Cosmopolitics and Biopolitics seeks to trace cosmopolitical aesthetics understood not only as the union of art, science, and the right to survive, but also as the prism through which artistic practices are developed around questions connected to transculturality, migration, nomadism, post-gender subjectivities, social and natural sustainability, and new digital technologies. This book’s authors fashion a narrative that moves in the territory of “inbetweenness”, between hospitality and hostility, between welcoming and conflict, between languages and intermediate languages, science, and survival in a world that is “common” more than global.

Slave labor survived the abolition of slavery. Karl Marx analyzed both the role of legal slavery in the original accumulation of the capital and the forms of forced labor inherent to the “free” labor relationships (wage slavery). In the XX century some critics of the prominent social role of labor shown a form of nostalgia for ancient slavery which set free citizens from necessity. Globalized capitalism exploits slaves, even if formally free like in the early modernity, whereas extreme subordination is widespread in developed economies and in sectors employing advanced technologies.

This essay aims to present the first results of an ongoing research project devoted to study the evolution of the economic inequality in Catalonia based on different documentary sources and parameters. Here we focus on the strengths and limits of the rich fiscal sources preserved between the 14th and 18th century allowing us an analysis of inequality. This study is limited to the period before 1716 because we do not consider totally reliable connecting data from taxes before this moment, essentially focused on immovable wealth, with those from the Cadastre, which was levied on a wide range of incomes.

Jacq Vogelaar was the most radical champion of experimental form in post-war Dutch literature. After his debut in 1965, he published a series of novels in which he progressively pushed the dismantling of the traditional narrative form. Jacq Vogelaar was not only an innovator of literary form, but also a leading and often critical voice in the public debate on Dutch literature. By showing Vogelaar’s multifaceted literary activity from diverse perspectives, Woekering en weigering offers a representation of this underrated author that is refreshing and rich in nuance. It is a well-deserved tribute to a literary monument.

The causes and consequences of differences in microbial community structure, defined here as the relative proportions of rare and abundant organisms within a community, are poorly understood. Articles in "The Causes and Consequences of Microbial Community Structure", use empirical or modeling approaches as well as literature reviews to enrich our mechanistic understanding of the controls over the relationship between community structure and ecosystem processes. Specifically, authors address the role of trait distributions and tradeoffs, species-species interactions, evolutionary dynamics, community assembly processes and physical controls in affecting ‘who’s there’ and ‘what they are doing’.

While the first volume presented a younger son of a family of Tyrolese nobility, who strived after social advancement throughout Europe and who succeeded to act the part of a special advisor in service of the sovereign, the documents of his life in the second volume concentrate primarily on feuds, captivities and resolution of conflicts in Tyrol. The conflict over the heritage of Hauenstein leads to captivity, provisional release, appeal to the king, further imprisonment and humiliating submission to the duke of Tyrol. Finally Oswald is granted a reprieve and acquires the property of Hauenstein.

This book provides new and in-depth insights into molecular aspects of plant cell signaling in response to biotic, such as aphid- and grey mold disease-resistance, and abiotic stresses, such as soil salinity and drought stress, and additionally, functional analysis on signaling components involved in flowering, juvenility, GA signaling, and biosynthesis, and miRNA-regulated gene expression. Furthermore, plant acclimation was reported, with emphasis on mechanistic insights into the roles of brassinosteroids, cyclic AMP, and hydrogen sulfide, and the recent advances of transmembrane receptor-like kinases were refined. Clearly, plant cell signaling is an intensive topic and whether it is now or in the future, the emerging technology in functional analysis such as genome editing technologies, high-throughput technologies, integrative multiple-omics as well as bioinformatics can assist researchers to reveal novel aspects of the regulatory mechanisms of plant growth and development, and acclimation to environmental and biotic stresses. The achievement of such research will be useful in improving crop stress tolerances to increase agricultural productivity and sustainability for the food supply of the world.

This open access book investigates the effects of changes in leadership and managerial structures of Nordic universities resulting from reforms in the last decade. It builds on a rich, comparative dataset across a multiplicity of system-wide (macro) and organisational (meso and micro) dimensions, namely: reform or policy initiatives; drivers, aims, instruments and actors; structural changes within universities; strategic and performance management; the rise of accountability regimes; incentive and evaluative systems; and perceived changes/effects by the key actors involved, at various levels. The volume provides critical insights to the larger phenomenon of change and adaptation within the public sector. Its findings and implications are of relevance to social science researchers, policy makers, managers/administrators, and external stakeholders.

Biomedical technology is continually changing, and new approaches are being developed daily. Although widely used, conventional solutions are losing efficacy due to the evolution of microorganisms and the environment. Pathologies and diseases negatively affect humans and animals, but nanotechnology appears promising in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of health conditions. This book examines some of these nanotechnologies, discussing their advantages and limitations. It is organized into four sections and includes ten chapters that address such topics as drug delivery systems for cancer treatment, photodynamic and photothermal treatments for bacterial infections, electrospun fibers for nanomedical applications, monoclonal antibodies, nanotheranostics, and much more.
