This paper shows how Grounded Theory (GT), a method for domain understanding predominantly used in the social sciences, can be useful for the design of a Domain Specific Modelling Language (DSML). Using a pilot study from the smart grid domain, we discuss how GT can be used to systematically derive the abstract syntax of a DSML from domain data. From this, we derive lessons learned from the application of GT, the most relevant being that (1) with GT, one systematically derives an abstract syntax of a DSML, reflecting domain commonalities and variation points, (2) in line with its explorative character, with GT one gains a grounded domain understanding, and the domain goals that a DSML should satisfy, (3) GT does imply a notable time investment, which one needs to weigh against its prospective benefits. Finally we present a concluding outlook in terms of implications for DSML design mechanisms.

The comparative analysis of routing protocols of MANETs in VANETs under different scenarios. The tests were conducted in MATLAB by varying the vehicles densities. The different parameters used to study these analysises are Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), Average End-to-End Delay (E2ED), Normalized Routing Overhead (NRO), and Average Link Duration (ALD).

The objective of this work is to extend the linear analysis of PulsedDigitalOscillators to those topologies having a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) in the feedback loop of the circuit. It will be shown with two specific examples how the overall response of the oscillator can be adjusted to some point by changing the feedback filter, when the resonator presents heavy damping losses. Extensive discrete-time simulations and experimental results obtained with a MEMS cantilever with thermoelectric actuation and piezoresistive position sensing are presented. It will be experimentally shown that the performance of the oscillator is good even below the Nyquist limit.

The selection of an experimental model for silicosis requires a thorough understanding of a number of different pulmonary parameters specific to the animal that is to be used (e.g., clearance time, penetration curves, anatomical differences...), and of the sensitivity of the strains that are to be used. The pulmonary response of three rat strains (i.e., Fisher 344, Sprague Dawley, Wistar) to silica dust were compared using two different exposure methods: intra-tracheal injections and inhalation. The test periods lasted 3 months for injection and 6 and 12 months for inhalation. The histological study of the lung revealed a distinct nodular reaction among Sprague Dawley and Wistar strains. Intra-tracheal injections led to the development of fibrotic nodules among Wistar rats, whereas such silicotic nodules were infrequent among injected Fisher 344 rats, and almost absent when exposure was by inhalation. Sprague Dawley and Fisher 344 rats showed frequent thickening and metaplasia of the alveolar walls near the terminal bronchioles. This tendency was particularly pronounced among rats exposed by inhalation (especially among Fisher 344 rats). Evaluation of wet lung weight (i.e., hydroxyproline, lipid and silica lung contents) reveals an increase in the different parameters for Sprague Dawley rats relative to the other two strains, regardless of the type of exposure. It has thus been concluded that Wistar rats are the best experimental model for silicosis, as their pulmonary reaction is more characteristic than that of the other two strains.

To perform mucociliary clearance, motile cilia covering the surface of the respiratory tract coordinate their beating motions to push mucus out of the upper airways. Ciliated cells cover about half of the available surface, and present disordered but globally correlated beating directions. This architecture is altered as a consequence of several respiratory diseases such as Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia or viral infections that ultimately impair mucociliary clearance. Here, we present multi-physics simulations of a tissue scale model of the airway epithelium. The model reproduces the ciliated layer at individual cilium resolution, with physiological cilium beating shape, density and patchy distribution, in presence of an explicit mucus layer. We show how the spatial alignment of ciliated patches, their beating directions, and typical pathological conditions like cilia loss and immotility affect the beating coordination and the transport of mucus. While spatial disorder has a minor impact on the efficiency of mucociliary clearance, a detrimental effect is caused by the misalignment of the beating directions, cilia loss and immotility, as typical of several diseases. Our results provide a clear picture of the fluid mediated mucociliary clearance process in healthy and pathological conditions.
