This collection aims to renew our perspective on adaptation and intermedial processes by thinking of them in terms of codes rather than media. As a result, the notion of transcodification emerges as a crucial tool in order to study the circulation of semiotic and aesthetic resources across disciplines, knowledge systems, and cultures. Defined as the transfer of meaning-making potential from one semiotic domain to another, transcodification both includes and transcends intermediality, thus dramatically expanding the scope and research potential of adaptation and intermedial studies. The essays collected here apply this framework to an incredibly wide variety of objects and issues, from the relationship between art and historiography to the visual culture of finance, from contemporary approaches to ekphrasis to the hidden labor of screenwriters, from modern surveillance to digital comics, from fansubbing to the reception of the classical world in the digital age, from medieval theater to the role of videogames in the “war on terror”. By fostering dialogue between radically different disciplines, the book offers a unique approach to the study of semiotic interrelations across the most diverse aspects of human culture.

Bruno Trentin's theoretical research represents, together with Antonio Gramsci's Notebooks, the most original and important contribution to the culture of the Italian left of the twentieth century. Positioning himself from the point of view of the subordinate worker, he notes that this condition of hetero-direction shapes the entire structure of modern society, deforming its citizenship, and that this condition can only be overcome by setting in motion a process of individual and collective emancipation based on conquest of forms of freedom at work. The transformations that work undergoes after the crisis of Fordism, and the new intertwining of work and knowledge, favor this growth of freedom and creativity in work and re-propose the person in work, previously denied by Taylorism, as the central issue of democratic development.

Born in Japan and trained in Germany, dancer and choreographer Ito Michio (1893–1961) achieved prominence in London before moving to the U.S. in 1916 and building a career as an internationally acclaimed artist. During World War II, Ito was interned for two years, and then repatriated to Japan, where he contributed to imperial war efforts by creating propaganda performances and performing revues for the occupying Allied Forces in Tokyo. Throughout, Ito continually invented stories of voyages made, artists befriended, performances seen, and political activities carried out—stories later dismissed as false. Fantasies of Ito Michio argues that these invented stories, unrealized projects, and questionable political affiliations are as fundamental to Ito’s career as his ‘real’ activities, helping us understand how he sustained himself across experiences of racialization, imperialism, war, and internment. Tara Rodman reveals a narrative of Ito’s life that foregrounds the fabricated and overlooked to highlight his involvement with Japanese artists, such as Yamada Kosaku and Ishii Baku, and global modernist movements. Rodman offers “fantasy” as a rubric for understanding how individuals such as Ito sustain themselves in periods of violent disruption and as a scholarly methodology for engaging the past.

"Open Access as a common and public good in Angola: South-South collaboration" shows the main results achieved in the scope of the cooperation project "Acesso Aberto Angola" and highlights the solidarity between the Global South for the establishment of innovative strategies that allow the scope of new horizons, seeking to accelerate the development and management of scientific knowledge, as well as the transformation potential of science in the search for solutions to problems with which the 21st century has surprised humanity (as is the case of COVID-19), as well as historically unresolved phenomena in countries like Angola, such as the fight against hunger and poverty, desertification and untreated tropical diseases.

This book focuses on Abraham Abulafia’s esoteric thought in relation to Maimonides, Maimonideans, and Islamic thought in the line of Leo Strauss’ theory of the history of philosophy. A survey of Abulafia’s sources leads into an examination of the esoteric meaning on the famous parable of the three rings, as well as Abulafia’s universalistic understanding of the nature of the Bible, the Hebrew language, and the people of Israel.

Science diplomacy has recently been seen as a beacon of hope in tackling the global challenges of international politics. And the Max Planck Society sees itself today as an actor in German science diplomacy. This was not always the case. During the Cold War, despite all efforts to keep its extensive scientific relations separate from the political sphere, the MPG was unable to escape realpolitik. This study explores how the MPG positioned itself in this field, both when it cooperated with the foreign policy of the Federal Republic as well as when it distanced itself from it, and how it combined its roles as a national, European and global science policy actor.

The transmembrane proteins that underlie neural processing are now known at a level of detail that has greatly increased our understanding of these sophisticated molecular machines. Starting with MacKinnon’s seminal structure of a potassium channel, several voltage-gated ion channels and ionotropic receptors have been revealed with atomic resolution (Figure 3.1) [2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. This has been complemented by structures of G-protein coupled receptors, adding opsins and metabotropic receptors to the ever-increasing repertoire of transmembrane proteins elucidated with structural biology [7, 8, 9, 10]. As a consequence of this structural revolution and recent advances in pharmacology, Nature’s molecular machines can now be manipulated with relative ease. This can be done, for instance, via synthetic on-off switches or tuning elements that are attached to the signaling protein of interest to allow for its orthogonal control with non-natural input signals. Amongst these signals, light is particularly useful, since it is unmatched in terms of temporal and spatial precision and techniques for the delivery and control of light are highly developed.

Language plays an essential role both in creating law and in governing its implementation. Providing an accessible and comprehensive introduction to this subject, Language and Law:describes the different registers and genres that make up spoken and written legal language and how they develop over time; analyses real-life examples drawn from court cases from different parts of the world, illustrating the varieties of English used in the courtroom by speakers occupying different roles; addresses the challenges presented to our notions of law and regulation by online communication; discusses the complex role of translation in bilingual and multilingual jurisdictions, including Hong Kong and Canada; and provides readings from key scholars in the discipline, including Lawrence Solan, Peter Goodrich, Marianne Constable, David Mellinkoff, and Chris Heffer. With a wide range of activities throughout, this accessible textbook is essential reading for anyone studying language and law or forensic linguistics.

After the Arab Revolutions in 2011, Tunisia became a symbol of freedom and justice and thus the hope of an entire region. Now, the picture has been reversed: Political freedoms are being curtailed and the economy is in disarray, especially after the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. In the face of expanding inequality, resentment and attacks against ›Others‹ fall on fertile ground. More than ever, mobility becomes contested – shaping spatial movements, social positions and discourses of the self – while young people, in particular, desire to leave the country. The contributors to this volume investigate the meaning of capabilities and aspirations to comprehend the histories of their erosion, but also to reveal alternative ways of imagining futures.

This book reveals the history of discussions regarding university education in Belgium, from the abolishment of the old university of Leuven in 1797 to the promulgation of the laws on higher education in 1890 and 1891. Different issues pass the revue, such as the number and location of the universities, the entrance conditions, the educational programme and methods, the organisation of the examination system, the transformation of the university - from a vocational school to a research institution -, the training of future professors and the admission of women to the university. The general debates are systematically confronted with practical developments within the faculties of arts and medicine. A double compromise characterised both the debates and the practical realisations: between what was generally considered the French model and the German university system, and between the internal and external freedom of the universities.

In German spoken theatre, prompt books used to be written by multiple participants engaging in diverse manuscript practices which continually revise the unfixed literary text within its theatrical context. Based on examples of the vast Hamburg »Theatre-Library« from the 1770s to 1820s, this study proposes a transdisciplinary approach towards handwritten artefacts in modern European theatre. Martin Jörg Schäfer and Alexander Weinstock examine the many-handed creation, handwritten transformation and often decades of use of prompt books in a time increasingly dominated by print. This perspective changes our notion of theatre history around 1800 as well as that of literature and authorship.
