The recent global events of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in 2020 have alerted the world to the urgent need to develop fast, sensitive, simple, and inexpensive analytical tools that are capable of carrying out a large number of quantitative analyses, not only in centralized laboratories and core facilities but also on site and for point-of-care applications. In particular, in the case of immunological tests, the required sensitivity and specificity is often lacking when carrying out large-scale screening using decentralized methods, while a centralized laboratory with qualified personnel is required for providing quantitative and reliable responses. The advantages typical of electrochemical and optical biosensors (low cost and easy transduction) can nowadays be complemented in terms of improved sensitivity by combining electrochemistry (EC) with optical techniques such as electrochemiluminescence (ECL), EC/surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), and EC/surface plasmon resonance (SPR). This Special Issue addresses existing knowledge gaps and aids in exploring new approaches, solutions, and applications for opto-electrochemical biosensors in the quantitative detection of disease markers, such as cancer biomarkers proteins and allergens, and pathogenic agents such as viruses. Included are seven peer-reviewed papers that cover a range of subjects and applications related to the strategies developed for early diagnosis.

The present study aims to examine the presence of allegory in literary works in prose, limiting the attention to a specific area of the second half of the twentieth century called ‘letteratura di ricerca’. After discussing the most important theories about ‘modern allegory’, and particularly the debate that has developed in the Italian literary critic around the ‘80s, a series of textual analysis are gathered, focusing on several authors, such as Manganelli, Morselli, Volponi, Malerba, Arbasino, Sanguineti, Di Marco. As we can see from the exam of these works, narrative allegories have an impact both on the formal and the content-related level: the allegorical impulse can affect the structure of a novel, its formal aspects and its diegesis, as well as its relations with literary genres.

Sympozjum Egejskie: Papers in Aegean Archaeology is a peer-reviewed sub-series of Warsaw Studies in Archaeology. It has been designed to fulfil the role of a platform for presenting and introducing a wide range of new research approaches and themes within the broad area of Aegean Archaeology. This is primarily achieved through showcasing the work of newcomers to the discipline, in other words those scholars who are currently at the beginning of their research career in the field of Aegean Archaeology, as well as scholars working outside the traditional university structure such as independent scholars, professional field archaeologists, museum curators, and conservators. It is our hope that this series will serve as a concise guide to the most recent research undertaken by early career scholars and the diverse and inspiring new trends in the archaeology of the Prehistoric Aegean, as well as shining a light on the future direction of the discipline.

In October 2009 it was reported that 68 of 101 patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) in the United States, when tested, were infected with a novel gamma retrovirus, xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus (XMRV) (Lombardi et al., 2009). XMRV is a recently discovered human gammaretrovirus first described in prostate cancers that shares significant homology with murine leukemia virus (MLV) (Ursiman et al., 2006). It is known that XMRV can cause leukemias and sarcomas in several rodent, feline, and primate species but has not been shown to cause disease in humans. XMRV was detectable in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and plasma of individuals diagnosed with CFS (Lombardi et al., 2009). After this report was published there was a great deal of uncertainty surrounding this emergent virus and its involvement in the etiology of CFS. The uncertainty was, in part, due to CFS being a complex, poorly understood multi-system disorder with different disease criteria used for its diagnosis. CFS, also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), is a debilitating disease of unknown origin that is estimated to affect 17 million people worldwide. The initial report connecting XMRV to prostate cancers and CFS garnered significant media and scientific interest since it provided a potential Susie ElSaadany2**, Tamer Oraby1 * Daniel Krewski1, 4 and Peter R. In a recent paper we (Speelman & McGann, 2013) argued that psychology’s reliance on data analysis methods that are based on group averages has resulted in a science of group phenomena that may be misleading about the nature of and reasons for individual behaviour. The paper highlighted a tension between a science in search of general laws on the one hand, and the individual, variable, and diverse nature of human behaviour on the other. This Research Topic explored this concern about the pitfalls of using the mean for the basis of psychological science. The problem is universal in its applicability to psychology, and opinion papers, reviews, and original empirical research from all areas of the discipline were invited. A total of 16 authors contributed 9 articles to the Topic. The range of issues that the authors viewed through the lens provided is impressive. The papers in this collection include a range of perspectives that provide concrete examples of how to approach research design, data collection, and analysis differently. No one contribution will provide a solution to our multifarious challenges, but nor should it. Our subject matter is complex and subtle, our investigations and methodological techniques will need to be equally so.

Dyslipidemia is an important risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, despite current traditional therapies (e.g., statins), significant residual risks for the onset of ASCVD remain, warranting the need to better understand newer therapeutic options for diminishing this prospect. This Special Issue will focus on state-of-the-art concepts in the evaluation and management of dyslipidemia, including the rationale for newly set goals in the lipid treatment of this disease given the recent international guidelines, global trends in the epidemiology of dyslipidemia, the latest concepts and therapies in the evaluation and management of familial hypercholesterolemia, novel therapies for lowering LDL-C beyond statin therapy, the status of lipoprotein(a) as a causal risk factor and newer therapeutic approaches to address it, the evaluation and management of dyslipidemia in children, current and emerging therapies for hypertriglyceridemia, and nutraceuticals to treat dyslipidemia in patients with COVID-19. This Special Issue will discuss state-of-the-art clinical trials and other research developments regarding newer and emerging therapies for the management of dyslipidemia to reduce the residual risks of ASCVD. The hope is to provide clinicians with the latest information on the key aspects of the evaluation and treatment of dyslipidemia, including newer non-statin approaches for decreasing the residual risks of ASCVD, such as the settings of elevated LDL-C, lipoprotein(a), and familial hypercholesterolemia.

The chapter presents the social determinants of the EGD, the extent of poverty and social exclusion as well as persistent social inequalities in the EU, which remain unnoticed in the strategy. The social aspect of the EGD is expressed by the concept of a “just transition”, pointing to the circumstances conducive to its implementation, as well as mitigating the effects of energy poverty. The Mechanism to Support a Just Transition in the European Union is also presented.
