Taking advantage of Russia’s involvement in the conflict with the Ottoman Empire (1787–1792), in the summer of 1788 Gustav III launched a largescale naval operations and led a land offensive from Finland on the almost devoid of troops St. Petersburg. The fleet, however, failed, and the poorly-led Swedish army was stuck in southern Finland. The internal opposition and the rebellion of Finnish separatists (the Anjala Confederation), who sought to surrender this province to the Russian protectorate, were acting paralyzingly. To make matters worse, Sweden was also threatened by Denmark, which, while fulfilling its allied obligations towards Russia, started short-term military operations (August–October 1788). The Swedish-Russian war, which continued for two more years, was limited mainly to naval operations carried out with varying luck and had little impact on the course of operations on the Turkish front. The peace treaty signed in Värälä (August 14, 1790) maintained the existing borders between states (status quo ante bellum), provided for the exchange of prisoners and ensured Sweden with certain economic privileges in Russian ports. Moreover, Catherine II resigned from interfering in internal affairs of Sweden. These events were widely echoed in the Polish press, including the “Pamiętnik”, which are the subject of this article. The publisher and editor of this magazine, the Reverend Piotr Świtkowski, expressed his liking for Sweden, which was fighting against Russia, and for its king Gustav III, whom he placed in the ranks of the most eminent European rulers and indicated as a role model. He praised his Enlightened reforms, especially attempts to strengthen the royal power and struggle with the internal opposition and rebellious officers. At the same time, Świtkowski appreciated the military strength of the enemy – Russia, which Sweden had to face.

Leading Change in a Complex World : Transdisciplinary Perspectives is a transdisciplinary book offering tools for leaders, analysts and students of leadership to navigate in complex and interconnected settings. It proposes an analytical framework based on complexity, relational leadership, and dynamic change. Individual chapters examine these ideas in relation to topical societal, organisational and business challenges such as the changing global security environment, urbanisation, demographic changes, and business-government relations. The leadership roles of heads of states and societal stakeholders are analysed, and versatile leadership and management practices from conflict management to evaluation are introduced. The possibilities for change are examined through global megatrends, shifting global power blocs, changes in consumer practices, as well as those emanating from abstract concepts such as the circular economy.

»I understand that time is running out« - Wenn man den Texten vieler afro-amerikanischer Rapper glauben will, steht das Ende der Welt unmittelbar bevor.

More than 20 years have passed since the downfall of socialist systems. To accelerate transformation processes utmost priority was given to the recognition of property rights, an indispensable requirement for free market economies. Regulators soon came to realize that the success of transformation was conditioned on a more systematic approach towards codified civil law and business law. Numerous comparative law studies on individual Eastern European states have been undertaken, but they fail to portray the dynamic in its full scope. Studies adopting long-term perspectives and offering multi-nation comparisons are particularly rare. In March 2009, a symposium was held at the Hamburg Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Law to address these shortcomings. In this conference volume Christa Jessel-Holst, Rainer Kulms, and Alexander Trunk assemble the contributions by international policy advisors and scholars from Eastern and South Eastern Europe (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia and Ukraine) assessing codification processes in classic civil law fields and company and capital market laws. In spite of comparable transformation problems, the individual processes are moving forward quite disparately, oscillating between 'old' socialist codifications, legislative projects faithful to the acquis communautaire and new codifications with a distinctly autonomous approach. Nonetheless, most transformation states are united in their effort to establish efficient court systems which can handle the acquis without being positivistic. This open access book offers interdisciplinary perspectives on cities shaped by shifting borders and contested identities. Rooted in the study of spatial and social re-appropriation, the book invites readers to rethink the urban experience in Central and Eastern Europe—a region defined by political discontinuities and rich linguistic and ethnic diversity. Historical and Contemporary Challenges for Central and Eastern European Cities engages with the concept of a city to explore attempts to homogenize, categorize, and eliminate differences in history and present day. The essays delve into the interplay between official discourses and marginalized voices that challenge established hierarchies, uncovering both the conflicts and synergies that emerge in multiethnic and multilingual environments. The contributors offer fresh insights into how Central and Eastern European cities navigate their layered identities, fostering a deeper understanding of the region’s dynamic and complex urban narratives. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR).

With the publication of ‘The Responsibility of Intellectuals’ half a century ago, Noam Chomsky burst onto the US political scene as a leading critic of the war in Vietnam. Privilege, he argues, brings with it the responsibility to tell the truth and expose lies, but our intellectual culture only pays lip-service to this ideal. The essay has been described as ‘the single most influential piece of anti-war literature’ of the Vietnam War period. Since then, Chomsky has continued to equip a growing international audience with the facts and arguments needed to understand – and change – our world. According to The New York Times, Chomsky ‘may be the most widely read American voice on foreign policy on the planet today’. This book revisits ‘The Responsibility of Intellectuals’ half a century on. It includes six new essays written to celebrate Chomsky’s famous intervention and explore its relevance in today’s world. Nicholas Allott, Chris Knight, Milan Rai and Neil Smith have studied and written about Chomsky’s thought for many years, while Craig Murray and Jackie Walker describe the personal price they have paid for speaking out. The book finishes with Chomsky’s recollections of the background to the original publication of his essay, followed by extensive commentary from him on its 50th anniversary.
