This is a book about Strindberg and about the nature of autobiographical writing. In this sensitive and discerning study, Michael Robinson has turned aside from the more traditional biographical approach to Strindberg. Instead he sets out to explore the highly idiosyncratic way in which Strindberg projected himself in language, looking at the problems which this brought in its trail, and laying bare the subterfuges it engendered. He has not limited himself to those works explicitly designated by Strindberg as autobiographical, but ranges widely over the dramas, the narratives and other prose works. (DOI: 10.5334/bab)

Les temps qui se croisent dans cet ouvrage se situent a plusieurs niveaux : ceux des histoires européenne et chinoise, de l'histoire ancienne et de la modernité la plus contemporaine, ceux aussi de l'histoire et de la littérature - notamment en Chine, ou les deux sont difficilement séparables. Ce livre reprend certaines des réflexions produites dans le cadre de l'« Université d'automne», un programme de formation, d'échanges et de recherche associant enseignants, chercheurs et étudiants, européens et chinois, qui se tient depuis plus de cinq ans a Shanghai. Les représentations du temps constituent l'axe privilégie de l'ouvrage, qui met notamment au jour la difficulté a parler le même langage, a s'entendre sur les mots mêmes : le passe est a comprendre entre histoire, mémoire et patrimoine ; l'avenir est fait de peurs et d'espérances, de régimes d'historicité aussi. Firefighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency medical service responders play a critical role in protecting people and property in the event of fires, medical emergencies, terrorist acts, and numerous other emergencies. The authors examine the hazards that responders face and the personal protective technology needed to contend with those hazards. The findings are based on in-depth discussions with 190 members of the emergency responder community and are intended to help define the protective technology needs of responders and develop a comprehensive personal protective technology research agenda.

For decades, NGOs targeting world hunger focused on ensuring that adequate quantities of food were being sent to those in need. In the 1990s, the international food policy community turned its focus to the “hidden hunger” of micronutrient deficiencies, a problem that resulted in two scientific solutions: fortification, the addition of nutrients to processed foods, and biofortification, the modification of crops to produce more nutritious yields. This hidden hunger was presented as a scientific problem to be solved by “experts” and scientifically engineered smart foods rather than through local knowledge, which was deemed unscientific and, hence, irrelevant. In Hidden Hunger, Aya Hirata Kimura explores this recent emphasis on micronutrients and smart foods within the international development community and, in particular, how the voices of women were silenced despite their expertise in food purchasing and preparation.

Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde der Einsatz von Druckrohrleitungen aus Holz als Zuleitung für Wasserkraftanlagen untersucht. Der Einfluss der Holzfeuchte auf relevante Festigkeits- und Steifigkeitseigenschaften von ausgewählten Holzarten wurde experimentell bestimmt. Mit Hilfe eines Rechenmodells wurden Bemessungstabellen erstellt, mit denen eine schnelle Bemessung von Druckrohrleitungen aus Holz durchgeführt werden kann. Zusätzlich wurden instationäre Strömungsvorgänge genauer untersucht.

Jean-Marc Callois proposes to understand the mechanisms of territorial development, to identify the local potential of bioresources and the articulation between uses, to activate the various public policy tools, to articulate the scales of governance and finally to conceive the economic system as an ecosystem. Living resources are a major element in the response to the environmental crisis. Admittedly, photosynthesis has a much lower energy yield than photovoltaics, but it has the advantage of not requiring increasingly rare minerals whose extraction is polluting. Bioresources have considerable potential for creating activities and jobs, well beyond current food and energy uses. They are also a means of revitalising many rural areas in decline. The book sets out a methodological framework for implementing a territorial development strategy based on bioresources. It brings together the various theoretical tools needed to understand the economic mechanisms underlying territorial development and details their practical application. It is also a plea for greater consideration of the bioeconomy in public policies and in economic thinking. This book is primarily intended for regional development practitioners (local authorities, development agencies, consultants, etc.) who wish to implement such an approach to development.

The design work carried out on the city of ​​Portici represented, for the students in the last year of the Master’s Program in Architecture 5UE, an important experiment, from a design and professional point of view, towards the development of an approach aimed at finding an adequate and factual response to the multiple needs posed by the reality of the context in which it operates. The book collects the results of the work carried out during the 2019-2020 academic year, highlighting the multiplicity of aspects and design topics addressed, as well as the variety of the proposed solutions. The structure of the book reflects this experimental approach, starting with the exploration of some preliminary topics and methods, examined in the “Essays” section; continuing through the study of the “collaborative mapping” and the interaction with the environment and with the people who live in these places; finally, working on assembling and defining a “synthesis” of data and investigations through the design proposals, described in the “Projects” section. To try to solve the existing critical issues, yet to enhance the potential and the various heritage of the city of Portici, the project proposals were built grafting into the existing, not oriented towards the definition of a closed form and a predetermined function. On the contrary, it has implied to work on the idea of an open form, which reuses and recycles what already exists, including multiple possibilities of use and continuously changing its perimeter, extending and incorporating urban pieces of different nature. Scenarios of new possible meanings and new urban transformations are, therefore, the result of this work, made up of different levels of study and research related to the overall idea of ​​Portici as a “City-Park”.

Les vers fescennins du barde (la partie licencieuse et illégitime de l'œuvre), longtemps en rupture avec l'horizon d'attente à la fois de la critique et des lecteurs, et cachés au public jusqu'en 1959, font l'objet d'une étude approfondie, afin de compléter le portrait esquissé jadis, en 1893, par le poète et universitaire français Auguste Angellier.

‘Will’ descends, etymologically, from voluntas. However, in the meaning of voluntasit is no longer possible to grasp the terminological plurivocity present in the Greek language. Consequently, the theory of action, which Aristotle and Greek thought in general had extensively dealt with, in the Roman context has adapted to a simplified conceptual framework. The essays collected here have allowed us to focus on a brand new articulated paradigm. Within it, we find a renewed concept of ‘will’: the voluntas that is explained in the modern interpretation of the ‘voluntary act’, and ‘voluntarism’ tout-court.

This book presents a Facebook study on members of the Cusp Generation, or those born before the “great digital divide” of 1995. This delineation allows for a discussion on the possible socio-cultural implications of Facebook use for people of all ages. Members of the Cusp Generation are in a unique position as “part digital natives” to easily acquire and use new media technologies, while being more critically aware of the personal, social, and cultural effects that may arise from them thanks to having some memory of the pre-digital era. Memory matters. It matters because memory brings the past into the present, and opens it up to the future. But it also matters literally, because memory is mediated materially. Materiality is the stuff of memory. Meaningful objects that we love (or hate) function not only as aide-mémoire but are integral to memory. Drawing on previous scholarship on the interrelation of memory and materiality, this book applies recent theories of new materialism to explore the material dimension of memory in art and popular culture. The book’s underlying premise is twofold: on the one hand, memory is performed, mediated, and stored through the material world that surrounds us; on the other hand, inanimate objects and things also have agency on their own, which affects practices of memory, as well as forgetting.
