Most Canadians are city dwellers, a fact often unacknowledged by twentieth-century Canadian films, with their preference for themes of wilderness survival or rural life. Modernist Canadian films tend to support what film scholar Jim Leach calls “the nationalist-realist project,” a documentary style that emphasizes the exoticism and mythos of the land. Over the past several decades, however, the hegemony of Anglo-centrism has been challenged by francophone and First Nations perspectives and the character of cities altered by a continued influx of immigrants and the development of cities as economic and technological centers. No longer primarily defined through the lens of rural nostalgia, Canadian urban identity is instead polyphonic, diverse, constructed through multiple discourses and mediums, an exchange rather than a strict orientation. Taking on the urban as setting and subject, filmmakers are ideally poised to create and reflect multiple versions of a single city. Examining fourteen Canadian films produced from 1989 to 2007, including Denys Arcand’s Jésus de Montréal (1989), Jean-Claude Lauzon’s Léolo (1992), Mina Shum’s Double Happiness (1994), Clément Virgo’s Rude (1995), and Guy Maddin’s My Winnipeg (2007), Film and the City is the first comprehensive study of Canadian film and “urbanity”—the totality of urban culture and life. Drawing on film and urban studies and building upon issues of identity formation in Canadian studies, Melnyk considers how filmmakers, films, and urban audiences experience, represent, and interpret urban spatiality, visuality, and orality. In this way, Film and the City argues that Canadian narrative film of the postmodern period has aided in articulating a new national identity.

The creation of the multinational federation involved at the same time the re-creation of the Yugoslav polity and a laborious construction of the sub-state entities and their own political communities. The creation of republican citizenships and the Yugoslav common two-tier or bifurcated citizenship was part and parcel of this intensive construction of modern states within a larger multinational federation. Citizenship was an important attribute of the republics’ statehood, although it was rarely mentioned as such by the authorities and was almost completely neglected by scholars. The institution will show its resilience and importance only later. The constitutional process at the same time seemed endless: post-war Yugoslavia introduced three constitutions between 1945 and 1963, which shaped the country in a different way, oscillating between Yugoslav socialist unity and the decentralization process empowering the republics. The establishment of multinational federation at the formal level and the Yugoslav brand of ‘self-managing socialism’ at the ideological level provided foundation for the new Yugoslav community. However, constant changes opened the whole construction, including citizenship regime, for redefinitions in the next period.

Volume 6, Life Writings of Frontier Women series, ed. Maureen Ursenbach Beecher Mormon culture has produced during its history an unusual number of historically valuable personal writings. Few such diaries, journals, and memoirs published have provided as rich and well rounded a window into their authors' lives and worlds as the diary of Helen Mar Kimball Whitney. Because it provides a rare account of the widely experienced situations and problems faced by widows, her record has relevance far beyond Mormon history though. As a teenager Helen Kimball had been a polygamous wife of Mormon founder Joseph Smith. She subsequently married Horace Whitney. Her children included the noted Mormon author, religious authority, and politician Orson F. Whitney. She herself was a leading woman in her church and society and a writer known especially for her defense of plural marriage. Upon Horace's death, she began keeping a diary. In it, she recorded her economic, physical, and psychological struggles to meet the challenges of widowhood. Her writing was introspective and revelatory. She also commented on the changing society around her, as Salt Lake City in the last decades of the nineteenth century underwent rapid transformation, modernizing and opening up from its pioneer beginnings. She remained a well-connected member of an elite group of leading Latter-day Saint women, and prominent Utah and Mormon historical figures appear frequently in her daily entries. Above all, though, her diary is an unusual record of difficulties faced in many times and places by women, of all classes, whose husbands died and left them without sufficient means to carry on the types of lives to which they had been accustomed.

Agriculture, as a production-oriented sector, entails energy as a substantial input by which global food security is ensured. Agricultural systems require energy for farm machinery and equipment; lighting; heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC); food processing and preservation; fertilizer and chemical production; and water/wastewater treatment/application. Increasing agriculture mechanization mitigates conventional energy reserves that escalate greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. This book aims to offer energy-efficient and/or environment-friendly ways for the agriculture sector to achieve the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals. The book provides cutting-edge research on next-generation agricultural technologies and applications to develop a sustainable solution for modern greenhouses, temperature/humidity control in agriculture, farm storage and drying, crop water requirements, agricultural built environment, and wastewater treatment.

In the nineteenth century, state policy towards prostitution was primarily shaped by an assessment of its role in spreading venereal diseases. In this book, the author traces normative and organisational efforts of the authorities of the Kingdom of Poland, which sought to maintain control over prostitution and the health of women who offered paid sexual services. The author uses data collected by the police and medical authorities supervising legal and illegal prostitution to provide a demographic and sociological picture of the big-city and small-town market of sexual commerce. It was only in the early twentieth century when prostitution became an important subject of the Polish public debate, a process which is described in the book against the backdrop of the major issues and fears of the epoch.

Deep underground mining and surface slope operations face complex geology, making them prone to water-related disasters like landslides and water inrush during extreme rainfall or intense mining activity. These disasters threaten safety, operational stability, and resource efficiency, often causing economic losses and environmental damage. Sustainable mining requires understanding disaster mechanisms, predictive methods, and prevention strategies to reduce waste. Modern technology is vital for disaster prevention and water management. Researchers use interdisciplinary methods to analyze risks. For example, studies on retaining structures in cold regions show prestressed concrete designs reduce dynamic loads, aiding debris flow prevention. Remote sensing and geospatial analysis monitor post-mining land movement and groundwater rebound, revealing links between climate-driven subsidence and mining-induced uplift. This informs environmental management in reclaimed areas. Research also explores groundwater seepage and uneven loading’s effects on roadway stability. Scaled physical modeling, acoustic emission monitoring, and numerical simulations clarify deformation stages and failure mechanisms in waterlogged rock masses, helping predict failure zones and guide targeted reinforcement. Additionally, studies on external factors like impact speed and projectile shape quantify their effects on structural response, offering guidelines for protective designs.

With reportedly over USD50 billion lost annually through graft and illicit practices, combating corruption in Africa has been challenging. However, laws and policies at the continental, regional and national levels have been promulgated and enacted by African leaders. These initiatives have included the establishment of anti-corruption agencies mandated to tackle graft at national level, as well as coordinate bodies at regional and continental lev Yet, given the disparity between the apparent impunity enjoyed by public servants and the anti-corruption rhetoric of governments in the region, the effectiveness of these agencies is viewed with scepticism. This continent-wide study of anti-corruption agencies aims to gauge their relevance and effectiveness by assessing their independence, mandate, available resources, national ownership, capacities and strategic positioning. These surveys include evidence-based recommendations calling for stronger, more relevant and effective institutions that are directly aligned to regional and continental anti-corruption frameworks, such as the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC), which the three countries in this current report Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have all ratified.els to ensure the harmonisation of normative standards and the adoption of best practices in the fight against corruption.

Doing Research in Practical Theology provides a step-by-step introduction to setting up and executing high-quality practical theological research. This "how-to" handbook provides an accessible resource for students in Practical Theology who are in the process of developing and carrying out a research project. The structure systematically follows a number of core questions to be answered in any practical theological study, allowing the reader to reflect on eight basic steps that will help in their research in practical theology. With a pragmatic approach and examples from recently published case studies, this book appeals to researchers in Practical Theology, particularly master’s and PhD students and their supervisors. At the end of each chapter, questions for reflection are presented. These are useful both for executive researchers (whether master’s students or senior researchers) and for those who supervise research (either as master’s thesis supervisor or promotor of a PhD study).

Fire scene investigators examine the physical characteristics of a fire scene and identify and collect physical evidence at the scene. This evidence is then analyzed to help determine whether the cause of the fire was accidental or intentional. During the fire scene investigation, investigators may find evidence that could point to criminal activity, such as accelerants, damaged vehicles, and certain burn patterns. As a study aimed at developing new tools and techniques for interpreting, identifying, and analyzing evidence at the scene of a fire, this book will hopefully contribute to the improvement of fire research and help fill a gap in this field in our country.
