Mark Erlich wrote With Our Hands: The Story of Carpenters in Massachusetts, his history of the carpentry trade in Massachusetts, during an extraordinarily creative period in U.S. labor studies. The late 1970s saw the National Endowment for the Humanities and its state councils sponsoring ambitious public projects focused on labor unions, working-class culture, and community history. Two years after a diisplay commemorating the centenial of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America appeared in the union's headquarters in Washington DC, Erlich, a journeyman carpenter in Boston’s Local 40, took up a new task: to research and narrate the lively hundred-year history of the carpenters union in Massachusetts, on the job, at the union hall, and in its busiest communities. Erlich built his work around everyday themes of work, family, and community. He documented and interpreted U.S. labor history along new lines, with less emphasis on institutions and more interest in working-class continuity via the union’s own stories. Erlich was determined that the reader would feel these histories as his or her own, achieved through his comprehensive narratives highlighted by vintage photos, historic documents, and excerpts from oral histories. The numerous photos allow glimpses of construction in the making, from building sites at their foundations, to a solitary worker climbing the laminated beams of an arched church roof, to a series of complicated interior angles of the “T" subway extension beneath the streets of Cambridge and Somerville.

Tizian Zumthurm uses the extraordinary hospital of an extraordinary man to produce novel insights into the ordinary practice of biomedicine in colonial Central Africa. His investigation of therapeutic routines in surgery, maternity care, psychiatry, and the treatment of dysentery and leprosy reveals the inco-herent nature of biomedicine – and not just in Africa. Reading rich archival sources against and along the grain, the author combines concepts that appeal to those interested in the history of medicine and colonialism. Through the micro-cosm of the hospital, Zumthurm brings to light the social worlds of Gabonese patients as well as European staff. By refusing to easily categorize colonial medi-cal encounters, the book challenges our understanding of biomedicine as solely domineering or interactive. Readership: People interested in the history of medicine, especially in the colonies. Practitioners of Global Health. Students of Medical History. Historians of Africa. People interested in the work of Albert Schweitzer.

The present work starts from the problem when investigating how the same penalty for the crime of Fraudulent Embezzlement affects the principle of proportionality, so it is necessary to refer to Article 387 of the Penal Code, which reads as follows: The public official or servant who appropriates or uses, in any form, for himself or for another, funds or effects whose collection, administration or custody are entrusted to him by reason of his position, shall be punished with deprivation of liberty for not less than two nor more than eight years. It is an aggravating circumstance if the funds or effects were destined for welfare purposes or social support programs. In these cases, the prison sentence shall be not less than four nor more than ten years. According to the Plenary Agreement No. 4-2005/CJ-116, Plenary Jurisdiction of the Permanent and Transitory Criminal Chambers of the Supreme Court of Justice, the elements of the criminal offense of embezzlement are (i) the existence of a functional relationship, (ii) the collection, administration or custody, (iii) appropriation or use, (iv) the recipient: for himself or for a third party, (v) funds and effects. The result was that when punishing with the same penalty in the crime of Fraudulent Misappropriation in its modality of appropriation and use, despite the differences if we appreciate them from a patrimonial perspective or from the perspective of safeguarding the right of property of the public entity, in the modality of use there is an excess in the penalization, affecting the principle of proportionality, reason for which it should have a different treatment.

Financial Risk Measurement is a challenging task, because both the types of risk and the techniques evolve very quickly. This book collects a number of novel contributions to the measurement of financial risk, which address either non-fully explored risks or risk takers, and does so in a wide variety of empirical contexts.

Focused on the emergence of US President Donald Trump, the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, and the recruitment of Islamic State foreign fighters from Western Muslim communities, this book explores the ways in which the decay and corruption of key social institutions has created a vacuum of intellectual and moral guidance for working people and deprived them of hope and an upward social mobility long considered central to the social contract of Western liberal democracy. Examining the exploitation of this vacuum of leadership and opportunity by new demagogues, the author considers two important yet overlooked dimensions of this new populism: the mobilization of both religion and masculinity. By understanding religion as a dynamic social force that can be mobilized for purposes of social solidarity and by appreciating the sociological arguments that hyper-masculinity is caused by social injury, Roose considers how these key social factors have been particularly important in contributing to the emergence of the new demagogues and their followers. Roose identifies the challenges that this poses for Western liberal democracy and argues that states must look beyond identity politics and exclusively rights-based claims and, instead, consider classical conceptions of citizenship.

The statutory liability for managing directors of limited liability companies (GmbH) and members of the management board of stock corporations (AG) has become very strict due to changes in the framework conditions. However, overly strict liability can tempt directors to engage in risk-averse management. The book therefore deals with the question of whether and within what limits the liability of managing directors and board members can be modified and in particular limited.
