The domination of Filippo Maria Visconti in Lombardy (1412-1447) was the result of an attempt, only partially successful, to recompose the vast territories already dominated by the first duke, Giangaleazzo Visconti. For thirty-five years, the third duke of Milan governed a large, rich and prosperous state, strengthened its institutions, cultivated high monarchical ambitions and proclaimed ideas of peace, concord and justice. The use of force and diplomacy and the close confrontation with the political, social and economic actors of the domain were the tools adopted to strengthen and consolidate the ducal domination. The authors of this volume illustrate the political models underlying the exercise of the duke's authority, the ways of establishing relationships between authorities and subjects, the construction of the symbolic and ideological apparatus, the artistic commission of the prince, ecclesiastical politics and the religious events of the duchy against the background of the councils of Constance and Basel. Some specific moments of ducal politics are also analyzed: the deeds of dedication of 1412, the geopolitical set established in 1435 after the victory of Ponza, the crisis of the last years of the duchy characterized by the ruthless execution of the government practices. Ultimately, the book aims to offer a more in-depth and problematic view of the domination of the third duke of Milan, which in its chiaroscuro turns out to be an important moment in the stabilization of the structures of the Lombard regional state.

"A film that will let you see the music and listen to drawings; in a word, a film full of Fantasia!" Bruno Bozzetto's Allegro non Troppo tips its hand right away: it is an unabashed, yet full of admiration, retake on Walt Disney's 1940 "concert feature". The obvious nod to that model fuels many tongue-in-cheek jokes in the film; however, Allegro non Troppo soon departs from mere parody, and becomes a showcase for the multifaceted aesthetics of Italian animation in 1976, as well as a witty social satire and a powerful rethinking of the music-image relationship in cinema. Marco Bellano's open access book reconstructs the history of the production of Allegro non Troppo, on the basis of an original research developed with the contribution of Bozzetto himself; it also presents an audiovisual analysis of the work, as to reassess the international relevance of Bozzetto's achievements by giving insight into the director's creative process. The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com.

Meritocracy today involves the idea that whatever your social position at birth, society ought to offer enough opportunity and mobility for ‘talent’ to combine with ‘effort’ in order to ‘rise to the top’. This idea is one of the most prevalent social and cultural tropes of our time, as palpable in the speeches of politicians as in popular culture. In this book Jo Littler argues that meritocracy is the key cultural means of legitimation for contemporary neoliberal culture – and that whilst it promises opportunity, it in fact creates new forms of social division. Against Meritocracy is split into two parts. Part I explores the genealogies of meritocracy within social theory, political discourse and working cultures. It traces the dramatic U-turn in meritocracy’s meaning, from socialist slur to a contemporary ideal of how a society should be organised. Part II uses a series of case studies to analyse the cultural pull of popular ‘parables of progress’, from reality TV to the super-rich and celebrity CEOs, from social media controversies to the rise of the ‘mumpreneur’. Paying special attention to the role of gender, ‘race’ and class, this book provides new conceptualisations of the meaning of meritocracy in contemporary culture and society.

This work is the result of rescue archaeology carried out at Feurs (Loire) from 1978 to 1981. A series of excavations on the site of the Roman town revealed an earlier Gaulish settlement at its height during the late La Tène period. The discovery of evidence of pre-Roman occupation was completely unexpected since the cantonal capital of the Segusiavi, Forum Segusiavorum, was founded by Augustus and its origins were assumed to date from this period. Based upon the systematic analysis of a large number of finds series, the author’s study outlines how the different aspects of the Gaulish settlement of the site developed during the century preceding Caesar’s conquest. Seen within the context of inner Gaul, Feurs is of fundamental importance to our understanding of Gaulish civilisation at the end of the Iron Age.

Celiac disease (CD) occurs in about 1% of people worldwide. Diagnosis rates are increasing due to a true rise in incidence, rather than increased awareness and detection. CD affects genetically susceptible individuals who are triggered by the ingestion of gluten. The disease has many clinical manifestations, ranging from severe to minimally symptomatic or non-symptomatic presentations. Diagnosis requires the presence of duodenal chronic inflammation, and most patients have circulating antibodies against tissue transglutaminase. Our understanding of the basic and clinical aspects of CD increases, which is as a major health problem of almost global occurrence. Case finding, distinguishing CD from other gluten-sensitive conditions, better care, and balanced use of resources are the current challenges.

The book discusses the sociolinguistic status and prestige of the Polish language and the changes in the national identity of Catholics in Belarus due to the switch from Polish to Belarusian in the Catholic Church. The research shows that the national identification of Catholics in Belarus is changing. The oldest generations most often self-identify as Polish. For those from the middle and youngest generations, the link between nationality and their religion is not obvious as being a Catholic does not exclude a Belarusian self-identity. Belonging to the Catholic Church results from being baptized in the Catholic rite, while national identity can be defined in many ways and re-defined by various life experiences. Catholicism has proven to be a less debated and more durable category than nationality.

This chapter considers the use of automated and AI-enabled technologies in forensic mental health contexts, focusing on the use of predictive analytics in risk assessment. Risk assessment in forensic mental health care has been the subject of longstanding experimentation in quantitative techniques of prediction. Evolving algorithmic technologies and the increasing complexity of global networks of information and communication technology create additional possibilities, particularly with the advent of remote biometric monitoring and surveillance technologies. This chapter examines the legal implications of these developments by engaging with two threads of Bernadette McSherry’s work: (1) the use of actuarial risk assessments to predict and manage people deemed dangerous or ‘risky’ to themselves or others; and (2) the human rights implications of predictive practices that result in compulsory treatment, supervision or preventive detention of people with mental health conditions and disabilities. It seeks to extend McSherry’s work by considering potential benefits and shortcomings of a human rights-informed approach to governing emerging algorithmic risk assessment technologies in forensic mental health contexts, and identifying avenues for further research to inform critique and reform in this rapidly evolving field.

The history of political freedom in Europe has long been articulated within a genealogical scheme that interprets the nature of contemporary freedom starting from its remote origins. This explains the adoption of a teleological approach: from the freedom of the ancients to that of the moderns; from positive to negative freedom; from libertas ecclesiae to religious tolerance. Awareness of the crisis of the great narrative of freedom invites us to broaden the field of analysis, rejecting a linear history of the notion and its expressions, less and less capable of accounting for the discontinuities and tensions between different meanings and models. The volume reintegrates the theme of freedom within the framework of the practices of political actors in the late Middle Ages, taking into consideration the multiple declinations of the ideas of freedom in Europe with a specific attention to the Italian realities.

In collaboration with the MDPI publishing house, we are pleased to introduce the reader to our new project, a Special Issue entitled “Advanced Eco-friendly Wood-Based Composites”. This Special Issue provides an opportunity to investigate advanced eco-friendly wood-based composites from a broader perspective. The coronavirus pandemic and shutdown measures employed to contain it, as well as the ongoing war in Ukraine, have influenced and decelerated the world economy and adversely impacted research activities on most levels in all countries. Surprisingly, researchers in the field of wood-based composites have continued to make progress, which is also described in this Special Issue.
