Habituation describes the progressive decrease of the amplitude or frequency of a motor response to repeated sensory stimulation that is not caused by sensory receptor adaptation or motor fatigue. Habituation can occur in different time scales: habituation within a testing session has been termed short-term habituation, whereas habituation across testing sessions has been termed long-term habituation. Generally, the more spaced the stimuli for inducing habituation are presented (i.e. the slower habituation is induced), the longer it seems to take to recover the behavioural response to its initial magnitude. Habituation is opposed by behavioural sensitization, which is thought to be an independent mechanism that leads to an increased behavioural response, especially if the sensory stimulus is annoying or aversive. Habituation provides an important mechanism for filtering sensory information, as it allows filtering out irrelevant stimuli and thereby focussing on important stimuli, a prerequisite for many cognitive tasks. The importance is demonstrated in mental disorders that are associated with disruptions in habituation, e.g. schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders. The inability to filter out irrelevant information in patients with these disorders strongly correlates with disruptions in higher cognitive functions, such as in different types of memory and attention. Habituation is also considered to be the most basic form of non-associative implicit learning, and it can be observed throughout the animal kingdom. Based on the importance of habituation for cognitive function and therefore for the survival of an animal, it is assumed that habituation mechanisms are highly conserved across species. On the other hand, there is emerging evidence for a multitude of homo- and heterosynaptic mechanisms underlying habituation, depending on the modality of sensory stimulation, the level of sensory information processing where habituation occurs, and the temporal composition of sensory stimulation. Eric Kandel used the sea hare Aplysia in order to study habituation mechanisms of the gill withdrawal reflex; however, the molecular mechanisms remain largely elusive to date. A multitude of different organisms, behaviours, and experimental approaches have been used since in order to study habituation, but still surprisingly little is known about the underlying mechanisms. New insights also come from an unexpected side: in the recent past, groups that have been studying molecular mechanisms underlying short- and long-term synaptic plasticity phenomenons in different parts of the rodent brain are starting to link these plasticity processes to behavioural habituation. The scope of this Frontier Research Topic is to give an overview over the concept of habituation, different animal and behavioural models used for studying habituation mechanisms, as well as the different synaptic and molecular processes suggested to play a role in behavioural habituation through Original Research Articles, Methods, Hypothesis & Theory Articles, and Reviews.

Optimal nutrition is important during pregnancy and lactation for the health of both the mother and infant. Chronic deficiencies of both macronutrients and micronutrients are well established in developing countries. Although in developed countries overconsumption of macronutrients is a major issue, micronutrient deficiencies which occur concomitantly are no less of a concern. Furthermore in developed countries there is also the risk of excessive micronutrient intake from dietary supplements. Micronutrients have a role in fetal and neonatal health and also health in later life. Micronutrient deficiency or toxicity during pregnancy or early life can permanently affect developing tissues, resulting in adverse growth and development of the infant which is associated with chronic diseases in adulthood. An aberrant micronutrient intake during pregnancy or lactation can also have detrimental effect on the mother both in the neonatal period and in later life.

The monograph ('Celtic Legacy in the Toponymy of South-Eastern Alps') offers a close examination of the South-Western Alpine region for Celtic (specifically Gaulish) linguistic remains in the onomastic landscape. Supported by a rigorous methodological apparatus, the investigation sets out to determine which ancient and contemporary geographical names can securely be pronounced to be etymologically Gaulish, focusing on the historical phonology, morphology, word formation, lexis, the geographical distribution of the relevant place-names, and the specific nature of their integration into the pre-existing toponymic landscape. The monograph is a decisive step forward in the recognition of the distributional character of Celtic linguistic remains in the Celtic East. In the wide time-span and the multifarious nature of the often fragmentary and sensitive linguistic material that it is faced with, this work contributes equally importantly to the field of comparative Celtic and Indo-European linguistics (especially with concern to the paleolinguistic remains in the region), as it does to Slovene onomastic studies and the problem of the constitution of early Slavic and early Romance phonological make-up and the interaction between the two.

In 'Dying in Full Detail' Jennifer Malkowski explores digital media's impact on one of documentary film's greatest taboos: the recording of death. Despite technological advances that allow for the easy creation and distribution of death footage, digital media often fail to live up to their promise to reveal the world in greater fidelity. Malkowski analyzes a wide range of death footage, from feature films about the terminally ill (Dying, Silverlake Life, Sick), to surreptitiously recorded suicides (The Bridge), to #BlackLivesMatter YouTube videos and their precursors. Contextualizing these recordings in the long history of attempts to capture the moment of death in American culture, Malkowski shows how digital media are unable to deliver death "in full detail," as its metaphysical truth remains beyond representation.

The "racial and biological regeneration" of the German people was one of the ideological foundations of the Third Reich. The ideas of an organic improvement and of a racial selection of peoples originated in the utopias of eugenics and racism that were developed in the second half of the nineteenth century in Germany and Europe. Eugenics laws were already in place since the early twentieth century in the United States, and later in Switzerland and Scandinavia. However, it was only in the Nazi Germany that racism and eugenics were able to intertwine and be fully realized into a wide and articulated legislative system aimed at the "defense" of the "racial and genetic integrity" of the German people. Statistics, genetics, demographics, anthropology, and medicine contributed, with their true or alleged scientific nature, to give the discriminatory and racist Nazi ideology an aura of objective certainty. The dangerous combination of these factors was systematically and organically implemented within the proposals of the anti-Semitic, "blood and soil" ruralism. These culminated in the "zootechnical" utopia, consisting of a selective breeding of a new Nordic peasant nobility, the future ruling class of the German racial society. The combination of eugenic and racist instances did not remain confined within utopian projects, but found its dramatic fulfillment in the policies of elimination, namely euthanasia and the Shoah.

Recent advances in robot‑assisted urologic surgery have significantly improved the quality of life for patients with prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers by enabling less-invasive procedures, reducing blood loss, and preserving functional outcomes. These developments may also influence diagnostic value; however, their overall impact remains insufficiently evaluated due to limited data and short follow‑up periods. This Special Issue features state‑of‑the‑art studies not only on robot‑assisted urologic surgery but also on laparoscopic and transurethral approaches. It will undoubtedly be of great interest to all urologists.

The reflections contained in the volume fall between the two shores of the stream of life: the socio-cultural and the individual experiencing of old age. The publication deals with migration processes that increasingly affect older people and place old age in the context of global interactions; local, environmental and institutional activities undertaken for the benefit of seniors; issues related to attitudes towards seniors, discrimination based on age; health, quality of life and ecotherapy; an individualized experience of old age in the context of learning and in difficult life situations such as illness or domestic violence. The book’s target audience are educators, sociologists, psychologists, students and doctoral students dealing with gerontological issues, as well as representatives of institutions supporting seniors.
