Ancient fables have come down to us in many forms: They were published as fable collections both in prose and verse or embedded in literary works of other genres. The contributions to this volume shed light on the interaction between fables and these literary genres and give an overview of fables from early Greek to medieval literature. They seek to ask what role fables play in individual genres, and which genres in turn find an echo in fables. In the case of fables embedded in other genres, the contributions ask as to which fables are chosen for which theme or genre and how they relate to it, how fables are adapted in other texts, how these embeddings are marked at a textual level, and what purpose they serve. In the case of other genres influencing fable collections, the volume illustrates how fables deal with the question of genre more generally but also with specific works or authors, how they approximate and, at the same time, distinguish themselves from these influences, what the aim of this approximation might be and through which means references to genres are made. The 21 contributions by internationally renowned fable scholars provide, for the first time, an overview of the interaction of fables and other genres.

The main purpose of the monograph is to present the issues related to the economic and social development of the Russian Federation. The aim of the work was achieved through a critical analysis of the literature on the subject in Russian and Polish. In addition, the work uses Russian legal acts and state reports on the Russian economy. Particular attention was paid to the issue of mineral resources, which are the foundations of the economy of the Russian Federation.

This special issue on "Plant Proteomics" aims to highlight the diverse applications of proteomics in understanding plant molecular responses to various biotic and abiotic challenges. Recent advancement in mass spectrometry, complemented with the availability of more complete genome-sequence data and modern bioinformatics, has made proteomics a fast, sensitive and reliable technique to identify and characterize novel proteins and to follow temporal changes in protein relative abundances under adverse environmental conditions. This issue includes 4 reviews and 8 original articles primarily on environmental proteomics studies.

This Open-Access-book addresses the issue of translating mathematical expressions from LaTeX to the syntax of Computer Algebra Systems (CAS). Over the past decades, especially in the domain of Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), LaTeX has become the de-facto standard to typeset mathematical formulae in publications. Since scientists are generally required to publish their work, LaTeX has become an integral part of today's publishing workflow. On the other hand, modern research increasingly relies on CAS to simplify, manipulate, compute, and visualize mathematics. However, existing LaTeX import functions in CAS are limited to simple arithmetic expressions and are, therefore, insufficient for most use cases. Consequently, the workflow of experimenting and publishing in the Sciences often includes time-consuming and error-prone manual conversions between presentational LaTeX and computational CAS formats. To address the lack of a reliable and comprehensive translation tool between LaTeX and CAS, this thesis makes the following three contributions. First, it provides an approach to semantically enhance LaTeX expressions with sufficient semantic information for translations into CAS syntaxes. Second, it demonstrates the first context-aware LaTeX to CAS translation framework LaCASt. Third, the thesis provides a novel approach to evaluate the performance for LaTeX to CAS translations on large-scaled datasets with an automatic verification of equations in digital mathematical libraries. This is an open access book.

Aim of the volume is the analysis of the entanglement of religious communication and city life during an arc of time that is characterised by dramatic and even contradicting developments. Bringing together textual analyses and archaelogical case studies in a comparative perspective, the volume zooms in on the historical context of the advanced imperial and late antique Mediterranean space (2nd–8th centuries CE).

With the painting The Wind Bride (1914, see cover), the painter Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) depicted the climax of his amorous relationship with Alma Mahler. The amour fou ended in disappointment, which manifested itself in a symbolic overpainting - the psychologically positive red gave way to a cool blue. In Kokoschka's case, the urge for self-expression within the framework of a clearly defined artist's image began at the age of 22. He created this image in an economically determined manner, which became an artistic myth throughout his life through the blending of fantasy stories and lived experience and still determines and often falsifies the interpretation of his works from the Expressionist phase today. In his stories and lectures, reality and self-presentation were transfigured into an artistic myth to which the scientific and art-historical biography succumbed. Only recently have art historians tended to interpret the artist in terms of marketing strategy. In Kokoschka's case, it was not gaps in his memory or cognitive illusions that formed his artistic myth - it was the deliberate, all-encompassing staging.

This contribution focuses on the memory of older women, in the role of pupils and teachers. The starting point is the awareness of the role that the elderly person plays for younger generations, as an agent of transformation and guardian of memory. The first results of a research started in the territory of Lucera (Foggia, Italy) are provided, aimed at reconstructing the life of the school after the Second World War.

Progress within mathematics is based on innovative ideas comprising a kind of cycle that starts from an identified need to develop a solution. First of all, this need is transformed in a problem that must be clearly defined in order to find a solution. In classical mathematics, a lot of computations are involved, and domains are used (including in algebra, geometry, classical logic, set theory, mathematical analyses, statistics, etc.). Applied mathematics focuses on mathematical principles and involves the application of mathematics to problems that arise in various areas, such as engineering or other domains of science or life. All these inform the development of new or improved methods, which allow us to obtain solutions for new problems.

Rule and resistance can no longer be understood in national contexts only. They both have transnationalised over the last decades. The scholarly discourse, however, still lags behind these developments. While International Relations only sees institutional “governance”, social movement studies only see instances of resistance. Both, however, lack the necessary vocabulary to describe the dynamic interplay between systems of rule and resistance. While we are governed by transnational structures of rule, a systematic analysis of how this operates and how it can be resisted remains to be developed. This open access book develops an understanding of these power relations through rich empirical case studies of different forms of rule-resistance relationships. Some resistant groups demand reforms of particular policies and institutions. Others attack institutions head-on. Yet other actors attempt to escape the rules they reject. Which forms of resistance can we expect under different kinds of rule? How can we understand transnational rule in the first place? The book gives new inspiring answers to these difficult questions. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by Goethe University Frankfurt am Main

The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.
