Environmental disasters, unequal distribution of resources, viral pandemics, and other types of trans-national disasters, are global crises that cannot be solved within the narrow framework of individual nation-states. They must be addressed through global cooperation and solidarity. Such strategies require intercultural dialog that goes beyond fashionable slogans and can lead to a truly equal exchange of knowledge and ideas. Towards this endeavour, this book by Jana S. Rošker focuses on the traditional Confucian ethic of relationism, which historically spread throughout many regions of East Asia. She examines the specific features of relational ethics and explores its possible contribution to the new global ethics.

An analysis of the political use of the Internet by Chinese dissidents, both in the PRC and abroad, and the counterstrategies that Beijing has employed to prevent or minimize its impact. Although PRC officials have responded to the increased use of the Internet with predominantly traditional measures, they have been relatively successful. No credible challenges to the regime exist at present, despite the introduction of a massive modern telecommunications infrastructure. However, time may be on the side of the regime's opponents.

Image processing combines the disciplines of cameras – image-based sensors – with the processing of the sensor data – the images. From this follows the particular attraction of this field. The conference proceedings at hand of the “Image Processing Forum”, which took place on 21.-22.11.2024 in Karlsruhe as a common event of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation, contain the articles of the contributions.

As Guest Editor, I have the pleasure of sharing a Special Issue of Cancers entitled “Novel Biomarkers in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)”. This collection includes 10 original articles written by internationally recognized experts in this field. Recent progress in molecular characterization, in addition to a better understanding of the tumor immune context, has been dramatically changing the course of NSCLC patient care. At the same time, the advent of targeted therapies and immunotherapies has been driven by the expanding number of biomarkers that help predict sensitivity to these novel agents. In fact, identifying patients that are most likely to benefit from targeted therapy or immunotherapy is essential in order to optimize treatment outcomes while minimizing the risks of overtreatment or undertreatment. For these reasons, currently, all patients with advanced NSCLC require not only accurate staging but also comprehensive molecular profiling, including an assessment of several biomarkers. This Special Issue offers an overview concerning the latest advancements in NSCLC biomarker research, with a focus on technologies that are needed for their detection and use in clinical practice.

This book includes an editorial and 12 research papers on micromixers collected from the Special Issue published in Micromachines. The topics of the papers are focused on the design of micromixers, their fabrication, and their analysis. Some of them proposed novel micromixer designs. Most of them deal with passive micromixers, but two papers report studies on electrokinetic micromixers. Fully three-dimensional (3D) micromixers were investigated in some cases. One of the papers applied optimization techniques to the design of a 3D micromixer. A review paper is also included and reports a review of recently developed passive micromixers and a comparative analysis of 10 typical micromixers.

This chapter takes an interdisciplinary approach to the subject of memorialization and commemoration, protest and populism in relation to the performative enacting and official presentation of difficult history. It analyzes the various actors instrumentalizing the same dark heritage in different ways, by different means, and for different purposes, to draw conclusions about processes of coming to terms with the past ( Vergangenheitsbewältigung ) in relation to the contemporary context of populism and migration.

Written in the thirteenth century, the Icelandic prose sagas, chronicling the lives of kings and commoners, give a dramatic account of the first century after the settlement of Iceland—the period from about 930 to 1050. To some extent these elaborate tales are written versions of traditional sagas passed down by word of mouth. How did they become the long and polished literary works that are still read today? The evolution of the written sagas is commonly regarded as an anomalous phenomenon, distinct from contemporary developments in European literature. In this groundbreaking study, Carol J. Clover challenges this view and relates the rise of imaginative prose in Iceland directly to the rise of imaginative prose on the Continent. Analyzing the narrative structure and composition of the sagas and comparing them with other medieval works, Clover shows that the Icelandic authors, using Continental models, owe the prose form of their writings, as well as some basic narrative strategies, to Latin historiography and to French romance.Written in the thirteenth century, the Icelandic prose sagas, chronicling the lives of kings and commoners, give a dramatic account of the first century after the settlement of Iceland—the period from about 930 to 1050. Standardisation is not a natural form of language change. The aim of such efforts is usually to create a largely uniform standard, often backed by a strong standard language ideology. However, standard languages are sometimes Janus-faced. Additional standard varieties emerge, leading to situations with «double standards» or even «multiple standards». This volume brings together fifteen contributions on «double standards» in twelve languages – and various standard varieties thereof – from three language families, thus providing a novel comparative view on standardisation. Three main aspects of the «double standards» concept are identified: the descriptive vs prescriptive notion of standards, the coexistence of standard varieties in pluricentric or pluriareal settings, and the impact of the cohabitation of several standards in native or foreign language teaching.

A must-have resource, Critical Participatory Action Research in Higher Education brings together real examples, case studies, and learning materials to guide the use of critical action research methodologies. This timely book catalogues efforts to affect change in our own communities, and invites readers to consider how action research has been conducted in U.S. colleges and universities by minoritized and marginalized scholars. In particular, it highlights those projects that have been led by Scholars of Color, queer scholars, disabled scholars, and other racially minoritized scholars, with an explicit aim to raise up and attend to the needs of our communities. An important text for education graduate programs, this book provides a roadmap for community-engaged work, includes framing theory to help new researchers apply this work to college and university settings, and provides rich features such as cases and sample datasets and other tools for use in Research courses. Chapter 2 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.
