This book provides a novel analysis for the syntax of the clausal left periphery, focusing on various finite clause types and especially on embedded clauses. It investigates how the appearance of multiple projections interacts with economy principles and with the need for marking syntactic information overtly. In particular, the proposed account shows that a flexible approach assuming only a minimal number of projections is altogether favourable to cartographic approaches. The main focus of the book is on West Germanic, in particular on English and German, yet other Germanic and non-Germanic languages are also discussed for comparative purposes.

This book envisions Łódź, a city in present-day central Poland, the region’s textile industrial hub, to have been the capital of the Polish 19th century. Its history is a tale of struggle with modern change in Eastern Europe. The authors boldly challenge the romantic and noble-based Polish cultural imaginary, offering instead a revolutionary path to understanding confrontation with modernity in the region. The book examines local press debates during four pivotal periods, each of which stimulated self-reflection on the idea of the modern city: – Rapid industrial growth in the tsarist borderlands; – State crafting after WWI; – Socialist restructuring after 1945; – Transition and deindustrialization after 1989. Together these insights constitute a multi-faced portrait of 20th century urban experience beyond the metropolis, in different historical contexts. This innovative, interdisciplinary work deftly integrates urban and cultural history, historical sociology and discourse research. It will be of great value to Polish and Jewish studies’ specialists, as well as those in the field of Eastern European and Slavic studies. The book also addresses core intellectual debates within urban studies, modernity studies and historical discourse analysis worldwide.

Examines ideas of violence in German culture after 9/11 through the lens of "violence elsewhere" - exploring works and discourses about violence in distant locations or times. Following the Nazi era, the Holocaust, and the Second World War, in postwar Germany thinking or speaking about that extreme violence seemed distinctively difficult - even perhaps, at times, impossible. Yet we can learn about understandings of violence in this period in novel ways by exploring images and constructions in German culture of faraway violence, as shown in the recent volume Violence Elsewhere 1: Imagining Distant Violence in Germany, 1945-2001. As of September 11, 2001, violence came to appear transnationally, spectacularly mobile in new ways. Consequently, Violence Elsewhere 2 explores ideas about "violence elsewhere" in German-language culture since 2001. Here, "elsewhere" can mean not only distant places; it may also be violence perceived as foreign, or in the past. Simultaneously, this work suggests that the idea of 9/11 as a watershed in thinking about violence is more complex than meets the eye. Here, nine essays consider classic literary forms like poetry and prose fiction, from the short story to the intergenerational German family novel to Black feminist speculative fiction. Contributors examine, too, philosophy, performance and multimedia art, political and other forms of public discourse, and film. Topics include, amongst others, the "war on terror," slow environmental violence, the Armenian genocide, portrayals of refugees and migrants, legacies of colonial violence, space travel, and the persistent resonance of the German past. Contributors: Sofía Forchieri, Susanne C. Knittel, Marie Kolkenbrock, Priscilla Layne, Joanne Leal, Francesca Lewis, Frauke Matthes, Lizzie Stewart, Nicola Thomas, and Kathrin Wunderlich.

Ancient warfare is much more than a military affair: it is a total phenomenon, at once political, social and cultural, and it has a lasting impact on the societies that wage war or seek to shelter themselves against it. Thierry Lucas’ book tackles this major issue, focusing on the case of ancient Boeotia in the Classical and Hellenistic periods through five thematic chapters. This study is based on battle narratives from the Classical period, which provide an insight into the workings of the Boeotian army at the time of the Peloponnesian War and during the period of Theban hegemony, as well as on the rich epigraphic documentation from the Hellenistic period. These data, combined with archaeological, iconographic, and numismatic evidence, draw a picture of a military system that permeates all aspects of Boeotian society, in terms of institutions, religion and culture. Even in the Hellenistic period, despite the Confederacy’s minor role on the international stage, the epigraphic evidence shows a koinon with well-honed and fully functional military institutions, constantly adapting to evolving warfare practices which reveal a highly developed military culture. In a nutshell, this book offers the first comprehensive and long-term overview of an ancient federal military system. It would be misleading to see it as just another volume of Boeotian studies: far more than a strictly regional analysis, this study is a true a paradigm of military history in the ancient Greek world.

It happens that very often a city does not reveal its past, as if they were the lines of a hand. These words, inspired to Italo Calvino, and his “Invisible Cities”, are suitable to women’s history of a city: almost completely absent in its streets' names, they re-emerge though from its monuments. The project of a podcast-video "Naples: the city, the women" (2022; 2023; 2024; 2025) in 23 clips, from which today comes a book, that collects its texts, highlight women from every era and sector, linking their names to significant places for the history itself of Naples and celebrating their precious contribution.

Natural resources are necessary for meeting simple human needs such as food, water, clothing, shelter, and air. They are part of humanity’s natural heritage or protected in nature reserves. Therefore, sustainable management of natural resources is crucial to ensure the stability of the ecosystem, prevent further damage to the environment, and avoid over-consumption of the resources. For the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved, it is crucial that natural resources be protected from being destroyed or overused. In addition, proper care of these resources will help them sustain for a long period of time to meet the needs of future generations. The global community has become increasingly aware of the importance of sustainable natural resources management. As highlighted in this book, it can be achieved through multiple approaches of top-down, adaptive management, integrated natural resources management, and community-based resources management. This book discusses the theories, practices, and findings on effective natural resource management being practiced in many parts of the world.
