Before the UN Sustainable Development Goals: A Historical Companion enables professionals, scholars, and students engaged with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to develop a richer understanding of the legacies and historical complexities of the policy fields behind each goal. Each of the 17 chapters tells the decades or centuries-old backstory of one SDG, including an examination of how the SDG problem impacted past societies and the various attempts at understanding and addressing it. Collectively, the chapters reveal the multiple and often interwoven histories that have shaped the challenges later encompassed in the SDGs. The book’s chapters, written in an accessible style, are authored by international experts from multiple disciplines. The book is an indispensable resource and a vital foundation for understanding the past’s indelible footprint on our contemporary sustainable development challenges.

This book investigates the substantial and growing contribution which African Independent and Pentecostal Churches are making to sustainable development in all its manifold forms. Moreover, this volume seeks to elucidate how these churches reshape the very notion of sustainable development and contribute to the decolonisation of development. Fostering both overarching and comparative perspectives, the book includes chapters on West Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, and Burkina Faso) and Southern Africa (Zimbabwe and South Africa). It aims to open up a subfield focused on African Initiated Christianity within the religion and development discourse, substantially broadening the scope of the existing literature. Written predominantly by scholars from the African continent, the chapters in this volume illuminate potentials and perspectives of African Initiated Christianity, combining theoretical contributions, essays by renowned church leaders, and case studies focusing on particular churches or regional contexts. While the contributions in this book focus on the African continent, the notion of development underlying the concept of the volume is deliberately wide and multidimensional, covering economic, social, ecological, political, and cultural dimensions. Therefore, the book will be useful for the community of scholars interested in religion and development as well as researchers within African studies, anthropology, development studies, political science, religious studies, sociology of religion, and theology. It will also be a key resource for development policymakers and practitioners.

The XI Encontro EDICIC Ibérico, entitled "Training and Research in Information Science: Opportunities and Challenges," held between November 10th and 12th, 2025 at the Higher Institute of Accounting and Administration of Porto (ISCAP), Polytechnic of Porto, was part of the consolidated tradition of scientific meetings promoted by EDICIC and dedicated to promoting development, critical reflection, and interdisciplinary dialogue in the field of Information Science, both in the Iberian context and in the Ibero-American space. Organized under the auspices of the Association for Education and Research in Information Science of Ibero-America and the Caribbean (EDICIC), the meeting constituted an academic forum of excellence, bringing together professors, researchers, students, and professionals from Portugal, Spain, and various Latin American countries. The scientific program promoted the exchange of knowledge, the dissemination of research results, and the critical discussion of emerging themes that shape the field of Information Science. The thematic axes — Ethics and Deontology, Information and Knowledge Management, Impact of Information and Communication Technologies, Epistemological Perspectives and Trends in Training and Education in Information Science — reflected the diversity and complexity of contemporary challenges in the field, highlighting the plurality of approaches present in the scientific community. The organization of the meeting took place within the scope of the Bachelor's Degree in Documentation and Information Sciences and Technologies (CTDI), offered at ISCAP, reinforcing the commitment of this study cycle to the articulation between teaching, research and professional practice, as well as to the promotion of scientific initiatives that contribute to the consolidation of the academic community in the area. The XI Encontro EDICIC Ibérico reaffirmed the value of interinstitutional collaboration between Iberian countries, enriched by contributions from Latin America, which broadened the debate and fostered critical reflection on educational, professional and investigative practices. Oral presentations, plenary sessions, and roundtables provided opportunities for in-depth scientific exploration that contributed to the conceptual and methodological renewal of the discipline. This volume of proceedings brings together the contributions resulting from this edition, preserving the scientific memory of the meeting and reinforcing the role of EDICIC as a space of reference and cooperation in the Iberian and Ibero-American landscape of Information Science.

The here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing.

This book examines how Norwegian education policy may create crises rather than solve them. Schools are overloaded with tasks that cannot be resolved politically. The school is expected to provide students with shared frames of reference, promote sustainability and democracy, and contribute to social levelling, inclusion, and successful integration. It is supposed to counteract historical decline and help us realise utopian visions of the future. When such extensive and numerous goals are set for the school, it becomes difficult for teachers, students, and principals to succeed. This often leads the school into a continuous state of crisis. It becomes the cause of both minor and major societal crises at the same time as it is expected to function as a panacea. In this book, we explore the function, ontology, and epistemology of crisis within educational policy rhetoric, and we analyse how education policy constructs crises or attempts to manage them in different historical phases. The topics discussed are highly relevant to today’s school debates. The book is intended for teachers, teacher educators, school leaders, education policymakers, education researchers, journalists, labour unions, and others with an interest in education. The book is initiated by the research group Compete at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences and edited by Tom Are Trippestad, Merethe Roos, and Erlend Eidsvik, and features contributions from several prominent education researchers at various Norwegian educational institutions.

In recent years, all over the world, the attention paid to local and traditional productions is growing, especially in the agro-food sector. Maybe, it is not only due to the impact of globalization and the social and economic changes but also due to the increased consideration to health and nutritional aspects of food. Hence, for economic, social, historical, and nutritional reasons, this trend has led to the rediscovery and reuse of landraces of many different crops, responding to requests for more and more demanding market. This volume collects examples of local crops and old landraces of different areas of the planet that testify the extreme importance of the relation existing among a land, the local productions, the historical traditions, the conservation of biodiversity, the health benefits, the environmental impact and the local economies, also including the significance to dedicate resources to scientific researches in local crops.

For disadvantaged young people, (social) pedagogical help in the transition from school to (vocational) training is of great importance in shaping these transitions. A longitudinal study will focus on the young people participating in transition assistance and question how (social) educational assistance can become biographically relevant for them. The transitions constitute a process between biographical processes of appropriation and education and institutional regulation.

This book sets out to historicise our understanding of contemporary trends by studying the long relationship between science, food and drink marketing and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. It aims to bring together contemporary and historical research from a multimodal perspective, considering how scientific discourse and ideas about health and nutrition are channelled through visual and material culture. Using examples of advertisements, commercials and posters, the 16 chapters in this book will foster a cross-disciplinary and cross-temporal dialogue, uncovering links between past and present ways that manufacturers have capitalised upon scientific innovations to create new products or rebrand existing products and employed science to make claims about health and nutrition. They will, thus, demonstrate the continuity of science in food and drink marketing—even if fundamental ideas of nutrition have evolved over time. The book provides crucial new insights into the significance of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a period of innovation in food and drink marketing and showcasing how many of the marketing strategies employed today, in fact, have a far broader historical trajectory. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of Critical Food Studies, Media and Communication Studies, History of Science and Medicine and Cultural Studies, as well as nutritionists, dieticians, sportspeople, in addition to policymakers and practitioners working in the area of food and drink marketing.
