Certain Diaspora communities, frustrated by a perceived war against the Muslim world, have turned against their adopted homelands, targeting the government and its people by supporting terrorist attacks against Western countries through recruitment, fundraising, and training. The problem is exacerbated by the open borders of globalization. Emerging threats must be identified without alienating Diaspora communities and thereby playing into terrorist hands.

Food and nutrition has been central to human culture, philosophy and science since the beginning of civilisation. However the building blocks of food and nutrition, the nutrients, remained unknown until the late 19th century. Over the next 100 years advances in physics, chemistry and physiology led to rapid developments in our knowledge, first with development of an understanding of energy and the macronutrients, followed by the minerals and vitamins. The first vitamins to be explored scientifically were thiamine, vitamin D and C and in 1935 ascorbic acid was synthesised, beginning the 20th century rapid development of knowledge of nutrients[1]. On ne lit plus guère Alphonse Gratry et c’est dommage, non seulement parce qu’il fut l’un des penseurs religieux les plus marquants du xixe siècle, mais aussi parce qu’il était un écrivain de talent et un témoin averti de son temps. Issu d’un milieu anticlérical de serviteurs de l’Empire napoléonien, converti au catholicisme sous la Restauration, polytechnicien, directeur du collège Stanislas à Paris, puis aumônier de l’École normale supérieure, il a contribué, en 1852, à refonder l’Oratoire de France. Catholique inclassable, pionnier du dialogue œcuménique, militant de la paix, il était persuadé que l’Église de son temps vivait un « moment solennel » de son histoire, comparable en importance à celui de ses origines, duquel dépendrait en grande partie son avenir dans les sociétés occidentales. Philosophe, il est à l’origine du système de pensée le plus complet et le plus caractérisé que le monde catholique français ait produit au xixe siècle, qui a influencé tout une lignée de penseurs indépendants du thomisme. La fin de son existence a cependant été très assombrie par les conséquences de ses prises de position retentissantes contre l’infaillibilité pontificale en 1870, même si son ralliement in extremis au dogme lui a permis d’échapper à une damnatio memoriae qui aurait pu être définitive, mais qui n’a finalement été que provisoire. Le but de cet ouvrage est de faire redécouvrir cette figure majeure de l’histoire religieuse et intellectuelle du xixe siècle, à travers un essai biographique, la première édition critique et intégrale de ses souvenirs et une anthologie de textes représentatifs de la diversité des thèmes de sa pensée comme des formes de son écriture.

Gewalt an Kindern kann sich in vielfältigen Formen physischer und psychischer Gewalt oder Vernachlässigung präsentieren. Die Kindstötung stellt den Kulminationspunkt der Gewalt oder das Resultat einer psychischen Störung der Täterin/des Täters dar. Mit erschreckender Regelmäßigkeit berichten die Medien über Kindstötungen. Die Fälle lösen nicht nur bundesweit Betroffenheit aus, sondern werfen auch Fragen nach Ursachen und effektiven präventiven Schutzmaßnahmen auf. Für Deutschland ist von 1–2 % Kindstötungen unter den Tötungsdelikten auszugehen. Aufgrund der Komplexität der dem Phänomen zugrunde liegenden Problematiken ist aber eine hohe Dunkelziffer anzunehmen, da sich auch hinter dem „Plötzlichen Kindstod“ Infantizide verbergen können und ein „Münchhausen-Syndrom by proxy“ mit dem akzidentellen oder sogar intendierten Kindstod enden kann. Das vorliegende Buch erfasst das Phänomen Kindstod und Kindstötung aus dem Blickwinkel von forensischen Psychiatern, Pädiatern, Rechtsmedizinern und Juristen. Ausgehend von historischen Betrachtungen zeigen die Experten anhand von Untersuchungen und Einzelfällen Spezifika auf, die von großer Bedeutung im medizinischen und juristischen Alltag sind und die in dieser aktuellen und umfassenden Form hiermit erstmals zusammengeführt werden.

Próximos a cumplir el primer quinquenio de los quince años previstos para alcanzar el máximo resultado en la realización de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS), la Universidad del Rosario, en cabeza del Observatorio Legislativo y el Grupo de Investigación en Derechos Humanos, en asociación con la Fundación Hanns Seidel, ha brindado el espacio propicio de investigación para los estudiantes interesados en reflexionar, discutir y proponer trabajos académicos relacionados con los ODS. Así, este libro recoge las ponencias de los estudiantes ganadores del IX Concurso de Semilleros de Investigación, en procura de propiciar espacios académicos de fortalecimiento de la democracia, la institucionalidad y los derechos humanos, dentro de los cuales este concurso se destaca no solo por perdurabilidad en el tiempo, al atender temas coyunturales para el país, sino por la pertinencia de dar valor a la investigación como herramienta de cambio social y como instrumento pedagógico de enseñanza que debe fomentarse en la educación superior.

This dissertation investigates the alternation between synthetic (-est) and analytic (most) superlative forms in English through a two-part empirical study. The first part is based on a large-scale questionnaire examining the influence of social and speaker-related variables such as variety, age, gender, and education, alongside linguistic and complexity-based factors at phonological, syntactic, and pragmatic levels. The study also explores morphosyntactic persistence, assessing how preceding patterns of gradation influence subsequent variant choice. Multifactorial analyses reveal systematic interactions between social and linguistic predictors, supporting the hypothesis that the cognitive facilitation strategy known as more-support (Mondorf 2009) extends to the superlative, while highlighting the limits of a purely complexity-based account. The second part complements these findings with a corpus-based study grounded in usage-based construction grammar and exemplar-theoretic assumptions. Drawing on the GloWbE corpus (US and GB sections), it examines superlative alternation with focus on the morphophonological properties of the adjective, frequency effects (type and token), un-prefixed adjectives (e.g. happy vs. unhappy), and the processing and representation of complex forms (holistic vs. decomposed). Cross-varietal and comparative analyses reveal usage patterns that contextualize and extend the questionnaire findings. From a methodological perspective, the dissertation’s central contribution lies in the triangulation of elicitation and usage data, demonstrating how a multimethod approach enriches our understanding of grammatical variation and morphosyntactic alternations. By integrating controlled elicitation with authentic corpus evidence, the study illuminates the cognitive, linguistic, and social mechanisms underlying superlative strategy choice and provides both theoretical and methodological insights for future research on grammatical variation.

Industrieökonomik ist ein faszinierendes Forschungsgebiet und dazu wirtschaftspolitisch höchst aktuell. In der Industrieökonomik treffen sich Volkswirtschaftslehre und Betriebswirtschaftslehre, die in Deutschland bisher ein eher isoliertes Dasein geführt haben. Mikroökonomische Theorie soll in Kooperation von Volkswirten und Betriebswirten für wirtschaftspolitische Probleme, insbesondere der Wettbewerbs- und Industriepolitik sowie zur Entwicklung von Unternehmensstrategien, fruchtbar gemacht werden. Die Probleme selbst sind im einzelnen nicht neu. Neu ist jedoch die Konfrontation theoretisch abgeleiteter Zusammenhänge mit der Empirie. Mikroökonomische Theorie soll den Charakter eines Glasperlenspiels verlieren und zu empirisch überprüfbaren und überprüften Einsichten führen, und andererseits soll die Betriebswirtschaftslehre eine stärkere theoretische Fundierung erhalten. Diesem Anliegen entsprechend wurden für die Kerntagung des Vereins für Socialpolitik 1993 in Münster Volks- und Betriebswirte, Wirtschaftspolitiker und ein Unternehmer zu Vorträgen eingeladen, die im vorliegenden Band abgedruckt sind. Selbstverständlich ist es nicht möglich, in nur sieben Vorträgen die ganze Spannweite der Industrieökonomik abzudecken. Für die Kerntagung wurde ein gegenwärtig in der Debatte über den Standort Deutschland besonders aktueller Themenkreis gewählt: die Herausforderungen für die Wirtschaftspolitik und die Unternehmensstrategie, die sich aus der Globalisierung der Märkte ergeben. Wie kann die deutsche Wirtschaft in den alten wie in den neuen Bundesländern diesen Herausforderungen erfolgreich begegnen, um ein hohes Niveau ökonomischen Wohlstands und der Beschäftigung zu sichern? Welche Rolle spielen Wettbewerbspolitik und Industriepolitik in diesem Zusammenhang und insbesondere im Kontext des Vertragswerkes von Maastricht? Sind die Konzepte der Wettbewerbspolitik, wie sie traditionell entwickelt und verstanden wurden, noch zeitgemäß oder müssen sie angesichts der Herausforderung der globalen Wirtschaftsverflechtungen und neuer Entwicklungen in der Theorie der Industrieökonomik revidiert werden? Das sind die Fragen, die in den Vorträgen aufgegriffen und behandelt werden.

This book presents and analyzes artistic interactions both within the Soviet bloc and with the West between 1945 and 1989. During the Cold War the exchange of artistic ideas and products united Europe’s avant-garde in a most remarkable way. Despite the Iron Curtain and national and political borders there existed a constant flow of artists, artworks, artistic ideas and practices. The geographic borders of these exchanges have yet to be clearly defined. How were networks, centers, peripheries (local, national and international), scales, and distances constructed? How did (neo)avant-garde tendencies relate with officially sanctioned socialist realism? The literature on the art of Eastern Europe provides a great deal of factual knowledge about a vast cultural space, but mostly through the prism of stereotypes and national preoccupations. By discussing artworks, studying the writings on art, observing artistic evolution and artists’ strategies, as well as the influence of political authorities, art dealers and art critics, the essays in Art beyond Borders compose a transnational history of arts in the Soviet satellite countries in the post war period.

Ethnic American Literatures and Critical Race Narratology explores the relationship between narra¬tive, race, and ethnicity in the United States. Situated at the intersection of narrative theory and context-oriented approaches in race, ethnic, and cultural studies, it interrogates the complex and varied ways in which ethnic American authors use narrative form to engage readers in issues related to race and ethnicity. The book’s international group of contributors covers a wide range of primary texts that belong to the literary traditions of Latinx, African American, Native American, Asian American, Jewish American, and Arab American communities. They demonstrate that paying attention to the formal features of these texts changes our under¬standing of narrative theory and that narrative theories can help us to think about their representations of time and space, the narration of trauma and other emotional memories, and the importance of literary (meta)paratexts, genre structures, and author functions.

Public disclosure strategies aimed at reducing risks and improving goods and services are frequently ineffective or counterproductive. Successful transparency policies must place the needs of ordinary citizens at centre stage and produce information that informs their everyday choices. In particular, the life estimation of P/M ferrous materials by sliding contact fatigue test and tribological performance evaluation of P/M semi-metallic materials are focused and introduced in this book.
