The book explores India’s role as a normative power, with solid credentials based on a long history of thalassic experience of states of South India. It examines how India has been interpreting international law and rules for the exploitation of living and non-living resources in her way. The book presents an analysis of India’s activities in four key areas of maritime governance and a description of its roles in the Indian Ocean Region. It highlights India as a maritime security and sustainable maritime development model alternative to the Chinese. The volume also showcases a holistic, interdisciplinary picture of India’s maritime policy and thoroughly explains its historical and semiotic background. Further, it discusses India’s endeavours as a new version of the ASEAN+ cooperation model combined with the US hub and spoke system adapted to new time and place conditions. Researchers interested in India, the Indian Ocean, and maritime affairs in general would find the book informative and systematising knowledge about maritime governance in the Indian Ocean Region. The book will be useful to students, researchers, and teachers from the departments of international relations, political science, economics, public policy and administration, and defence studies. It will especially be a useful read for diplomats, policy analysts, think tank members, and those interested in international law of the sea and maritime research centres. It also offers practical insights for those interested in Indian foreign policy, the Indian Ocean Region, and maritime governance in general and scholars researching the role of states in international relations, the instruments of foreign policies of emerging powers in the Global South, and the maritime strategies of developing countries.

This book is about one work: the sculpture I don’t need you anymore, I’m into Carl Andre now (2010/2017) by Ann Cathrin November Høibo. Since completing her studies in 2010, Høibo has become a key figure in contemporary art in Norway. Textiles, in the form of found garments and hand-woven tapestries, are central to her work. With a starting point in a feminist perspective, this book explores the position of textiles as both a material and a tradition in visual art today, as well as how Høibo’s art often evades categorization: In the work in question, the textiles are combined with plastic, metal and a framed collage, such that the result is more a sculpture than a work of textile art. Material and materiality have long been neglected topics in art history, but here, the method is to follow the materials. By examining the various materials from which the sculpture is composed, layers of meaning are revealed. Through the choice of materials, a dialogue arises with Navajo blankets and with artists such as Hannah Ryggen, Else Marie Jakobsen, Carl Andre and Joseph Beuys. In the organization of the materials, the artist references art movements such as minimalism and conceptual art. By delving into this one work, the author shows how a conceptual approach can be effectively combined with a strong sense of materials. On a more general level, the book is also an investigation of how one can write about contemporary artworks that defy established categories.

This edited volume tackles the theoretical, empirical and methodological questions of how novelty can be determined in and through educational ethnographic research. Responding to the increasing need for new and innovative methodological and theoretical foundations for the field, chapters draw on a variety of empirical, critically examined data sets such as observation protocols of pedagogical practice, digital communication and visual representations to bridge the gap between empirical and theoretical approaches, ultimately combining different traditions and discourses within educational ethnography. Collating perspectives and accounts from over 30 authors based in European centers of excellence such as Germany, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Denmark, the book provides an epistemological reflection on what we can understand as ‘new’ in theoretical and methodological research. This volume will be of use to researchers, academics and postgraduate students involved with research methods in education, ethnography and the theory of education more broadly. Those involved with research design, innovation and European research methods will also find the volume of use. The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

The group of high school graduates who did not enlist immediately after graduation but later join the Army has made up a significant and increasing portion of total enlistments. This report presents the results of a survey of 5,000 Army recruits designed to answer questions about why they did not immediately enlist and why they later chose to do so.
