In 1965 the UK enacted the Race Relations Act while the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) opened for signature and ratification. In the US, the changes that brought down the walls of segregation, conveying some equality to black people essentially began with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. These ground-breaking instruments marked a commitment—domestically and internationally by the state parties to the ICERD—to address racial injustice and inequality through legal means. Yet, the intervening years reveal the challenges of pursuing racial justice and equality through the medium of law. In recent years, allegations of institutional racism have been levelled against numerous public institutions in the UK, while the rise of populism globally has challenged the ability of law to effect change. This edited collection draws attention to the need to reflect on the persistence of racial inequalities and injustices despite law’s intervention and arguably because of its ‘unconscious’ role in their promotion. It does so from a multiplicity of perspectives ranging from the doctrinal, socio-legal, critical and theoretical, thereby generating different kinds of knowledge about race and law. By exploring contemporary issues in racial justice and equality, contributors examine the role of law—whether domestic or international, hard or soft—in advancing racial equality and justice and consider whether it can effect substantive change.

O livro prossegue a tetralogia anterior: 1. O homem e o mistério do mal; 3.

The base of proposed reflections made from the perspective of cultural linguistics are private letters by Stanisław Chlebowski — Polish painter who worked at the sultan’s court in Stambul. The aim of the article is a reconstruction of the picture of Orient in lexis and phraseology of the letters. The analysis is conducted from two subiective points of view: the painter’s point of view and point of view of the citizen of the Turkish state. It turns out that Orient and Oriental people are constantly valued by Chlebowski. He uses colloquial Polish, choosing emotional lexemes and morphems. His opinion on Orient is ambivalent, but it is almost convergence with the findings of the researchers of stereotypes about nationality.

Linguistics Olympiad: Training Guide represents a unique and complex work aimed to help students and teachers alike prepare for the national and international Linguistics Olympiads. This guide identifies the most common types of problems and, for each of them, proposes a theoretical framework (basic linguistics concepts, as well as language typology data) together with a methodological approach, tailored for each type of problems, and, in the end, a selection of practice problems from past editions of national and international Linguistics Olympiads. This work is breaking new ground, being the first of its kind, featuring a large number of languages and problems, centered around the concept of problem-based learning.

The time around 1910 has entered art history as the moment when «abstraction was invented». However, where and when works of non-figurative art became present in the public eye has been afforded little attention to date. Exhibiting Abstraction is the first publication to be devoted entirely to the presentation of abstract art between 1908 and 1915 and as such uncovers strategies for the dissemination of early abstract painting in exhibitions.

Anna Ratke-Majewska explores how the Law and Justice Party’s rule (2005–2010, 2015–2025) shaped a specific vision of Polish national identity through the politics of memory. Focusing on the Warsaw Uprising, the Cursed Soldiers, and Polish–Jewish relations during World War II, she reveals how state-endorsed narratives elevated selected interpretations of the past while marginalizing others. The rising conflicts of memories reflected and intensified political and social divisions, turning history into a contested space of identity, legitimacy, and ideological struggle in contemporary Poland. These struggles influenced public debate, education, and the international image of the Polish state.

The Mishna Berura is, without a doubt, Rabbi Israel Meir Kagan's greatest and most complex contribution to the canon of Orthodox Jewish Law; it is a singular work that synthesizes Jewish traditions, laws, and mores into a practical halakhic guide to daily religious life. For all of his traditionalism, Rabbi Kagan was an iconoclast, and the Mishna Berura broke from many of the traditional approaches of deciding halakhic directives. Instead, he favored studying, engaging, and asserting decisions in a nuanced, almost natural approach to how ethical people should live their daily lives consistent with Jewish law. Today, the Mishna Berura has gained widespread recognition and is considered authoritative by essentially all of contemporary Orthodox Jewry, a measure of greatness that few works of Halakha have attained. Michael J. Broyde and Ira Bedzow here investigate this seminal text and explore its background and decision-making process.

Building, or re-building, states after war or crisis is a contentious process. But why? Sabaratnam argues that to best answer the question, we need to engage with the people who are supposedly benefiting from international ‘expertise’. This open access book challenges and enhances standard ‘critical’ narratives of statebuilding by exploring the historical experiences and interpretive frameworks of the people targeted by intervention. Drawing on face-to-face interviews, archival research, policy reviews and in-country participant-observations carried out over several years, the author challenges assumptions underpinning external interventions, such as the incapacity of ‘local’ agents to govern and the necessity of ‘liberal’ values in demanding better governance. The analysis focuses on Mozambique, long hailed as one of international donors’ great success stories, but whose peaceful, prosperous, democratic future now hangs in the balance. The conclusions underscore the significance of thinking with rather than for the targets of state-building assistance, and appreciating the historical and material conditions which underpin these reform efforts.
