Marking 50 years since the publication of noted sexologist Alfred Kinsey’s Sexual Behavior in the Human Female, Feminine Persuasion: Art and Essays on Sexuality celebrates the diverse and multifaceted expressions of women’s sexuality that have emerged since Kinsey’s study heralded a new era. This beautifully illustrated book showcases five centuries of diverse visual interpretations of female sexuality collected by The Kinsey Institute, and includes work by the contemporary artists Mariette Pathy Allen, Ghada Amer, Patty Chang, Judy Chicago, Renee Cox, Judy Dater, Nancy Davidson, Nicole Eisenman, Laura Letinsky, and Frank Yamrus. In addition to more than 45 color and halftone plates, Feminine Persuasion features two scholarly essays that place this wide-ranging work in context. Assessing what the ideal body image of the original Kinsey subjects might have been, June M. Reinisch discusses the ever-changing standards of female beauty, while Jean Robertson, in a survey of the history of feminist art over the past half century, explores the complex dimensions that constitute this work. The catalog for a three-part exhibition to be presented at the Indiana University School of Fine Arts Gallery from February 14 through March 14, 2003, Feminine Persuasion reveals the future toward which Kinsey’s study pointed and gives us a glimpse of the great variety of expressions in the making.

Heroism, music, museums, poetry, drama, love, hunting, war, sacrifice… Pottery is a route into so many subjects. This accessible book offers ready-to-use lesson plans and resources for teaching about the ancient world, and for teaching a range of topics via antiquity. The materials use pottery as a resource for understanding ancient culture. Each lesson plan incorporates a particular vase and an animation made from that vase by the Panoply Vase Animation Project (www.panoply.org.uk): Sappho, Dionysus, Libation, Iris and Heracles. These resources can be used with learners of any age and any level of familiarity with ancient Greek culture. Created by experienced educators all over the world, each lesson plan contains an introduction, a lesson including one of the animations, and an exciting activity to extend the learning experience. In the development of this book, young people have been writing poetry and stories, acting, mapping, drawing and designing, recording music, and planning exhibitions – thinking about knowledge-sharing, budgets, and accessibility. From learning about pottery, through a wide range of topics, to making stop-motion animations, this is an action-packed set of resources to make learning enjoyable, challenging, and memorable.

"Lifestyle in Siberia and the Russian North breaks new ground by exploring the concept of lifestyle from a distinctly anthropological perspective. Showcasing the collective work of ten experienced scholars in the field, the book goes beyond concepts of tradition that have often been the focus of previous research, to explain how political, economic and technological changes in Russia have created a wide range of new possibilities and constraints in the pursuit of different ways of life. Each contribution is drawn from meticulous first-hand field research, and the authors engage with theoretical questions such as whether and how the concept of lifestyle can be extended beyond its conventionally urban, Euro-American context and employed in a markedly different setting. Lifestyle in Siberia and the Russian North builds on the contributors’ clear commitment to diversifying the field and providing a novel and intimate insight into this vast and dynamic region. This book provides inspiring reading for students and teachers of Anthropology, Sociology and Cultural Studies and for anyone interested in Russia and its regions. By providing ethnographic case studies, it is also a useful basis for teaching anthropological methods and concepts, both at graduate and undergraduate level. Rigorous and innovative, it marks an important contribution to the study of Siberia and the Russian North."

Molnik is a hill in the hinterland of Ljubljana in central Slovenia that has been known as an archaeological site for quite some time. Systematic investigations ensued in the 1980s and 1990s, led by Ivan Puš, then curator in the Mestni muzej Ljubljana. They revealed ramparts and habitation terraces on the summit of the hill, as well as flat and tumulus graves on five locations around the summit that date to the Early Iron Age and some finds from later periods.

Food is more than just nutrition. Its preparation, presentation and consumption is a multifold communicative practice which includes the meal's design and its whole field of experience. How is food represented in cookbooks, product packaging or in paintings? How is dining semantically charged? How is the sensuality of eating treated in different cultural contexts? In order to acknowledge the material and media-related aspects of eating as a cultural praxis, experts from media studies, art history, literary studies, philosophy, experimental psychology, anthropology, food studies, cultural studies and design studies share their specific approaches.

The courses of morphology and syntax of the English language as linguistic disciplines studied at university level elaborate on a systematic description of the language, logically categorising the individual items of the language system. In doing so, the traditional structural terminology is employed, describing the phenomena such as complex verb phrases which may comprise modal exponents, i.e. epistemic and deontic modality, progressive and perfective aspects or the category of active vs. passive voice. As in any scientific field, the language used should provide clarity and precision and ambiguities should be avoided. In the field of applied linguistics, however, the requirement of precision in the description of the language categories seems impossible to comply with. This paper discusses the ways the categories of English grammar are defined in standard structural linguistic resources and compares them with publications in the field of applied linguistics at advanced levels. It also contrasts these against the lexical approach introduced by Lewis. The aim of the paper is to highlight the presumed discrepancies between the aforementioned types of resources and help to facilitate the ELT in the field of presenting English grammar.

Desperate times demand optimistic transdisciplinary measures. This volume unites a select group of thinkers who courageously traverse disciplinary boundaries. What brings them together is the least stratified ‘component’: a shared problem. It is a widely recognised that a problem gets the solution it merits. However, only a few acknowledge that a problem seldom neatly fits within a single discipline, nor does it conform to the principle of general equivalence. Handling its irreducibility and non-entailment is a skill possessed by very few. Even fewer take the quasi-causal capacity of what we term the ‘space of technicity’ seriously. The space of technicity, the shared problem of this volume, is a consequence of immanence. Each configuration of surfaces comprising the built environment produces an intangible effect, acting as a quasi-cause. It can be referred to as downward causation or the timely rediscovery of (neo)finalism. In this volume it is approached it from the perspective of axiology. The space of technicity allows us to evade techno-determinism without adopting an anything-goes attitude. That which has become manifest could have individuated differently. However, the potential of a body cannot be discerned before intervening in the causal fabric of agential reality to extract the singular points that make certain outcomes more likely than others, surpassing mere probability. When operating within the ethico-aesthetic paradigm, where sense becomes intricately dependent on sensibility, and vice versa, the volume’s attitude might be said to approximate the Spinozian third kind of knowledge that intuits design (and its space of technicity) beyond mere imagination or reason. This edited volume was inspired by a virtual round table that exhibited a high degree of resonance among the participants. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBiBAgxC5FM
