This book, originally published in paperback in 1986 under the ISBN 978-0-947623-08-1, was made Open Access in 2024 as part of the MHRA Revivals programme.

Epigenetics, which deals with the study of heritable gene expression that takes place independent of changes in DNA sequence, and optogenetics, which deals with the study of genes expressed under the influence of light, are two emerging areas of study and research that have contributed immensely to our current knowledge of mechanisms and disease processes in humans. These disciplines are interrelated in the broader picture of biology and one can be used to change or modify the other. The complexity of the techniques involved in these disciplines often leads to a lack of proper understanding by researchers from other disciplines and the scientific community at large. As such, this book provides simple and easy-to-follow explanations of some of the most exciting areas of research in these disciplines.
