The entry offers a brief examination of J.S. Mill’s views on work by attending especially to the Principles of Political Economy. Mill was greatly concerned with improving the conditions of the working classes yet his aim is to defend a conception of society where work is not the final goal. The culture of work is crucial for the progress of society yet its value is mainly instrumental. Once the stationary state is reached, the interest for wealth would diminish and all sorts of intellectual cultures would prevail allowing people to experiment and progress in the art of life concerning the most desirable ends of humanity.

This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. From neighborhood coalitions organizing against the building of a sport facility for professional sports teams subsidized by public funds, to global campaigns for equity for women in sport, to worldwide bans of apartheid regimes, sites and levels of protest, resistance and activism have been present throughout the history of sport. Contentious forms of collective actions are now ever more present in various forms at the local, the national and the global levels. Sport and Social Movements: From the Local to the Global is the first book-length treatment of the way social movements have intersected and continue to intersect with sport. It traces the history of various social movements associated with labour, women, peace, the environment and rights (civil, racial, disability and sexual), and their relationship to sport and sports mega-events such as the Olympic Games. Based on research conducted by a multinational team of authors that draws on theories of social movements and new social movements, the book includes a valuable chronology of social movements, illustrations of key episodes in the development of the relationships between sport and different social movements and an agenda for future research and scholarship. Written in a clear and comprehensive style it is suitable for all levels of higher education, researchers and the general reader who want to know more about the role that sport has played in the development of social movements and campaigns for social justice.

Beginning and experienced programmers will use this comprehensive guide to persistent memory programming. You will understand how persistent memory brings together several new software/hardware requirements, and offers great promise for better performance and faster application startup times—a huge leap forward in byte-addressable capacity compared with current DRAM offerings. This revolutionary new technology gives applications significant performance and capacity improvements over existing technologies. It requires a new way of thinking and developing, which makes this highly disruptive to the IT/computing industry. The full spectrum of industry sectors that will benefit from this technology include, but are not limited to, in-memory and traditional databases, AI, analytics, HPC, virtualization, and big data. Programming Persistent Memory describes the technology and why it is exciting the industry. It covers the operating system and hardware requirements as well as how to create development environments using emulated or real persistent memory hardware. The book explains fundamental concepts; provides an introduction to persistent memory programming APIs for C, C++, JavaScript, and other languages; discusses RMDA with persistent memory; reviews security features; and presents many examples. Source code and examples that you can run on your own systems are included. What You’ll Learn Understand what persistent memory is, what it does, and the value it brings to the industry Become familiar with the operating system and hardware requirements to use persistent memory Know the fundamentals of persistent memory programming: why it is different from current programming methods, and what developers need to keep in mind when programming for persistence Look at persistent memory application development by example using the Persistent Memory Development Kit (PMDK) Design and optimize data structures for persistent memory Study how real-world applications are modified to leverage persistent memory Utilize the tools available for persistent memory programming, application performance profiling, and debugging Who This Book Is For C, C++, Java, and Python developers, but will also be useful to software, cloud, and hardware architects across a broad spectrum of sectors, including cloud service providers, independent software vendors, high performance compute, artificial intelligence, data analytics, big data, etc.

The chapters in this volume revolve around four fundamental axes corresponding to exercises of peasant resistance in rural areas on both sides of the Atlantic in the Ancien Régime. Particular emphasis is placed on the metropolitan and overseas territories of the Iberian powers (Portugal and the Hispanic Monarchy) which predominate over all others: 1) Slavery and indigenism: In the American territories under the domination of the Iberian powers, these functioned as catalysts for violent (or non-violent) protests against conditions of exploitation and domination, always from Europe to the Americas (and not the reverse); 2) Taxation: One of the most recognizable elements in peasant acts of resistance against rentier institutions (mainly the Church and Nobility) and the modern States themselves. In this regard, the resistance to paying taxes, services and rents—almost always in kind, drawn from the peasantry’s harvests, generally poor and periodically in deficit according to agrarian conditions—was decisive; 3) Land ownership: As the primary means of production for the peasantry, land—which they worked but did not own—was the object of continuous struggles and disputes for full acquisition, as peasants sought to free themselves from oppressive burdens, materialized in agrarian contracts, which were one of the socioeconomic pillars of the unjust estate-based society; and 4) Administration: Against the power structures of the Ancien Régime, especially the Church and the State (in all their institutions and competences, from the Court and Legislation to villages, cities and rural councils at the local administrative level, and in both government and justice), peasants habitually resisted normative discipline, religious orthodoxy, and reforms of cultural behaviors and practices contrary to the interests or morality of these entities.

In this thesis, studies involving ionic liquids (ILs) in the context of IL-transition metal reactions were reported on: the thermochromatic transformation of a cobalt thiocyanate-containing IL, the characterisation of polyhalide ionic liquids, the corrosion of group 11 metals by trihalide ILs, and the comproportionation of copper metal and CuII salts in solution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was the main technique used in all of these studies, but other techniques such as mass spectrometry (MS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were also used.

China’s emergence as a technology leader has become a major factor in geopolitics, transforming global political and economic relationships. In its bid to achieve digital great power status, China’s government has reformed laws and policies, drastically increased investment, and become more assertive internationally. Chinese companies have expanded at home and abroad, but relationships between government and the private sector have sometimes been fractious. This open access book assesses the extent to which the Chinese government has been able to achieve its ambitious digital goals, and more broadly, how this reflects rapidly changing domestic and international political and economic dynamics surrounding China’s rise as a major technology player. This is the first book of its kind, interrogating the complex, dynamic interactions between political, market, and technological factors that structure China’s digital development. It will provide information and intellectual frameworks for scholars, policymakers, and professionals to appreciate the complexity of China’s digital policy landscape, the process of learning and iteration the Party continues to experience as external events impact the policy process, and the impact China’s innovation policies, regulations, and achievements have had, or may have, in the future. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs

How did flamenco—a song and dance form associated with both a despised ethnic minority in Spain and a region frequently derided by Spaniards—become so inexorably tied to the country’s culture? Sandie Holguín focuses on the history of the form and how reactions to the performances transformed from disgust to reverance over the course of two centuries. Holguín brings forth an important interplay between regional nationalists and image makers actively involved in building a tourist industry. Soon they realized flamenco performances could be turned into a folkloric attraction that could stimulate the economy. Tourists and Spaniards alike began to cultivate flamenco as a representation of the country's national identity. This study reveals not only how Spain designed and promoted its own symbol but also how this cultural form took on a life of its own.
