This open access book serves as a concise primer introducing the non-specialist reader to the physics of solar energetic particles (SEP). It systematically reviews the evidence for the two main mechanisms which lead to the so-called impulsive and gradual SEP events. This second edition contains two completely new chapters discussing element abundances and shock waves, reflecting new theoretical, modeling, and observational results. Existing chapters have been substantially expanded or updated with additions placed in a broader context. More specifically, the author discusses the timing of the onsets of SEPs, their longitude distributions, their high-energy spectral shapes, their correlations with other solar phenomena, as well as the all-important elemental and isotopic abundances. The book relates impulsive SEP events to magnetic reconnection in solar flares and jets. The concept of shock acceleration by scattering on self-amplified Alfvén waves is introduced, as is the evidence of reacceleration of impulsive-SEP material in the seed population accessed by the shocks in gradual events. The text then develops processes of transport of ions out to an observer. Finally, a technique to determine the source plasma temperature in both impulsive and gradual events is demonstrated. The author also mentions the role of SEP events as a radiation hazard in space and briefly discusses the nature of the main particle telescope designs that have contributed to most of the SEP measurements.

"Strategen im Literaturkampf" is dedicated to the complex relationship between literary writing, poetological reflection and critical commentary using the example of the Austrian writers Thomas Bernhard and Peter Handke. Harald Gschwandtner shows how closely the two authors' aversion to literary criticism is linked to the principles of their own writing. Prose texts, plays, reviews, interviews, speeches, letters and numerous other work materials allow a variety of insights into a conflict-ridden relationship.

The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

Who is employed in further education programmes? What are their qualifications? Under which conditions do they work and how satisfied are they with their work? It is the first study to provide representative data on the qualifications, employment situations and working conditions of employees in the adult and further education industry. The data of this two-step personnel survey was collected in 2014. More than 6,000 adult educators from more than 1,800 training institutions participated in the survey. This study serves as a supplement to educational reporting in Germany, which has hitherto rather been focussed on providers, offers and participation. Furthermore, it offers a reliable basis for assessments regarding the professionalisation of adult and further education. Moreover, the collected data may be used for further research.

In the decades following the Second World War, the existence of authoritarian regimes on the Iberian Peninsula undermined the idea of a "free West." At the same time, Spain and Portugal were emerging as ever more popular holiday destinations for West European tourists. This book analyzes how tourism shaped the relations between West European democracies and the Iberian regimes: Government officials and entrepreneurs established touristic infrastructures, travel writers addressed the tension between visitors’ leisure and locals’ oppression, activists called for a boycott of tourism to the authoritarian regimes. In a period shaped by the Cold War, tourism turned the Iberian regimes into Europe’s favourite dictatorships.

This open access edited volume invites transdisciplinary scholars to re-vision science education in the era of the Anthropocene. The collection assembles the works of educators from many walks of life and areas of practice together to help reorient science education toward the problems and peculiarities associated with the geologic times many call the Anthropocene. It has become evident that science education—the way it is currently institutionalized in various forms of school science, government policy, classroom practice, educational research, and public/private research laboratories—is ill-equipped and ill-conceived to deal with the expansive and urgent contexts of the Anthropocene. Paying homage to myopic knowledge systems, rigid state education directives, and academic-professional communities intent on reproducing the same practices, knowledges, and relationships that have endangered our shared world and shared presents/presence is misdirected. This volume brings together diverse scholars to reimagine the field in times of precarity.

This book deals with the effects of three different learning contexts mainly on adult, but also on adolescent, learners’ language acquisition. The three contexts brought together in the monograph include i) a conventional instructed second language acquisition (ISLA) environment, in which learners receive formal instruction in English as a Foreign Language (EFL); ii) a Study Abroad (SA) context, which learners experience during mobility programmes, when the target language is no longer a foreign but a second language learnt in a naturalistic context; iii) the immersion classroom, also known as an integrated content and language (ICL) setting, in which learners are taught content subjects through the medium of the target language—more often than not English, used as the Lingua Franca (ELF).
