We are often confronted with unknown events that plunge us into ignorance, unpredictability, and various hardships. In such situations, it is essential how fundamental human values and rights such as dignity, freedom, equality, and solidarity are protected. Ensuring human rights in contemporary society is a complex area described in this book from the perspective of conceptualising and defining human rights, institutional responses, and practices to protect human rights, ensuring social justice and equality in contemporary society. The book is a compilation of interdisciplinary and international experiences in researching human rights, responding to human rights violations, and ensuring the enforcement of rights at the level of the daily lives of individuals, communities, and society as a whole.

This work covers the topic of micromechanical modeling of the elastic and fatigue behavior of short glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites (SFRTs). A novel algorithm extracts microstructural data from x-ray micro-computed tomography scans. Analytical homogenization schemes are studied and used to predict elastic properties, while a high cycle fatigue model using the Two-Step scheme incorporates damage variables for fibers and matrix, predicting fatigue limits.

This seminal volume offers a systematic analysis of the factors, rationales, and evolving forms of private philanthropic engagement in education from countries across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Providing a critical and nuanced examination into the dynamics of private philanthropy’s role in education, the volume features a diverse range of case studies from Lebanon, Malaysia, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina, furthering debate at the intersection between philanthropy and education policy. Chapters showcase a variety of methodologies such as network analysis to explore philanthropic foundations such as the Lemann Foundation in Brazil, Grupo Luksic in Chile, and Fundación Perez Companc in Argentina, as well as European philanthropic foundations active in sub-Saharan Africa, providing a novel, more regionally focused perspective on education and philanthropy. Other chapters employ a variety of research methods to explore how these non-state actors promote what are thought to be politically and economically expedient policies. Documentary analysis of archival sources, interviews, institutional theory, Resource Dependence Theory, Bourdieusian theoretical frameworks, and critical policy analysis also feature in the book. Offering insights and direction for future research in the field, this volume will be of interest to scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students in international and comparative education and education policy. Policymakers as well as regional and international organizations, including NGOs and INGOs, that support educational interventions in the Global South will also find the volume of use.

Biometals such as copper, zinc and iron have key biological functions, however, aberrant metabolism can lead to detrimental effects on cell function and survival. These biometals have important roles in the brain, driving cellular respiration, antioxidant activity, intracellular signaling and many additional structural and enzymatic functions. There is now considerable evidence that abnormal biometal homeostasis is a key feature of many neurodegenerative diseases and may have an important role in the onset and progression of disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, prion and motor neuron diseases. Recent studies also support biometal roles in a number of less common neurodegenerative disorders. The role of biometals in a growing list of brain disorders is supported by evidence from a wide range of sources including molecular genetics, biochemical studies and biometal imaging. These studies have spurred a growing interest in understanding the role of biometals in brain function and disease as well as the development of therapeutic approaches that may be able to restore the altered biometal chemistry of the brain. These approaches range from genetic manipulation of biometal transport to chelation of excess metals or delivery of metals where levels are deficient. A number of these approaches are offering promising results in cellular and animal models of neurodegeneration with successful translation to pre-clinical and clinical trials. At a time of aging populations and slow progress in development of neurotherapeutics to treat age-related neurodegenerative diseases, there is now a critical need to further our understanding of biometals in neurodegeneration. This issue covers a broad range of topics related to biometals and their role in neurodegeneration. It is hoped that this will inspire greater discussion and exchange of ideas in this crucial area of research and lead to positive outcomes for sufferers of these neurodegenerative diseases.

This open access book takes the biographical case of German feminist Käthe Schirmacher (1865–1930), a multilingual translator, widely travelled writer of fiction and non-fiction, and a disputatious activist to examine the travel and translation of ideas between the women’s movements that emerged in many countries in the late 19th and early 20th century. It discusses practices such as translating, interpreting, and excerpting from journals and books that spawned and supported transnational civic spaces and develops a theoretical framework to analyse these practices. It examines translations of literary, scholarly and political texts and their contexts. The book will be of interest to academics as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of modern history, women’s and gender history, cultural studies, transnational and transfer history, translation studies, history and theory of biography.

Maritime friction among powers, great and small, has escalated in the “Near Seas” region, including East China, Yellow, and South China Seas, largely because China has militarized that region by constructing artificial islands, and then fortifying them. United States warships repeatedly have conducted “Freedom of Navigation Operations” (FOPs) in the region, as have British, Indian, and Japanese warships, with France joining that list in early 2021 also. At the same time, China’s “Belt and Road Initiative” streams economically across Eurasia, with rising debt. This paper will address the objectives of China, the West, and neighbouring Asian countries in terms of increasing, decreasing, or replacing tensions in the region, as “empires” old, new, reincarnated and imaginary converge to participate in this fray. Inevitably, risk prevails, opportunities do also, as once-proud empires such as Britain, France, Russia, and Japan join in to confound if not deter China in its transparent effort as a rising power to control shipping and land transportation in this strategic but fragile corridor that connects Europe and the Middle East with Asia, vital to transporting raw materials, particularly energy, Eastward, and finished products, especially electronics and solar panels, Westward. Crucial issues emerging at a critical time require immediate but careful rethinking of Asia in world politics. Although a pandemic has altered and delayed the course of trade in 2020 and 2021, this may be both blessing and curse, a blessing in the sense that emerging power houses in Asia as well as Oceana have endeavoured to commit more resources toward augmenting the traditional Western powers, motivating them to become stronger Allies of the West. On the other hand, a curse, to the extent the opportunity for conflict increases as it has unfolded in Afghanistan over the summer of 2021. Perhaps this will inspire a rapprochement with China and instil in China a realistic expectation of achieving economic growth in moderation over a gradual time in contrast to a growth spurt in the short term that would lead to conflict and set China back much as Japanese aggression before 1945 led to warfare ending in Japan’s defeat and Allied victory. A desired outcome such as this may be unlikely, however, given China’s reported inroads into Afghanistan, rising threats to Taiwan.
