Why are some figures hidden from history? Eliza Orme, despite becoming the first woman in Britain to earn a university degree in Law in 1888, leading both a political organization and a labour investigation in 1892, and participating actively in the women’s suffrage movement into the early twentieth century, is one such figure. Framed as a ‘research memoir’, Eliza Orme’s Ambitions fills out earlier scant accounts of this intriguing life, while speculating about why it has been overlooked. Established historian Leslie Howsam shapes the story around her own persistent curiosity in the context of a transformed research landscape, where important letters and explosive newspaper accounts have only recently come to light. These materials show how Orme’s career ambitions brought her into conflict with the male-dominated legal community of her time, while her political ambitions were cut short by disputes with other women activists whose notions of political strategy she repudiated. In public, Orme was a formidable debater for the causes she supported and against opponents whose strategies—even for women’s suffrage—she repudiated. In private, she was generous, warm, and witty, close to friends, family, and her female partner. Howsam’s account of uncovering Orme’s professional and personal trajectory will appeal to academic and non-academic readers interested in the progress and setbacks women experienced in the late-Victorian and Edwardian decades.

Mental and material reconstruction was an ongoing process after World War II, and it still is. This volume combines a detailed treatment of post-war cultural reconstruction in Finnish Lapland – a region on the geographical and historical margins of its nation-state – with comparative case studies of silent post-war memory from other European countries The contributors shed light on key aspects of cultural reconstruction generally: disruptions of national narratives, difficulties of post-war cultural demobilisation, sites of memory, visual narratives of post-war reconstruction, and manifestations of trans-generational experiences of cultural reconstruction. Exploration of the less conspicuous aspects of mental reconstruction reveals various forms of post-war silence and silencing which have halted or hindered different groups of people in their mental return to peace. Rather than focusing on the “executive level” of material reconstruction, the volume turns its gaze towards those who experienced the return to peace in the mental, societal, and historical margins: members of ethnic, religious, and cultural minorities, women, and children. The chapters draw on archival and other original sources, personal memories, autobiographical interpretations, and academic debate. The volume is relevant for scholars and advanced students in the fields of cultural history, art history, and cultural studies.

The restless Riccardo Del Punta was culturally and scientifically resistant to ideological simplifications. This was due to his refined culture, not only in legal matters, which made him a scholar of labor law capable of engaging with the complexity of postmodern social transformations. A jurist of 360 degrees, he questioned law as a legal dimension, a product not only of legislative provisions but of overall cultural and social processes. His scholarly and teaching commitment represents a testamentary legacy in the tradition of titans such as Gino Giugni, Otto Kahn-Freund, Marco Biagi, and Massimo D’Antona.

Genomics technologies revolutionised biomedicine research, but the genome alone is not sufficient to capture biological complexity. Postgenomic methods, typically based on mass spectrometry, comprise the analysis of metabolites, lipids, and proteins and are an essential complement to genomics and transcriptomics. Multidimensional omics is becoming established to provide accurate and comprehensive state descriptions. This book covers the latest methodological developments for, and applications of integrative multi-omics in biomedical research.

This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Guy Standing's immensely influential 2011 book introduced the Precariat as an emerging mass class, characterized by inequality and insecurity. Standing outlined the increasingly global nature of the Precariat as a social phenomenon, especially in the light of the social unrest characterized by the Occupy movements. He outlined the political risks they might pose, and at what might be done to diminish inequality and allow such workers to find a more stable labour identity. His concept and his conclusions have been widely taken up by thinkers from Noam Chomsky to Zygmunt Bauman, by political activists and by policy-makers. This new book takes the debate a stage further, looking in more detail at the kind of progressive politics that might form the vision of a Good Society in which such inequality, and the instability it produces, is reduced. A Precariat Charter discusses how rights - political, civil, social and economic - have been denied to the Precariat, and argues for the importance of redefining our social contract around notions of associational freedom, agency and the commons.

Guter Mann, echter Mann – Wie Männer im Kontext von Arbeitszeitreduktionen Männlichkeit konstruierenThe model of the male breadwinner seems to lose relevance in the course of current transformations in the world of work. Nevertheless, men's reductions in working hours are still to be understood as a non-normative transition in male life courses. Drawing on biographical interviews and discourse documents, this qualitative study is dedicated to the question how men in Germany construct masculinity in the context of reducing working hours.

This paper presents the potential utility of generative artificial intelligence-based light analysis simulation visualization image in the early phase of architectural planning and design. Facilitating the simulation of a building's performance during the early stages of planning and design presents numerous advantages, such as cost savings and enhanced ease of communication among stakeholders. However, the assessment of design performance is typically conducted during the design development phase or post-design completion. Processing a substantial volume of data based on design alternatives demands considerable time and resources, thus constraining the immediate provision of simulation results. This paper aims to utilize generative AI to produce visualization results of simulations with a predefined level of accuracy, with a specific focus on the architectural aspect rather than the physical and engineering functionalities of the simulation. Consequently, the study employs the following approach: 1) Analyze prominent characteristics and elements within light analysis simulation. 2) Based on this analysis, generate high-quality visualization image data additionally through Building Information Modeling (BIM). 3) Construct a dataset by pairing the generated lighting analysis visualization image with prompts. 4) Utilize the established dataset to create an additional learning model for light analysis visualization images. This study is expected to provide immediate and efficient assistance in design decision-making during the early phases by generating visualization images with high accuracy, reflecting prominent qualitative aspects related to light analysis and processing within the simulation
