After a short review of the history of research, the work introduces and delimits the concepts related to grammaticalization. It then provides extensive exemplification of grammaticalization phenomena in diverse languages, ordered by grammatical domains such as the verbal, pronominal and nominal sphere and clause level relations. The final chapter presents a theory of grammaticalization which is based on the autonomy of the linguistic sign with respect to the paradigmatic and syntagmatic axes. This is the basis of the structural parameters that constitute grammaticalization. They are operationalized to the point of rendering degrees of grammaticalization measurable.

For traditional subjects such as History, Art and Science, debate about the nature of knowledge in the school curriculum has produced a growing literature on the relationship between disciplinary knowledge and what is taught in schools. For newer subjects, however, the path is less clear. Knowledge and Knowing in Media and Film Studies is the first book to grapple with the question for these two related subjects. Steve Connolly argues that, while Media and Film Studies each have a clear epistemological base, consideration of craft skills alongside factual knowledge and criticality has led to the development of different criteria for what constitutes valuable knowledge than in traditional school subjects. The book problematises this difference through a genealogy of both subjects as they appear in the English school curriculum, charting their historical and disciplinary origins within that system. In so doing it finds that, far from being ‘new’ subjects, Media and Film Studies have parallel histories with more established subjects. Using a range of primary and secondary data, including interviews with media and film teachers, case studies and historical sources, the book provides an account of knowledge and knowing in school Media Studies and Film Studies, which both consolidates existing views and proposes some new perspectives. Praise for Knowledge and Knowing in Media and Film Studies ‘The status of Media and Film Education has been contested for a very long time. In this book, Steve Connolly drills down beneath the surface level of debates about academic rigour and what education is for. He analyses how knowledge works in these subjects, how it differs from other educational processes, why this is important and how this matters for more recent endeavours in “media literacy”. No future conversation about the value of these subjects in education should begin without attention to this rich contribution.’ Julian McDougall, Bournemouth University

This open access book examines Malaysian politics using a linguistic perspective. It explores how language serves to (de)legitimise governance, and its subsequent policies and activities in Malaysia. Grounded in discourse studies, this edited volume presents research on the discourses produced by and on Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional from 2008 to 2020, studying how political actors (de)legitimise their governance through discursive means. The thirteen original chapters select spoken, print and digital texts in English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil, and deploy varied theoretical and methodological approaches. Their linguistic analysis unearths the language features and strategies that facilitate (de)legitimation. It shows how political actors shape the discursive representation and evaluation of multiple concerns in Malaysia. Consequently, Discursive Approaches to Politics in Malaysia: Legitimising Governance improves our understanding of contemporary Malaysian political discourse. It is of interest to graduates and researchers in the field of discourse studies, seeking to understand the discursive contours of politics in this developing Asian country. ; This open access book examines Malaysian politics using a linguistic perspective. This unusual paper offers a commentary upon a very short, but very important, paper by Riccardo. It is one of his last. My paper is unusual because it sets out the entire text of Riccardo’s paper and offers an ongoing commentary upon that text. My commentary is “spiced into” Riccardo’s text. The subject matter of his text is of fundamental importance for the law of work. This is because Riccardo offers an account or the origins of work and of the relationship between law and work. Once this connection is established it becomes clear that it has radical consequences for the dominant account of the law of work – including both its scope and its purpose. This paper salutes Riccardo’s paper as a masterpiece of philosophising about the law of work. A miniature. But a masterpiece.

Located about 4 km northeast of the Ionian coast, the small fortified Messapian settlement at Li Schiavoni (Puglia, Southern Italy) occupy an extensive plateau, controlling the territory. The stratigraphic research has revealed part of a house, remains of burials and some sections of the fortification wall. The walls, built during the Archaic period, was restored and reinforced during the Hellenistic Age, perhaps because of an imminent threat. Thanks to the special focus on the new archaeological data from the Li Schiavoni settlement, we can highlight some aspects related to the settlement system on the Ionian coast of the Salento (Puglia, Southern Italy).

Computer-Aided Modelling of Stormwater Systems deals with the construction of probabilistic models of rainfall and their use in the sizing of retention tanks. The book discusses methods of sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of hydrodynamic models of urban catchments, as well as proprietary calculation algorithms for the sizing of retention tanks, considering the uncertainty of calibrated parameters and the variability of outflow hydrographs from the catchment and shape parameters. This is important from the point of view of contemporary hydrology of urban catchments because it is the reliability of the identified parameters and their appropriate selection that determines the developed hydrodynamic model of the catchment, so that it finds a practical application in sewage network management. Also included are innovative graphical and analytical methods of tanks sizing, whereby the shapes of hydrographs of the outflow from the catchment area are considered, which is omitted in most of the methods used. Hybrid models which are a combination of graphical and analytical methods with probabilistic models of rainfall are also presented, which makes it possible to shorten the calculation time. Finally, the ability to implement computational algorithms in the field of sensitivity and uncertainty analysis can also be used when analysing catchments with implemented green infrastructure facilities. Computer-Aided Modelling of Stormwater Systems is aimed at doctoral students, research workers and engineers as an introduction to modern methods of modelling stormwater and combined sewer networks together with the objects located on it, such as retention tanks. Mediating Gender in Post-Authoritarian South Korea focuses on the relationship between media representation and gender politics in South Korea. Its chapters feature notable voices of South Korea’s burgeoning sphere of gender critique enabled by social media, doing what no other academic volume has yet accomplished in the sphere of Anglophone studies on this topic. Seeking to interrogate the role of popular media in establishing and shaping gendered common sense, this volume fosters cross-disciplinary conversations linked by the central thesis that gender discourse and representation are central to the politics, aesthetics, and economics of contemporary South Korea. In the post-authoritarian period (the late 1980s to the #MeToo present), media representation and popular discourse changed the gender conventions that are found at the core of civic, political, and cultural debates. Mediating Gender in Post-Authoritarian South Korea maps the ways in which popular media and public discourse make the social dynamics of gender visible and open them up for debate and dismantling. In presenting innovative new research on the ways in which popular ideas about gender gain concrete form and political substance through mass mediation, the book’s contributors investigate the discursive production of gender in contemporary South Korea through trends, tropes, and thematics, as popular media become the domain in which new gendered subjectivities and relations transpire. The essays in this volume present cases and media objects that span multiple media and platforms, introducing new ways of thinking about gender as a platform and a conceptual infrastructure in the post-authoritarian era.

In Gone to Pitchipoi Katz vividly recalls his experience growing up in the turmoil of WWII, and his extraordinary escape from the constant threats of Nazi occupied Poland. Born in 1931 in the picturesque countryside of Ostrowiec Świętokrzyskie, wherein more than a third of the population was Jewish, Katz experienced a constant juxtaposition of traditional ways of life with the tragedies of those years. Deemed unfit for labor camps, Katz was marked for certain death and forced to live on the run in a daily quest for food, shelter, and friendship. He eventually reunited with his sister, Fela, together encountering a series of narrow escapes and forging on to see the day of liberation. This book is a major contribution to our understanding of the fate of Jews in small Polish towns during the Second World War.

Networks of Power reconstructs the course of political history in the poorly documented Naco Valley from the fourteenth through early sixteenth centuries. Describing the material and behavioral patterns pertaining to the Late Postclassic period using components of three settlements in the Naco Valley of northwestern Honduras, the book focuses on how contests for power shaped political structures. Power-seeking individuals, including but not restricted to ruling elites, depended on networks of allies to support their political objectives. Ongoing and partially successful competitions waged within networks led to the incorporation of exotic ideas and imported items into the daily practices of all Naco Valley occupants. The result was a fragile hierarchical structure forever vulnerable to the initiatives of agents operating on local and distant stages.

The essay is devoted to reconstructing the events of the Istituto di Studi superiori, especially from an institutional and political point of view. It highlights its specificity on an administrative and financial level compared to the characteristics of the national university system. Although the Florentine leadership did not achieve full autonomy for the Institute, the situation brought about by the law of 1872 made it possible to achieve significant results on a scientific and cultural level. However, the growing need to adapt to the university system and the financial difficulties led to a crisis by the end of the 19th century.
