Following the targeted word direction of Opto- and Nanoelectronics, the field of science and technology related to the development of new display technology and organic materials based on liquid crystals ones is meeting the task of replacing volume inorganic electro-optical matrices and devices. An important way in this direction is the study of promising photorefractive materials, conducting coatings, alignment layers, as well as electric schemes that allow the control of liquid crystal mesophase with good advantage. This book includes advanced and revised contributions and covers theoretical modeling for optoelectronics and nonlinear optics, as well as includes experimental methods, new schemes, new approach and explanation which extends the display technology for laser, semiconductor device technology, medicine, biotechnology, etc. The advanced idea, approach, and information described here will be fruitful for the readers to find a sustainable solution in a fundamental study and in the industry.

This open access book shares a two-part conceptual framework for critical global learning which weaves together theory and practice. The author shares the outcomes of her research and experiences developing students’ critical thinking skills within the context of global citizenship education. While rooted in literature and research findings, the book is personal and reflexive, as the author shares her experiences as a teacher trying, and sometimes failing, to support critical thinking development which allows readers to reflect on their own practice. The book will be of interest to academics working in higher education, initial teacher education, and global citizenship education.

This monograph presents the mechanistic foundations of the theory of Morphodynamics, a discipline that investigates the shape of the erodible boundary of natural water bodies. We focus on the fluvial Morphodynamics of straight erodible channels, providing the basis for subsequent extensions to meandering rivers (treated in the companion monograph 2 of this series) and braided rivers. We present basic notions on the Mechanics of Turbulent Flows and Sediment Transport in straight open channels with mobile beds. We then investigate their morphodynamic equilibrium and its instability, that leads to the formation of a variety of bedforms observed in natural rivers. In particular, fluvial bars will deserve special attention as the fundamental building block of large scale fluvial patterns.

"Anglo-Saxon ‘things’ could talk. Nonhuman voices leap out from the Exeter Book Riddles, telling us how they were made or how they behave. The Franks Casket is a box of bone that alludes to its former fate as a whale that swam aground onto the shingle, and the Ruthwell monument is a stone column that speaks as if it were living wood, or a wounded body. In this book, James Paz uncovers the voice and agency that these nonhuman things have across Anglo-Saxon literature and material culture. He makes a new contribution to ‘thing theory’ and rethinks conventional divisions between animate human subjects and inanimate nonhuman objects in the early Middle Ages. Anglo-Saxon writers and craftsmen describe artefacts and animals through riddling forms or enigmatic language, balancing an attempt to speak and listen to things with an understanding that these nonhumans often elude, defy and withdraw from us. But the active role that things have in the early medieval world is also linked to the Germanic origins of the word, where a þing is a kind of assembly, with the ability to draw together other elements, creating assemblages in which human and nonhuman forces combine. Nonhuman voices in Anglo-Saxon literature and material culture invites us to rethink the concept of voice as a quality that is not simply imposed upon nonhumans but which inheres in their ways of existing and being in the world. It asks us to rethink the concept of agency as arising from within groupings of diverse elements, rather than always emerging from human actors alone."

From postwar debates on institutionalised cooperation in Western Europe to the ambitions of the European Union in the post-Cold War era, this volume investigates the impact of socialist networks on European construction and integration, and the role of European socialism in international (dis)orders. It assesses how socialist networks were influenced by relations with socialist parties and groups outside Europe, and how they navigated local, national and global politics. Collectively, the chapters explore four main areas: the relationship between the ideals of European cooperation and daily, routine and domestic politics; the shifting definitions of political elites and popular understandings of Europe, including the influence of people of African, Caribbean and Asian descent on the transformation of socialist thought, policies and practices in the European (ex-) imperial powers; the extent to which European socialists attempted to propose a postcolonial, postimperial agenda for Europe; and how European institutions were used, and with what results, by socialists and their contacts. Reflecting on the successes and failures of transnational processes of socialisation, the role of cultural intermediaries and bridge-builders, and the reasons behind misunderstandings, failed projects and missed opportunities for peace and equality, the book examines how socialist politicians and activists conceived of Europe’s role in worldmaking in the transition out of conflict and empire. In doing so, the volume contributes to a better understanding of, and support for, cooperation across borders.

There is a widespread belief that philology is a scholarly discipline, useful for the past and only marginally for the present. This volume argues the opposite thesis, namely, that philology is a natural discipline for all men who want to account for themselves and reality, who want, therefore, to practice the intelligence of things. Centuries of tradition have placed the discipline in the reanimation wards of history, that is, in the places where the past is dissected, classified, rearranged, only sometimes understood, but nevertheless placed in a reassuring catalog. The spaces, on the other hand, of the questions and challenges of the present would be forbidden or inaccessible to her. In this framework of standardized immobilism, the social utility of philology, not only as a place for the apprenticeship of the critical spirit, but also as a tool for answering questions of meaning, origin, and freedom, is felt as heresy or as a useless and misguided petition of principle. This book ventures into the present; searching for and finding in medieval love poetry one of the roots of the European conception of freedom, all the more relevant today, the more we realize the importance of an anthropology of the person rather than of the individual gender; demonstrating what philology is capable of doing by scrutinizing the 'evil papers,' that is, the documentation of heinous crimes of great social and political relevance (the Moro case, the Mafia, etc. ); addressing, and not avoiding, the dramatic theme of truth, with its corollary of the relationship between those who investigate and defend it, on the one hand, and power on the other.

The monograph is part of a stream of considerations on current processes and phenomena related to the implementation of sustainable development in organisations. In this book, the authors emphasise that in the context of sustainable development of organisations, numerous views are being confronted and new theories are emerging. Therefore, the book should not be treated as an exhaustive analysis of the discussed aspects, but as a contribution to the discussion on the issue of changes in modern organisations in the face of sustainable development challenges. Its basic aim is to identify organisational solutions in the field of human resources management aimed at supporting sustainable development of organisations. On the basis of the selected aspects analysed, it is presented what changes can be made by a contemporary organisation wishing to enter the path of sustainable development. An important part of the analysis is devoted to the issue of sustainable human resources management. The authors point out that the transformation of an organisation towards sustainable development is impossible without the involvement of its employees in the process. Therefore, people managing organisations should direct their attention to creating green competences of their employees.

In this publication, the characteristic bell-shaped pits are investigated from initial use as storage facilities for grain to the final backfilling process. The study demonstrates that the “central site” of Stillfried also served as a large grain storage place in the Late Bronze Age (Urnfield culture). The observed backfill patterns in the abandoned pits suggest profane or religiously motivated rules imposed by a legislative authority.

The book is dedicated to the sculptor John Gibson (1790-1866) and his relationship with Antonio Canova (1757-1822). It analyses Gibson’s early years in Rome, his role in anlgo-roman artistic exchange and his self-fashioning strategy as „Britain’s Phidias“. Through the examination of extensive source material the study gives insights into Gibson’s life and work and opens new perspectives on the broader field of 19th century sculpture.
