The lengthening of life is at the center of major societal challenges. Whether these challenges concern individual health or general living together, we will all be led to discover the many changes that aging directly or indirectly implies in the lives of everyone. To give some elements of understanding to people who might have questions on this subject, the authors draw on the lessons learned from the European SHARE survey. Since 2004, SHARE has been following cohorts of people aged 50+ in Europe in order to analyze the interactions between different dimensions: family, social relationships, work and retirement, physical and mental health, living conditions, etc. The information collected in the framework of this project has allowed the realization of multiple research studies, many of them interdisciplinary, a selection of which is presented in a popularized manner throughout the twenty chapters of this book. These chapters illustrate the extent to which reality often runs counter to preconceived ideas about aging. Coupled with new insights from the summer 2020 SHARE-COVID, this knowledge becomes even more valuable in understanding the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic will have on the elderly population in European countries. The authors introduce this topic in the 21st chapter of this book. We hope that curious readers will find the information useful for themselves and for those around them.

In 1734 Charles of Bourbon’s accession to the Neapolitan throne put an end to the Two Sicilies’ centuries-old dependency on foreign and non-resident monarchs. Thus a royal court took shape, and shortly thereafter became a matter of admiration to diplomats and foreign travelers, as well as a symbol of reinforcement of the State’s authority and autonomy. This volume investigates Charles’ and Maria Amalia’s court, that has long been neglected by historians, from different points of view: continuity and changes with respect to previous viceregal models and other European models, the symbolic importance of ceremonies and etiquette in creating hierarchies, the architectural scenarios and the plurality of locations (Naples, Capodimonte, Caserta, Carditello, Portici, Persano). Weddings, births, funerals, theatrical performances and archaeological excavations, hunting meetings and secular and religious ceremonies: for the king, all these were occasions to exhibit his majesty and munificence, and to celebrate the union between himself and his subjects. Even bows and hand-kissing could serve to build a society of good manners and to forge a prominent image of the Neapolitan State on the European stage.

Aquest volum recull les contribucions que es van presentar a la vint-i-cinquena edició del Col·loqui Lingüístic de la Universitat de Barcelona (CLUB 25), el qual, amb el títol «Un CLUB més que un Club: 25 anys enraonant sobre la llengua», tingué lloc el 17 de novembre de 2017. En aquesta ocasió es proposà un disseny basat en dues taules rodones: la primera, «L’abast, les possibilitats i els límits de les polítiques lingüístiques» es dedica a qüestions relacionades amb la sociolingüística, i la segona, «Estàndard, dialectes i dialèctica», se centra en aspectes vinculats a la dialectologia. A més de les presentacions individuals, centrades exclusivament en el català, el llibre inclou dues noves contribucions que examinen l’estat del basc i del gallec des de l’òptica integrada de la sociolingüística i de la dialectologia.

Differenziert und kritisch nimmt diese Studie Konzepte und Gebrauchsweisen des Körpers in der Institution Schule in den Blick. Vom Topos der Disziplinierung des Schülerkörpers führt die Analyse zum gelehrigen »Lehrkörper«, an dem der pädagogische Diskurs über eine »körperbewusste Lernkultur« ansetzt. Um die stets strukturell und diskursiv durchzogenen Interaktionen und Körperpraktiken herauszuarbeiten, verschränkt die Studie ethnographische Beobachtungen mit einer Analyse diskursiver Praktiken. So werden nicht nur die Kontexte der möglichen Denkweisen von in der Schule Handelnden offengelegt, auf die sich schulisches Handeln und Alltagspragmatiken - bewusst oder unbewusst - beziehen, sondern es wird zugleich ein bedeutsamer methodologischer Beitrag für die qualitative Bildungsforschung geleistet.

Las Casas est sans conteste l'une des « figures coloniales » les plus passionnantes et controversées dans le champ de études hispaniques, latino-américaines et caribéennes. Les motifs généralement associés à Las Casas sont aussi divers que variés ; ils portent en creux des enjeux tout à la fois épistémologiques, politiques et imaginaires : antiespagnol, défenseur des Indiens (et selon certain-e-s des Noirs), anticolonialiste avant la lettre, représentant frustré d'une véritable rencontre entre l'Europe et le « Nouveau mondes », colonialiste à visage faussement humain, illuminé... À cela s'ajoute la question (polémique) de sa responsabilité dans la mise en esclavage néfaste des Noir-e-s, suite à la formulation de son Onzième Remède/solution en 1516. Le présent ouvrage, transdisciplinaire et international, vise à revenir, partiellement mais rigoureusement, sur les circonstances historiques, politiques, économiques et imaginaires qui ont présidé à la dite proposition naguère faite par Las Casas, ainsi que, finalement, d'autres avant ou en même temps que lui. Par ce biais, son souci à lui était de libérer les Indiens des affres de l'exploitation espagnole qu'ils subissaient cruellement tout en se gardant de mettre en péril les intérêts de la couronne espagnole et des « colons missionnaires » engagés dans l'entreprise coloniale. Mais il s'agit aussi, dans cet ouvrage d'affranchir Las Casas de l'emprise des lectures purement historiennes qui en revendiquent le monopole, en examinant comment son itinéraire (formation, combats et conversions, publications, sa figure devenue mythique, etc.) est transcrit dans d'autres productions discursives et symboliques contemporaines.

This open-access publication examines the organisational mechanisms that enable the commercial real estate industry to better withstand economic headwinds and more quickly recover from downturns. With geographic focus on the United Kingdom and Germany, it sheds light on the alternative lending space and explores how debt funds prepare to weather economic turbulence by adopting effective loan risk management practices. Given the significant market share of debt funds and their potential for future growth, the insights provided by industry experts into this rather opaque sector are pertinent and satisfy an urgent need. The publication derives key success factors for effective loan risk management from experience and distils them for practical application. It investigates the corporate structures, processes, cultures and relationships of debt funds. Particular focus falls on the operational practices of loan risk management, and the human resources and infrastructural requirements for success. The findings that are presented are relevant to practitioners, market analysts and academic researchers alike.

This book is a holistic and self-contained treatment of the analysis and numerics of random differential equations from a problem-centred point of view. An interdisciplinary approach is applied by considering state-of-the-art concepts of both dynamical systems and scientific computing. The red line pervading this book is the two-fold reduction of a random partial differential equation disturbed by some external force as present in many important applications in science and engineering. First, the random partial differential equation is reduced to a set of random ordinary differential equations in the spirit of the method of lines. These are then further reduced to a family of (deterministic) ordinary differential equations. The monograph will be of benefit, not only to mathematicians, but can also be used for interdisciplinary courses in informatics and engineering.

This open access book explores the various manifestations of the archangel Michael in history, politics, and popular culture. One of the most venerated intermediate beings of the belief systems of all Christian traditions, the archangel Michael has assumed multiple roles that go far beyond the ways in which he has been defined by his major cults. Chapters explore how the archangel Michael has often accompanied processes of Christianization as well as being the divine messenger par excellence. Covering a broad variety of academic perspectives and historical contexts, the book explores how the archangel Michael has subsumed ancient cults, been endowed with magical and ritual powers and guided religious and secular leaders in their exploits. The figure of the archangel Michael is shown to have even inspired educational systems, and in more recent times become a “commercial brand” of blessings and protections. Going beyond orthodoxies, this book reveals how the history and interpretations of the Archangel’s manifestations have been redefined by Christians of Adventist beliefs, by politicians using religious apocalypse in their rhetoric, and by New Age leaders in highly innovative and individualistic manners. There is an increase in reporting of marine litter in coastal ecosystems globally, especially in recent years. A literature review was carried out to identify the primary impacts and effects its presence may have on coastal ecosystems worldwide. Various search combinations in the search engine SCOPUS were performed considering 'impacts', 'effects', 'marine litter', 'marine debris', and 'coastal', for a total of 939 studies. Studies considered were published from 1974 to 2024 and an important increase in publications was observed over the last decade, especially for scientific articles. Next, search terms for three categories of predefined impacts and effects were used to identify the main research directions and emerging areas of interest within coastal marine litter research. Overall, this study highlights the focus and trends of current marine litter research globally.

This book is about scientific inquiry. Designed for early and mid-career researchers, it is a practical manual for conducting and communicating high-quality research in (mathematics) education. Based on the authors’ extensive experience as researchers, as mentors, and as members of the editorial team for the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME), this book directly speaks to researchers and their communities about each phase of the process for conceptualizing, conducting, and communicating high-quality research in (mathematics) education. In the late 2010s, both JRME and Educational Studies in Mathematics celebrated 50 years of publishing high-quality research in mathematics education. Many advances in the field have occurred since the establishment of these journals, and these anniversaries marked a milestone in research in mathematics education. Indeed, fifty years represents a small step for human history but a giant leap for mathematics education. The educational research community in general (and the mathematics education community in particular) has strongly advocated for original research, placing great emphasis on building knowledge and capacity in the field. Because it is an interdisciplinary field, mathematics education has integrated means and methods for scientific inquiry from multiple disciplines. Now that the field is gaining maturity, it is a good time to take a step back and systematically consider how mathematics education researchers can engage in significant, impactful scientific inquiry.
