Prof. Dr. Ludger Kühnhardt, Director at the renowned Center for European Integration Studies (ZEI) at the University of Bonn is presenting a broadly structured study about the first fifty years of European integration, its geopolitical context and academic reflection. His study is based on the two-fold thesis that since a few years, the European Union is going through a process of its Second Founding while simultaneously changing its rationale. The original founding of European integration in 1957 was based on the notion of internal reconciliation among European states and societies. Since the 1990""s European integration has become, increasingly, a political project with implications for the internal structure of its member states and their societies. At the same time, with the end of the Cold War, the rational of European integration has begun to change: European integration is about a new global role of Europe, its contribution to the management of global affairs and its ability to cope with the effects of globalization on Europe. Inside the EU, the Second Founding is about a new contract between political elites and the people of Europe in order to solidify legitimacy and effectiveness for this unique experiment in European history. Prof. Dr. Ludger Kühnhardt has been Director at the Center for European Integration Studies (ZEI) since 1997. He is author of thirty books and edits the volumes of ZEI at Nomos.

Immersive exhibitions have a long history in art. The metaphor of immersion implies a plunge into an all-encompassing environment, where audiences are seemingly transported into alternate virtual realities. From panoramas and 3D cinemas to site-specific installations and performances, a wide variety of mediums, practices, and sites have framed immersive experiences in exhibition contexts. Emerging technologies have also played a significant role in this history, as their capabilities assist in the transformation of “real” space into “virtual” space. This Special Issue of Arts considers the role of new technologies in facilitating immersive art exhibitions. How do histories of technology intersect with histories of immersion and the virtual? How do new technologies influence artistic practices such as installation art, performance, or exhibition design? How does technology—broadly defined—impact how audiences experience and interact with exhibition spaces?

“50 Years of Immunization – Steps Forward” is a compelling volume that chronicles the evolution, achievements, and future directions of one of the most impactful public health initiatives in history—the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI). Launched in 1974, EPI aimed to ensure equitable access to life-saving vaccines for every child, regardless of location or socioeconomic status. Over five decades, this global effort has significantly expanded vaccine coverage, reduced childhood mortality, and evolved into the Essential Programme on Immunization, now encompassing vaccines across the life course—including for adolescents and adults. This Special Issue of the journal Vaccines brings together over 25 articles authored by global experts and public health leaders. It features historical reflections, current analyses, and forward-looking perspectives, spanning global reviews, regional overviews, country case studies, and contributions from low- and middle-income countries. Readers will gain insights into how EPI has driven innovations in vaccine supply chains, digital technologies, safety surveillance, and delivery models. It also highlights the programme’s integration with broader health agendas, advancing disease control, equity, and universal health coverage. Published to mark EPI’s 50th anniversary in 2024, this volume is both a celebration of progress and a call to action—inviting global stakeholders to reflect, learn, and shape the future of immunization.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has upset the geopolitical balance in Europe, with shockwaves hitting the entire world. As a result, today’s world seems to be heading back to a future that looks all too like countless “pasts”. The mindset of “opposing blocs” is returning to Europe, or so it seems. NATO is rediscovering its identity after 30 years of drift. There is a resurgence of “non-aligned” countries, from Turkey to India, to many Latin American governments, as they seek a tricky balance between the major players. The mix of high inflation and energy crisis has taken to the stage again, dragging us back to the 1970s, when rationing and double-digit price rises were commonplace. And the nuclear threat, poverty and perhaps the risk of a less globalised world are rising too. All these returns and revivals are crucial changes that are taking their toll on Europe. The ISPI Report 2023 provides a compass to navigate this changing world.

With the current state of the art angle sensors are used for the operation of permanent magnet synchronous machines in electric and hybrid vehicles. In the present work, a new concept for sensorless control is proposed. The robust operation could be proven with new and further developed sensorless procedures on the machine test bench. The operating range of sensorless control could be significantly increased with the presented methods.
