Who were the inhabitants of the castle, the main center of power during the Middle-Ages? What um their life style? These are some of the many questions to which this Collective study hopes to reply. Confronted by archaeological and written evidence, unusually treated here as sciences auxiliary to archaeology we are offered here an unusual lieu of a sparsly inhabited castle. This study is centred on the region of the Rhône-Alpes with several incursions for comparison in Alsace, Spain and in Poland, their objective goes far outside the regional limits and should provoke the interest of all archaeologists and medieval historians.

This reprint is about the latest research on Process Systems Engineering (PSE) at the 2024 PSE Asia International Symposium held in Penang, Malaysia, on 5–8 August 2024. The PSE Asia series is a biennial international symposium in Asia, bringing together researchers and practitioners to discuss recent developments in Process Systems Engineering. Process Systems Engineering (PSE) plays a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of industrial systems by employing advanced methodologies to optimize processes. PSE allows for the meticulous design, modelling, and control of complex industrial systems, ensuring that every component operates at peak efficiency. With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), these capabilities have been significantly augmented. AI-driven modelling and analysis tools enable more accurate predictions, better decision-making, and seamless integration of various subsystems, leading to improved overall performance. By leveraging AI, PSE can now tackle increasingly complex challenges, making it possible to manage and optimize large-scale industrial operations with unprecedented precision and efficiency.

In the wake of Glasgow's transformation in the nineteenth-century into an industrial powerhouse–the “Second City of the Empire”–a substantial part of the old town of Adam Smith degenerated into an overcrowded and disease-ridden slum. The Old Closes and Streets of Glasgow, Thomas Annan's photographic record of this central section of the city prior to its demolition in accordance with the City of Glasgow Improvements Act of 1866, is widely recognized as a classic of nineteenth-century documentary photography. Annan's achievement as a photographer of paintings, portraits and landscapes is less widely known. Thomas Annan of Glasgow: Pioneer of the Documentary Photograph offers a handy, comprehensive and copiously illustrated overview of the full range of the photographer's work. The book opens with a brief account of the immediate context of Annan's career as a photographer: the astonishing florescence of photography in Victorian Scotland. Successive chapters deal with each of the main fields of his activity, touching along the way on issues such as the nineteenth-century debate over the status of photography–a mechanical practice or an artistic one?–and the still ongoing controversies surrounding the documentary photograph in particular. While the text itself is intended for the general reader, extensive endnotes amplify particular themes and offer guidance to readers interested in pursuing them further.

An unexpected immigration wave of Jews from the former Soviet Union mostly in the 1990s has stabilized and enlarged Jewish life in Germany. Jewish kindergartens and schools were opened, and Jewish museums, theaters, and festivals are attracting a wide audience. No doubt: Jews will continue to live in Germany. At the same time, Jewish life has undergone an impressing transformation in the second half of the 20th century– from rejection to acceptance, but not without disillusionments and heated debates. And while the ´new Jews of Germany,` 90 percent of them of Eastern European background, are already considered an important factor of the contemporary Jewish diaspora, they still grapple with the shadow of the Holocaust, with internal cultural clashes and with difficulties in shaping a new collective identity. What does it mean to live a Jewish life in present-day Germany? How are Jewish thoughts, feelings, and practices reflected in contemporary arts, literature, and movies? What wi

Does the fact that the majority of Turkey's population is Muslim form a hindrance to its EU membership? According to a recent policy advice by the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), the answer is an adamant 'no'. Why is this issue of Turkish Islam relevant? After all, Turkey should not be judged by standards other than the Copenhagen criteria. The answer is that the public debate outside 'Brussels' will not be limited to these official criteria. Many people in Europe are worried about Turkey's 'Islam factor'. They believe that Muslims are (potentially violent) fundamentalists who want to establish a theocracy. By explicitly examining the role of Turkish Islam and Muslims in Turkey, the WRR wants to contribute to a well-informed European public debate on Turkey's accession.
