Sigi Jöttkandt's The Nabokov Effect: Reading in the Endgame attends to the ‘lettrocalamity’ that occurs when literature and cinema collide in Vladimir Nabokov’s work. Jöttkandt suspends the long-held critical investment in Nabokov’s authorial control to focus on another principle of representational agency making incursions into his books. Tracing the subterranean network of cross-lingual puns, homophonies, and technical overflows of writing to a cinaesthetic signature system, Jöttkandt recasts the vexed question of Nabokov’s relation to psychoanalysis. A pioneer of too-close reading, Nabokov offers himself, Jöttkandt argues, as the tipping point of perceptual and epistemological systems that are in the process of devouring themselves. The ensuing ‘Nabokov effect’ is both an assault on teleological models, and an opening onto other forms of reading and listening, which Jöttkandt argues was always latent in psychoanalysis. In this book, Nabokov emerges as the writer for humanity’s endgame, architect of a post- interpretive complex that opens up broader questions concerning our ability to read him or, indeed any writer, today.

Why do children and young people need art? How do we rationalize the significance of art in society? This anthology is based on research carried out by members of the multidisciplinary research group Art and Young People at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Agder in Kristiansand. The contributing authors argue in favor of research into children’s and young people’s actual experience of art and artistic practices as well as issues within the arts that affect them indirectly. The book’s subtitle indicates a desire to employ a wider understanding of the notions of art and childhood and youth, which is also evident in the themes, content and research approaches it includes. The chapters span both children’s and young people’s interaction with visual art, music, theater within and outside the context of preschool, school and extracurricular programs, and projects that are more on the periphery of these areas. The authors are thus not just interested in the importance of art to children and young people, but to society in general as well. This anthology is aimed at readers across a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, but will also be of interest to all those concerned with art’s place and meaning in schools, in society, and in research itself.

The purpose of the present volume is to complete Bengt Kyhlberg’s thesis Musik i Uppsala under stormaktstiden, 1974 (Music at Uppsala during the Swedish great power period, part 1) using the already finished material he wrote with a view to publish it as part 2 for the university jubilee in 1977, something he did not fulfill. I have taken advantage of his systematized inventories of musical notices available in the Musik- och teaterbiblioteket, Stockholm (Music and theatre library) in the “collection Bengt Kyhlberg”. Several biographies of organists, organ builders and students and the chapter on the construction of the big organ in the cathedral were already finished and have been marked with BK to distinguish Bengt Kyhlberg as the author. I have chosen to emphasize the affinity between Part 1 and Part 2 by continuing the various chapters with their subdivisions. At the same time, Part 2 should be able to stand on its own two feet, which is why the reader receives a brief recapitulation in each section. Part 1 had the dual purpose of showing that the inventory of archives functions as a musicological method and to use the extracted information about music to account for the music in Uppsala until 1660. The method gained recognition and it has since been utilized by other researchers. Due to the fact that the archives related to Uppsala from 1660 onwards are becoming more extensive and complete, the account in Part 2 stands on a firmer ground and becomes more detailed. The number of biographies of music-active persons in Part 1 are 220, while in Part 2 they are 590, of which the most prominent people require a lot of space. It has therefore been found appropriate to assemble the biographies in their own volume.

This open access book describes and reviews the development of the quality control mechanisms and methodologies associated with IEA’s extensive program of educational research. A group of renowned international researchers, directly involved in the design and execution of IEA’s international large-scale assessments (ILSAs), describe the operational and quality control procedures that are employed to address the challenges associated with providing high-quality, comparable data. Throughout the now considerable history of IEA’s international large-scale assessments, establishing the quality of the data has been paramount. Research in the complex multinational context in which IEA studies operate imposes significant burdens and challenges in terms of the methodologies and technologies that have been developed to achieve the stated study goals. The demands of the twin imperatives of validity and reliability must be satisfied in the context of multiple and diverse cultures, languages, orthographies, educational structures, educational histories, and traditions. Readers will learn about IEA’s approach to such challenges, and the methods used to ensure that the quality of the data provided to policymakers and researchers can be trusted. An often neglected area of investigation, namely the consequential validity of ILSAs, is also explored, examining issues related to reporting, dissemination, and impact, including discussion of the limits of interpretation. The final chapters address the question of the influence of ILSAs on policy and reform in education, including a case study from Singapore, a country known for its outstanding levels of achievement, but which nevertheless seeks the means of continual improvement, illustrating best practice use of ILSA data.

Bernd's study shows how Storm's "Novellen" are made purposeful by the operations of a fictional intelligence, haunted by the fear of passing time. The author challenges the traditional belief that Storm's narratives are products of a sentimental mind. No other discussion of Storm's tales, be it analysis of an individual narrative or collective treatment of several or all of them, seeks to interpret them with such specific emphasis upon their fictional, omniscient narrator. This concentration on the fictional narrator also leads into a study of Storm's subjective narrative form.

Modern molecular -omics tools (metagenomics, metaproteomics etc.) have greatly contributed to the rapid advancement of our understanding of microbial diversity and function in the world’s oceans. These tools are now increasingly applied to host-associated environments to describe the symbiotic microbiome and obtain a holistic view of marine host-microbial interactions. Whilst all eukaryotic hosts are likely to benefit from their microbial associates, marine sessile eukaryotes, including macroalgae, seagrasses and various invertebrates (sponges, acidians, corals, hydroids etc), rely in particular on the function of their microbiome. For example, marine sessile eukaryotes are under constant grazing, colonization and fouling pressure from the millions of micro- and macroorganisms in the surrounding seawater. Host-associated microorganisms have been shown to produce secondary metabolites as defense molecules against unwanted colonization or pathogens, thus having an important function in host health and survival. Similarly microbial symbionts of sessile eukaryotes are often essential players in local nutrient cycling thus benefiting both the host and the surrounding ecosystem. Various research fields have contributed to generating knowledge of host-associated systems, including microbiology, biotechnology, molecular biology, ecology, evolution and biotechnology. Through a focus on model marine sessile host systems we believe that new insight into the interactions between host and microbial symbionts will be obtained and important areas of future research will be identified. This research topic includes original research, review and opinion articles that bring together the knowledge from different aspects of biology and highlight advances in our understanding of the diversity and function of the microbiomes on marine sessile hosts.

This book analyzes the experiences of communities facing major challenges relating to resource dependency and community sustainability, drawing on specific examples from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It offers a methodology of self-analysis for communities facing similar challenges, inspired by the ups and downs, local strategies for self-analysis, and collaborative work toward new futures in this Canadian province. Life in hundreds of small coastal settlements revolved around the cod fishery, until the fishery was no more viable. Communities have had to rethink their strengths, reconsider their assets, and imagine potential futures in the wake of events such as colonization and the collapse of the fishing industry. Their experiences are relevant for other parts of the world where formerly central resources are depleted or lose their value, and communities face the need for transition. The capacity to imagine different futures is rooted in the ability to critically consider strengths and weaknesses alike. The authors skillfully dissect and illuminate the conditions that can enable the reconsideration of local assets and narratives, toward a more sustainable future. The variety of these conditions, ranging from social memory to public debate, policy tools and institutional capacity, decision arenas, paths for participation, and distributed strategic leadership, are laid out clearly and illustrated vividly through vignettes written by individuals who participated in the events described. This book culminates in a flexible yet clearly structured method of self-analysis, useful for communities interested in rethinking their strengths and working toward new futures. This book will appeal to students, scholars, and professionals interested in community development and redevelopment and offers a new understanding of the mechanics of local and regional resilience
