This book examines how the authoritarian regimes of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan exploited the Covid-19 pandemic to consolidate their political control over Central Asia. Through restrictive policies and strategic manipulation, these governments reshaped the region’s politics and societies during 2020–2022. This volume offers readers an insight into three key areas where Central Asia’s pandemic power grab was most visible: mobility control, whereby restrictive legislation limited freedom of movement and suppressed dissent; authoritarian information flows, whereby COVID-19–related measures aligned media and digital information to government messaging, further curtailing freedom of expression; and the international politics of the pandemic, whereby the regimes capitalised on global instability to strengthen their kleptocratic hold over Central Asia’s politics and society. This book provides a detailed analysis of these strategies, offering a compelling exploration of how crises can be used to entrench authoritarianism. It is ideal for scholars, students, and professionals in political science, international relations, and Central Asian Studies. The book is also valuable to readers interested in understanding the intersection between public health crises and authoritarian governance. Le présent ouvrage a pour objectif d’éclairer les relations que l’affiche et les affichistes ont entretenues avec la politique et les dirigeants politiques, afin de mieux comprendre comment durant la période stalinienne, les affichistes polonais ont-ils pu disposer d’une si grande liberté de création qu’elle leur a permis de s’inspirer discrètement des influences de l’art occidental et ainsi de continuer à créer selon des courants modernes ? A la fin de la guerre, la principale question qui anime la vie artistique concerne le type d’art qui sera légitimé par les nouvelles instances politiques. Alors que les discussions artistiques oscillent autour du concept problématique de « réalisme », l’arrivée des Soviétiques introduit une nouvelle esthétique, caractérisée par un aspect narratif et descriptif et par une nature étrangère à la tradition du graphisme polonais de l’entre-deux-guerres. Dans la seconde moitié des années 1940, l’affiche cinématographique d’auteur, qui s’oppose à la production commerciale occidentale, émerge au moment de la politique anti-américaine du début de la guerre froide. Durant la période du réalisme socialiste, ouverte en Pologne en 1949, l’art est contraint de suivre des préceptes quelque peu imprécis quant au style, mais très astreignants, s’agissant aussi bien du devoir de soumettre son « je » d’artiste à l’idéologie en vigueur que du devoir de produire l’art pour les « masses travailleuses ».

Direct service workers (DSWs) provide personal care or nonmedical services to individuals who need assistance with activities of daily living. Direct service work is low-paying and very physically and emotionally demanding, and turnover rates among DSWs are high. In 2003-2004, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services funded ten efforts to increase recruitment and retention among DSWs. This volume evaluates these efforts.

Which forms of agency does literature offer to the reader in the twenty-first century? This study investigates migrant lives in contemporary fiction published by young British Asian writers. Examining the protagonists’ ideas of ›success‹ in becoming a full member of their society, Jessica Fischer carves out the naturalised model of homo economicus in these texts and in contemporary fiction more generally. She draws attention to the enterprising self as the preferred subject in today’s hegemonic discourses and postulates a new conceptualisation of ›agency‹. This book offers an interdisciplinary approach to narratives of transformation. Moreover, it is an urgently needed combination of cultural and postcolonial studies that tackles ethical questions concerning the normative construction of the subject in identity politics.

This open access book gives both a theoretical and practical overview of several important aspects of additive manufacturing (AM). It is written in an educative style to enable the reader to understand and apply the material. It begins with an introduction to AM technologies and the general workflow, as well as an overview of the current standards within AM. In the following chapter, a more in-depth description is given of design optimization and simulation for AM in polymers and metals, including practical guidelines for topology optimization and the use of lattice structures. Special attention is also given to the economics of AM and when the technology offers a benefit compared to conventional manufacturing processes. This is followed by a chapter with practical insights into how AM materials and processing parameters are developed for both material extrusion and powder bed fusion. The final chapter describes functionally graded AM in various materials and technologies. Throughout the book, a large number of industrial applications are described to exemplify the benefits of AM.

This work provides new insights into macro- and microphysical properties of Arctic mixed-phase clouds: first, by comparing semi-idealized large eddy simulations with observations; second, by dissecting the influences of different surface types and boundary layer structures on Arctic mixed- phase clouds; third, by elucidating the dissipation process; and finally by analyzing the main microphysical processes inside Arctic mixed-phase clouds.

Le 10 mai 1981, François Mitterrand était élu président de la République. Si elle a marqué une étape importante de la vie politique française, cette victoire de la gauche a revêtu une saveur particulière en Bretagne. En effet, l’arrivée du candidat socialiste à la tête de l’État a marqué aussi l’aboutissement de la mobilisation antinucléaire de Plogoff. Voici la toute première analyse complète de cette mobilisation devenue emblématique. Depuis les réunions publiques initiales dans un bistrot d’Erdeven en 1974, jusqu’aux négociations avec le nouveau pouvoir socialiste pour faire annuler le projet de Plogoff, il aura fallu sept années de mobilisation pour accomplir une gageure exceptionnelle : faire entendre raison à l’État à propos de son programme nucléaire civil. À partir d’une enquête qui s’est appuyée sur des entretiens et de nombreuses sources documentaires, Gilles Simon déroule le fil de cette mobilisation. L’auteur montre que l’aboutissement de ce mouvement a été possible parce que les acteurs mobilisés ont effectué un vigoureux travail d’apprentissage socio-politique. Malgré leur relative inexpérience de la lutte sociale, les opposants ont créé un réseau de comités locaux d’information sur le nucléaire (CLIN). Ils ont réussi peu à peu à relier la cause antinucléaire aux idées nouvelles de l’après-Mai 68 et aux préoccupations des habitants. Sur les aires de mobilisation d’Erdeven, de Guimaëc, de Ploumoguer, et de Plogoff, ils ont appris à prendre la parole pour contrer les promoteurs de l’atome civil. Ils ont également appris à monter une manifestation, à communiquer dans les médias, à tisser des liens avec les partis politiques. Au-delà de ces aspects stratégiques, ce livre de sciences sociales s’intéresse aussi à la dimension émotionnelle de la mobilisation. Gilles Simon montre que le mouvement antinucléaire breton s’est appuyé sur un imaginaire riche et relié à une culture qui donnait du sens à l’action collective. Malgré mille difficultés, les opposants ont fait preuve d’une grande créativité, ce qui a donné de la force à la mobilisation, notamment lors de l’enquête d’utilité publique à Plogoff en 1980. Même si les conditions socio-politiques ont beaucoup changé aujourd’hui, en particulier avec l’Internet, la « leçon » de la mobilisation de Plogoff reste actuelle.

La notion de « savoirs » s'en trouve par là-même modifiée. L'Encyclopédie de Diderot est le témoignage le plus brillant de ce nouvel état d'esprit. Au xixe, cet encyclopédisme raisonné continuera de nourrir les principaux courants intellectuels, des saint-simoniens aux penseurs catholiques.

Along with development, parents and children are involved in reciprocal exchanges within which both co-adapt their emerging relationships. With this transactional assumption, the eco-cultural approach stimulates researchers to study parenting from a complex perspective and to consider multiple influences shaping children’s and families’ lives. Improving the energy efficiency of battery electric vehicles increases their range and reduces well-to-wheel emissions. An efficient battery thermal management reduces the energy consumption while taking temperature- dependent battery ageing and power availability into account. This work presents a method for a predictive cooling strategy to reduce the energy consumption, using information about the route ahead and Quantile Neural Networks (Q*NN) for accurate predictions.
