This book provides an important set of critical reflections from a selection of foundational scholars of African media and communication studies through biographical method. The book interrogates the center of mainstream academic scholarship by providing the foundational history and origins of an Africanist conceptual model while highlighting its significance globally. The editors use biographical and life story interviews to critically review the respondents’ interpretations of their key works and arguments in relation to key moments in the field, the continent and globally. Though the book is focussed on recovering pioneering arguments by key thinkers in African media and communication, efforts of individual academics are to be understood in the context of their work with others and within institutions that are networked, locally and globally. By bringing together many of the leading figures of African communication and media studies in a single volume, this book provides a critical corrective to the dearth of knowledge and information about who the key thinkers are and what their key arguments, theories and models for media and communication in African contexts entail. As such, it will be of interest to scholars of media and communications in Africa, and the global south.

The Special Issue aims to provide a complete exploration of the scientific principles related to processing, fermentation/malting, and nutrition of cereal grains. It also describes their physical and chemical characteristics and explains how these properties relate to health and nutritional value of the final grain-based products. Indeed, while grains remain the world’s largest food yield—with more than 2.4 billion metric tons produced annually—consumer demands are on the rise for grain products sustainable from an environmental, social and economic viewpoint, in order to meet the growing demand for healthy and nutritious foods.

Les perspectives féministes connaissent depuis une trentaine d'années un développement considérable dans le champ académique anglo-saxon. Si les analyses en termes de genre sont désormais connues du public français, l'idée de care - mot habituellement traduit par soin, attention, sollicitude - n'a pas trouvé un accueil aussi évident, sans doute en raison de sa dimension provocatrice. En réintégrant dans le champ des activités sociales significatives des pans entiers de l'activité humaine négligés par la théorie sociale et morale, ces approches ébranlent la partition entre des registres habituellement disjoints. Les questions triviales posées par le care - qui s'occupe de quoi, comment ? - font appel à une anthropologie différente comprenant dans un même mouvement la vulnérabilité, la sensibilité, la dépendance. Elles mettent en cause l'universalité de la conception libérale de la justice, installée en position dominante dans le champ de la réflexion politique et morale, et transforment la nature même du questionnement moral. L'irruption récente du Care dans le débat public rendait nécessaire une réédition de l'ouvrage de 2006, qui présentait les principaux textes de référence sur la question. Il y manquait cependant une contribution de la principale théoricienne du care, Carol Gilligan, dont l'œuvre fondamentale, In a Different Voice (1982), était à l'arrière-plan de toutes les réflexions de l'ouvrage. Cette lacune est comblée dans la nouvelle édition.

Indo-European Fire Rituals is a comparative study of Indo-European fire rituals from modern folklore and ethnography in Scandinavia and archaeological material in Europe from the Bronze Age onwards to the Vedic origins of cosmos in India and today’s cremations on open pyres in Hinduism. Exploring Indo-European fire rituals and sacrifices throughout history and fire in its fundamental role in rites and religious practices, this book analyses fire rituals as the unifying structure in time and space in Indo-European cultures from the Bronze Age onwards. It asks the question how and why was fire the ultimate power in culture and cosmology? Fire as an agent and divinity was fundamental in all major sacrifices. In Europe, ritual fires in relation to agriculture and fertility may also explain the enigma of cremation. Cremated remains were ground and used in fertility rituals, and ancestral fires played an essential role in metallurgy and the creation of cosmos. Thus, the role of fire rituals in culture and cosmology enables a unique understanding of historic developmental processes. For students and academics studying Indo-European culture history from the Bronze Age onwards, this book has a broad interdisciplinary audience including archaeology, ethnography, folklore, religious and Indo-European studies. « En voulant écrire sur la révolution de Naples, je me suis laissé entraîner à tracer l’histoire des révolutions de tous les peuples de la terre, et spécialement celle de la France. » Tels sont les propos de Vincenzo Cuoco (1770-1823), historien, juriste et disciple du grand philosophe napolitain, Giambattista Vico, et auteur de l’Essai sur la révolution de Naples (1801), qui devint un classique du Risorgimento, influença Giuseppe Mazzini et fut commenté par tous les ténors de la science politique italienne. Vincenzo Cuoco prêche discrètement l’unité italienne sur une base identitaire et nationale aux plus belles heures de l’empire napoléonien, après léna (1806). En France, seul l’ancien rapporteur du Comité de salut public, Bertrand Barère, s’y intéressa en traduisant l’Essai sous le titre d’Histoire de la révolution de Naples (1807), après les trois tomes d’une fable philosophique écrite en contrepoint, Le Voyage de Platon en Italie. L’Essai, récit vif et enlevé qui pose les événements napolitains de 1799 sous le régime d’une catastrophe annoncée, en appelle à une « science des sciences » des élites. Il postule que l’on peut éduquer afin de faire pièce aux « fictions et aux imaginations des charlatans », des mots d’époque qui ordonnent le récit. Nonobstant, le plus grand mérite du texte est d’être théorie et narration, théorie parce que narration. Le Centre de recherches en histoire du xixe siècle avec le soutien de l’Instituto italiano di Cultura de Paris a réuni en 2001 des historiens, des littéraires et des philosophes italiens et français spécialistes du xviiie siècle et du xixe siècle afin de reprendre une réflexion sur la généalogie et les prolongements des oeuvres de Vincenzo Cuoco jusqu’à La San Felice de Dumas qui s’enchantait de cette histoire. Ces regards, différemment croisés et parfaitement transversaux, enrichissent un comparatisme indispensable à la compréhension des libéralismes et des questions nationales au début du xixe siècle.

Border deaths are a result of dynamics involving diverse actors, and can be interpreted and represented in various ways. Critical voices from civil society (including academia) hold states responsible for making safe journeys impossible for large parts of the world population. Meanwhile, policy-makers argue that border deaths demonstrate the need for restrictive border policies. Statistics are widely (mis)used to support different readings of border deaths. However, the way data is collected, analysed, and disseminated remains largely unquestioned. Similarly, little is known about how bodies are treated, and about the different ways in which the dead - also including the missing and the unidentified - are mourned by familiars and strangers. New concepts and perspectives contribute to highlighting the political nature of border deaths and finding ways to move forward. The chapters of this collection, co-authored by researchers and practitioners, provide the first interdisciplinary overview of this contested field.

The sacred spaces of our cities have become more diverse in recent decades. Alongside established institutions, new voices are claiming participation in the coexistence of religious ideas as well as in architectural expression.

Voltammetry is a very important electrochemical technique that is used to study electrode surface reactions. It helps scientists to understand the behavior of electrochemically active species and the performance of the material being investigated. Voltammetry is commonly used in different fields ranging from energy, sensing, and corrosion applications. It is mainly performed to acquire qualitative information about electrochemical reactions. The interpretation of voltammetric results differs from application to application. In this text, the fundamentals and theories of voltammetry are covered. This book aims at providing interpretations of voltammetric techniques as they are applied in different fields. The various types of voltammetry are covered, and the significance of each type is explained. The topic covered in this book include interpretation of voltammetry in energy, corrosion and sensing applications.

This textbook explores implementation practices for running transformative analog role-playing games, such as transformative leisure, educational, and therapeutic applications. We foreground central considerations for hacking existing games, framing, scaling up existing designs, adapting to the needs of specific populations, creating functional groups, and working with stakeholders. Additionally, the textbook covers many practical considerations when producing and running logistics. Examples include project management, organizational teams, establishing the setting, character writing, location logistics, as well as tech, interaction, and sensory design. We offer suggestions for communication, casting, documentation, guiding player preparation, workshop design, and onsite logistics. Next, the textbook discusses different facilitation roles and responsibilities. We describe several skills associated with good facilitation and recommendations for working in different settings. Additionally, the textbook presents general principles for cultivating safer and more accessible transformational communities surrounding play. We discuss ways to address physical and psychological risks in implementation for both organizers and players, such as injury, psychological overwhelm, and inappropriate behavior in the community. The textbook also features theories connected to the play experience, including motivation, creative agendas, and labor. Then, we present several concepts related to transforming one’s self concept, social identity, relationships with others, and spiritual development through transformative play. We include various practical recommendations for working with preparatory activities, steering, bleed, different types of immersion, interpersonal dynamics, group dynamics, and gathering play experiences through feedback and documentation. The textbook closes with a chapter offering practical advice for playtesting, iteration, and conducting research on transformative play, including study design, ethics, data gathering, and analysis. We conclude with a list of studies offering empirical evidence for the affective, cognitive, and behavioral benefits of these games. We recommend also reading the first book in this series, Transformative Role-playing Game Design, edited by Bowman, Diakolambrianou, and Brind. The aim of this third Eng Special Issue was to bring together experimental and theoretical research relating to engineering science and technology. The topics included in Eng are as follows: electrical, electronic, and information engineering; chemical and materials engineering; energy engineering; mechanical and automotive engineering; industrial and manufacturing engineering; civil and structural engineering; aerospace engineering; biomedical engineering; geotechnical engineering and engineering geology; and ocean and environmental engineering. Many of these topics were selected with the aim of contributing to the circular economy and sustainable development. Therefore, the above aspects are addressed from various points of view and have the support of the field of engineering and its applications.
