The book explores the concepts of migration, space, memory and identification drawn from the experiences of Istanbulite Romiois/Greeks and through the notion of being minority. The primary problematic examined in this book revolves around the meaning of these concepts, the functions they serve, and how they are related to the identity of minorities who have experienced ruptures like mass migrations. The concepts such as place and memory are addressed through the way in which Istanbulite Romiois/Greeks create meaningful connections around spaces, identity and memory as evidenced by spatial arrangements and how space in general and in Istanbul is specifically rendered sacred.

Most analyses of Violette Leduc’s writing have concentrated on its autobiographical dimension, dealing almost exclusively with her best known volume, La Bâtarde. Violette Leduc: Mothers, Lovers, and Language offers readings of three less familiar first-person narratives — L’Asphyxie, Ravages, and Thérèse et Isabelle - and approaches them not as fragments of a multi-faceted autobiographical corpus, but rather as autonomous works of fiction. This study, which reads Leduc’s narratives from a feminist and psychoanalytic perspective, has a double focus. Part One scrutinizes the intricacies of her treatment of feminine bonding, seeking to bring new insights - inspired inter alia by theorists such as Melanie Klein, Freud and Luce Irigaray to bear on her representations of mother/daughter and lesbian relations. Part Two examines Leduc’s use of language in Thérèse et Isabelle, probing the extent to which this novella contains examples of feminist and/or ‘feminine’ discourse. By exploring Leduc’s lyrical evocation of feminine homosexuality from both a gender-related and a more traditional, formalist standpoint, the writer exposes the limitations of a purely feminist approach to her work. Violette Leduc: Mothers, Lovers, and Language focuses on those elements of Leduc’s writing which look forward, however instinctively, to the complex investigations of gender and language produced by French feminist theorists in recent decades, and illuminates the degree to which it is ‘recuperable’ for feminism. This book, originally published in paperback in 1994 under the ISBN 978-0-901286-41-3, was made Open Access in 2024 as part of the MHRA Revivals programme.

This open access book explores how Italy experienced the crucial period of transition that has come to be known as the ‘Shock of the Global’ during the 1970s. This decade marked a change between the prevailing socio-political and economic structures of the post-war world – the ‘golden age’ of national and Fordist capitalism – and a new horizon which would become much more integrated at a global and transnational level. Drawing from a diverse range of sources, the collection focuses on the perceptions of the crisis and the novelties of the globalization process, as well as the complex process of adjustment that occurred as a result, revealing how events during the 1970s impacted Italy’s collective mentality, its social groups, political parties and culture. Comprising 23 brief chapters, each examining a symbolic event of the decade, this book acts as a starting point for studying the Italian perception of international change. An insightful read for anyone researching modern Italian history, globalization or transnational history, this book demonstrates how Italian culture, society and politics reacted to international stimuli from abroad during the 1970s.

Few professions elicit such ambivalent feelings as criminal defense: If criminal defense lawyers win an innocent man an acquittal, they are admired. If, on the other hand, the criminal defense stands up for the rights of a felon, the recurring question is certainly how to defend him. Until now, there has been no introduction to the practice and craft of criminal defense in Switzerland. The book thus closes a central gap. It is not primarily aimed at experienced professionals, but also and especially at newcomers to the profession, students and an interested broad public. Stephan Bernard's vivid explanations are based on his earlier publications about criminal defense in professional and popular media. However, they are based at least as much on his personal knowledge and experience from over 15 years of broad criminal defense practice.

What is Bushido? What is Budo? How are the culture and traditions of samurai connected with the modern martial arts? Is the ancient wisdom of Japan's feudal warriors truly relevant in the twenty-first century? If so, how can it be accessed? This book addresses these questions, and is a must read not only for martial artists, but also for those who want to know more about the enigmatic Japanese mind and notions of self-identity.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 shattered the sense of security throughout Europe. As a result of the Russian invasion, cooperation between Russia and the West ended. Moreover, Russia's increasingly aggressive foreign policy increases the need for information on contemporary Russia and its future development. This book fulfills the need for more research on Russia’s potential future development and trajectories as it continues to drift into a system crisis which poses significant threats to the security of Europe as a whole. This book aims to bring out a realistic view of contemporary Russia and its future development through nearly 20 articles dealing with strategic information, intelligence and foresight on Russia.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a defining defining event of the 21st century. Global estimates of excess mortality indicate that it has taken fifteen fifteen million lives over 2020-21 (Knutson et al. 2022). It has closed national borders, put whole populations into quarantine and devastated economies. Almost half of workers in low or middle income countries lost a job or business due to the pandemic (Anonymous 2021). The International Monetary Fund has estimated a global loss to the world economy of US$12trillion by the end of 2021 (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation 2020). It led to a rise in rates of extreme poverty for the first firstfirst time in 25 years, with 37 million additional people experiencing this in 2020. The pandemic toll and the cost of measures taken to combat it—both effective effectiveeffectiveeffectiveeffectiveeffective and ineffective—has ineffective—has ineffective—hasineffective—hasineffective—hasineffective—hasineffective—has ineffective—has been paid in human lives, mental and physical suffering, suffering, suffering, suffering, suffering, and economic hardship. The costs will continue to be paid by individuals and societies for decades to come. While the COVID-19 pandemic has been catastrophic, it is not unique. It is not as severe as Spanish influenza, estimated to have killed between 50-100 million people. Recent MERS and SARS epidemics were more deadly to those infected, but less contagious. Future influenza pandemics, perhaps like the hypothetical example above, undoubtedly lie ahead. We await ‘Disease X’, the World Health Organisation’s placeholder name for “a serious international epidemic … caused by a pathogen currently unknown to cause human disease.” In some ways, the COVID-19 pandemic has been a wake up-call. Children who have been home-schooled during the COVID pandemic will almost certainly face another pandemic in their lifetime – one at least as bad—and potentially much worse—than this one.

The furniture, interior designs and buildings by Friedl Dicker and Franz Singer were exceptional in Vienna in the 1920s and 1930s. In this study, based on extensive source research in Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Weimar and Vienna, the work of the studio community is analysed for the first time in the context of the Bauhaus and the Viennese architectural landscape. The volume, which is equipped with numerous previously unpublished illustrations, closes a gap in research on Viennese architectural history and the Bauhaus.

District Leadership for Racial Equity shows how transformative changes can occur across diverse districts when leaders take purposeful action in support of racial equity. Developed as part of the Racial Equity Leadership Network initiative led by Southern Education Foundation, this collection provides an opportunity for leaders to learn from district reform efforts that have reduced disparities and improved outcomes for students of color across unique contexts. The cases presented acknowledge the challenges leaders face, but they also demonstrate that change is possible when leaders build will and capacity to support successful student outcomes. It examines the cases of racial equity leaders across four districts who have developed approaches that create new opportunities and outcomes for students who have been historically marginalized. District Leadership for Racial Equity is an essential resource for emerging leaders, leader practitioners, and policymakers who are committed to reducing disparities and improving outcomes for all students, especially those who are marginalized and underserved in our schools and society. The relationship between 'Islam and the West' has become a central issue in international relations. Recently, an overwhelmingly negative view of sharia has developed in the West, in response to reported events, notably in Iran and Saudi Arabia, to terrorist attacks by Islamists, and also encouraged by certain Western opinion leaders. A range of misconceptions about what sharia actually means and how it relates to national law in Muslim countries, both in theory and practice, has contributed to foreign policies that are confrontational rather than pragmatic. This Research and Policy Note identifies key features, problems and approaches of sharia-based law and links them to foreign policy. This is a vital contribution towards the development of a well-informed, coherent, explicit long-term foreign policy towards the Muslim world.
