Power is not an unfamiliar concept within the welfare field. Nevertheless, discussions about power relations often concern the relationship between professionals and users of welfare services. Less attention is paid to the power embedded in the frameworks for professionals’ practice, as expressed in written documents. Power in Welfare Texts takes a critical look at current governance documents in the welfare field. The contributions analyze texts on topics such as mental health, child welfare, work, school, integration, and environmental protection. Together, they illustrate how power can be expressed in different welfare contexts. In a time when public documents are largely understood as objective, it is more important than ever to uncover and problematize this power. The contributors have long experience from the university and university-college sector. The editors are Halvor Nordby and Bjarne Øvrelid. Both work at the Department of Social Sciences and Guidance at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences.

The article engages with “alternative selves,” a concept found in The Stone Carvers by a Canadian writer, Jane Urquhart. Her fiction is first seen in the context of selected texts by Lucy Maud Montgomery, Margaret Laurence and Alice Munro, who explore the clash between female characters’ conventional roles and their “secret” selves. My analysis was inspired by Pamela Sue Anderson’s A Feminist Philosophy of Religion, which stresses the need for “reinventing ourselves as other” in the face of biased beliefs and dominant epistemology. In particular, my article refers to Anderson’s concern with Kant’s imaginary from The Critique of Pure Reason, where “the territory of pure understanding” is projected on the island, while desire, chaos and death are identified with the sea. Seen through the prism of a feminist reading of the philosophical imaginary, the sea becomes the female beyond. Urquhart’s three novels: Away, The Stone Carvers and A Map of Glass dissolve Kantian opposition between island and water, by showing how reason is invaded by desire and death, and how the female protagonist embodies the elements that have been repressed. The article ends with the analysis of a Homeric intertext in A Map of Glass, where Sylvia identifies with Odysseus “lashed to the mast” so that he would not respond to the call of the siren song. Reading Homer’s passage on the siren song, one realizes that the use of the Kantian imaginary turns Ithaca into the island of truth, and the sea into the stormy beyond, identified with desire, death and femaleness. While the Odyssey suppresses the dangerous message of the siren song, Urquhart’s fiction rewrites it and reclaims it as positive inspiration for the female protagonist.

The present volume is a collection of select papers presented at Captivating Criminality 8: Crime Fiction, Femininities and Masculinities (Bamberg, July 2022), the eighth annual conference of the International Crime Fiction Association. As gender and crime fiction is a popular topic with researchers from all areas of (world) crime fiction and the contributions ranging from the highly popularised Victorian Jack the Ripper case to contemporary domestic noir novels written by authors such as Gillian Flynn, this book covers crime fiction studies from a broad variety of angles. The chapters in this book cover texts from all over the world in a joint effort to show that crime fiction (studies) is omnipresent, diverse, and – above all – topical and that gender is one of the mainstays of the genre and a determinant of its topicality and diversity.

Despite the billions of dollars invested in digitalization, productivity growth in developed economies remains sluggish and the promised technological revolution has yet to deliver its full potential. This concise book questions why digitalization is not translating into higher productivity and economic expansion, exploring this paradox through the lens of Schumpeter's creative destruction hypothesis. The book diagnoses and analyses the digital economy as the next stage of socio-economic evolution, with a particular focus on the penetration of digital technologies in the industrial economy. It is geographically limited to the countries of the European Union and the United Kingdom, forming a set of 28 highly developed economies. These countries, characterized by a homogeneous institutional order and varying levels of economic development provide excellent material for testing and verifying economic hypotheses, including Schumpeter's theory of creative destruction. In relation to Schumpeter's theory, there is indeed an observed development of a new sector around a technology that is a radical innovation - the Internet - and the development of technologies based on it, AI, blockchain, cloud computing, etc. However, the rate of technical progress is reaching values close to zero, despite the fact that creative destruction should manifest itself in leaps in productivity. The second point of contention with Schumpeter's theory is the question of oligopolies, which should be the environment most conducive to innovation. However, in the case of the digital economy, productivity growth is most strongly influenced by small and micro-enterprises, which may point to different factors of production than in previous industrial revolutions. This is a practical guide for researchers and advanced students of economics.

Chr.

Microbes are ubiquitous and have ecological interactions with almost all life forms. Likewise, humans invariably engage in host-microbial interactions that could induce short-term or long-term effects. Some of these long-term crossover interactions have allowed successful colonization of microbes within or on the human body, collectively known as the human microbiome or human microbiota. The human microbiome is identified as playing a key role in various physiological processes like digestion, immunity, defense, growth, and development. Any dysbiosis in the human microbiome structure could induce the onset of various metabolic or physiological disorders. Cumulatively, the human microbiome is considered as a virtual human organ that is essential for host survival. Additionally, short-term biological interactions of the host and microbes have exposed microbes to the human cellular system. This exposure could have allowed the microbes to invade human cells for their growth and reproduction-induced onset of various infectious diseases. This book incorporates a number of studies highlighting the role of microbes in human health and diseases.

This Special Issue will focus on assistive technology (AT) to address biomechanical and control of movement issues in individuals with impaired health, whether as a result of disability, disease, or injury. All over the world, technologies are developed that make human life richer and more comfortable. However, there are people who are not able to benefit from these technologies. Research can include development of new assistive technology to promote more effective movement, the use of existing technology to assess and treat movement disorders, the use and effectiveness of virtual rehabilitation, or theoretical issues, such as modeling, which underlie the biomechanics or motor control of movement disorders. This Special Issue will also cover Internet of Things (IoT) sensing technology and nursing care robot applications that can be applied to new assistive technologies. IoT includes data, more specifically gathering them efficiently and using them to enable intelligence, control, and new applications.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and is estimated to become the third most common cause of death over the next decade. The knowledge of COPD pathogenesis and the disease course has greatly improved this progression in understanding and continues to have significant implications in the management of this condition. Novel areas of interest in COPD pathogenesis include further development of animal models, a better understanding of the genetics and epigenetics, the role of the microbiome, and an increasing appreciation of the associated comorbidities. This book intends to provide the reader with a brief overview of these topics and also provide an in-depth review of the current nonpharmacological clinical approaches to managing patients with COPD.

The volume contributes to the ongoing debate on the role of multi- and plurilingualism in international scientific communication and seeks to contribute to its possible and necessary conceptualisation in contemporary scientific contexts. The emphasis is placed on the interplay between the acquisition of knowledge and the collective and public dimensions of science. This relationship needs to be analysed as a genuine linguistic challenge, since it implies first and foremost an obligation of the language itself rather than of its speakers. From a linguistic perspective, this is exemplified by the processes of translocating scientific knowledge into different languages, contexts and institutions (mainly through the language of academic teaching); the development of specific technical and scientific domains (such as Medicine); the shaping of (multi- and plurilingual) competence in controversies and explanatory processes in teaching contexts; and (also from the perspective of a Philosophy of Knowledge) the interconnection of epistemic constraints and social strategies in the sciences.
