Questo volume contiene gli atti della giornata di studi dedicata a Il restauro come atto critico: Venezia e il suo territorio, organizzata a Ca’ Dolfin il 27 marzo 2012 come momento di collaborazione e confronto tra Università e Soprintendenze. La consapevolezza che il restauro sia sempre un atto critico dovrebbe essere il punto di convergenza tra storici dell’arte, restauratori, esperti scientifici e quanti sono coinvolti nella tutela del patrimonio. I contributi qui raccolti, pur con cronologie e prospettive diverse, confermano questo assunto e ne evidenziano, attraverso casi concreti, le conseguenze sul piano della storia dell’arte come su quello della teoria del restauro.

This pioneering study shows what brought Yiddish-speaking Jewish intelligentsia to the Communist movement in the interwar years. They believed that Communism is not only a way to solve the Jewish problem but also to save the Yiddish culture. Biography of the central protagonist of the book, a Yiddish writer Dovid (David) Sfard, is just a pretext to show a full range of Jewish Communist activists (such as Hersh Smolar, Bernard Mark, Szymon Zachariasz, etc.) and their life choices. This relatively small milieu influenced and controlled the Jewish life in post-war Poland until the anti-Semitic campaign of 1968. Their lives, reconstructed thanks to sources in several languages, make up a panorama of Jewish Communist experience in 20th-century Eastern Europe.

The subject of this work is the morphosyntactic analysis of a corpus of Latin documentary papers which were written in the centre and the north of the Italian peninsula between the 7th and the 8th century. The study focuses on the competition, in the nominal phrase, between synthetic and analytical encoding of the dependent name, which is the result of the grammaticalization process of the phrase starting by the preposition “de”, which in the Romance phase replaced the genitive case. This change is interpreted on a semantic basis, making use of the functional domain of possession. The volume also analyses nominal morphology which, although characterized by polymorphism and inconsistency, manifests phenomena such as the levelling of random oppositions and the reconstruction of inflectional paradigms, two inverse processes which find their cause in the principle of animacy.

Książka zawiera w sobie dwanaście różnych spojrzeń na współczesność oraz współczesne losy obrazów i obrazowości. Układ książki na swój sposób powtarza skomplikowane trajektorie obrazów w kulturze współczesnej. Nie próbuje ujmować zagadnień chronologicznie ani w porządku dyktowanym wykorzystywanymi mediami, raczej podporządkowuje się niejednorodności pola badań.

The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

“We have made great progress, but we are still vulnerable and our common commitment to fight global health challenges is not yet strong enough. Despite our knowledge, despite new technologies, without concentrated and global efforts we are limited in our success. Today we see it clearly.” The sequencing of the human genome at the beginning of this millennium marked a new era in biomedicine. Nanotechnology and robotics have created innovative tools and powerful diagnostic techniques. Major therapeutic advances have enabled us to control HIV, and more tailor-made therapies are being implemented to treat cancer. Nonetheless huge challenges remain, not only in the field of cancer, but also with respect to neurodegenerative and other diseases. At the same time, international travel and mobility, as well as globalised trade, are affecting our living conditions and promoting the spread of infectious diseases and new viruses, like the COVID-19 coronavirus, all over the world. The Croatian physician and scientist Ivan Đikić analyses the challenges of contemporary medical research, the emerging threats, like pandemics, and the role played by health systems. This is the twelfth essay in the Big Ideas series created by the European Investment Bank.

Comment les bibliothèques participent-elles à la construction de la pratique de lecture numérique de leurs usagers ? Cette enquête qualitative menée en 2015 dans la région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes recueille les récits des professionnels de l’information et des usagers inscrits : à la question initiale posée par ce support nomade, se superposent les interrogations sur les contenus nomades quand, en fin de compte, il semble que ce soit l’acte lui-même de lire que l’on souhaite toujours plus mobile, extensible, intégré dans les dimensions de nos vies, fussent-elles numériques.

This detailed study of eighty European journeys examines the everyday spatial concerns of nineteenth-century travelers, with a focus on travelers from the Netherlands and North Sea region. From common soldiers in revolutionary Belgium to guests of the tsars in Russia, many of their travel accounts are here examined for the first time. Chapters analyze the different meanings of the home and homeliness; travelers’ desires for socializing but equally their intricate privacy norms; their intense attachment to cleanliness, order, space, and light; and the discomforts of cold, hot, wet, hard, and cramped spaces. Author Anna P.H. Geurts details what spatial characteristics travelers valued, what measures they took to ensure them, and what sensations, emotions, and thoughts this resulted in. Geurts’s careful attention to gender, class, and individual experience turns existing conceptions of industrial modernity on their head. From Napoleonic stagecoaches and sailing-boats to the steam-powered journeys of the belle époque, the continuities in travel experiences are surprising, as are the commonalities between travelers of different social classes and genders. Significant shifts in their spatial micropolitics should be sought less in the world of administration and industrial machinery, and more in travelers’ increasingly flexible and egalitarian mindset and changing economic relations. This book will be of value to students and researchers of cultural history as well as contemporary planning and design.

Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are set to become the main computers that virtually all people will own and carry with them at all times. And yet,mobile devices are not yet used for all computing tasks. A project at Microsoft Research was created to answer a simple question: “It is possible to create interesting apps directly on a smartphone or tablet, without using a separate PC or a keyboard?” The result is TouchDevelop, a programming environment that runs on all modern mobile devices such as Windows Phone, iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, and also on PCs and Macs. This book walks you through all of the screens of the TouchDevelop app, and it points out similarities and differences of the TouchDevelop language compared to other programming languages. For users, the book can serve as a handyreference next to the phone. The book systematically addresses all programming language constructs, starting from the very basic constructs such as variables and loops. The book also explores many of the phone sensors and data sources which make creating apps for mobile devices so rewarding. If you are new to programming with TouchDevelop, or if you have not yet worked on touchscreen devices, we suggest that you read the book starting from Chapter 1. If you are already familiar with the basic paradigm of the TouchDevelop programming environment, then feel free to jump ahead to the later chapters that address particular topic areas. This book is written from the perspective of a person developing their code using a web browser. The TouchDevelop Web App runs in many modern browsers on many different devices including smartphones and tablets, Macs, PC. All screenshots and navigation instructions refer to the TouchDevelop Web App running in a browser. For Windows Phone, there is a dedicated TouchDevelop app in the Windows Phone Store which gives access to many more sensors and data sources. Starting with the TouchDevelop app v3.0 for Windows Phone 8, the phone app will share the same look and navigation structure and all features of the Web App.

Podnebje in turizem sta običajno tesno povezana. Smučanje brez snega in nizkih temperatur ni možno, če omenimo samo najbolj neposredno povezavo. Zaradi tega je bilo v zadnjih letih opravljenih veliko raziskav o vplivu podnebnih sprememb na turizem v gorskih območjih. In o tem govori knjiga ClimAlpTour. Podnebne spremembe in njihov vpliv na turizem v Alpah, ki je nastala v projektu z istim imenom iz programa Evropskega teritorialnega sodelovanja, Alpski prostor, ter izšla v slovenskem, angleškem, italijanskem, nemškem in francoskem jeziku. Ponuja širok spekter vsebin: od pričakovanih učinkov dvigovanja temperature na turizem, vpliva teh sprememb na razvoj Alp do rešitev oziroma prilagoditvenih strategij. Glavnina knjige obravnava konkretna območja oziroma turistična središča (v celoti 22, slovenski sta dve: Zgornje Posočje in Kranjska Gora) tako s prevladujočim zimskim kot tudi poletnim in celoletnim turizmom: njihove temeljne značilnosti, izzive in priložnosti ter prilagoditvene strategije. Knjiga se sklene s priporočili in smernicami za turistično industrijo in nosilci odločitev.

La liaison de la nourriture, de la boisson et du spectaculaire caractérise le théâtre depuis l’Antiquité. Le présent ouvrage questionne cette relation à partir de la naissance officielle de la mise en scène en France, à la fin du XIXe siècle et jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Le point de départ et de repère est la France, pays qui a vu naître et a accueilli toutes les grandes évolutions du théâtre moderne et de la gastronomie. Au fur et à mesure, le champ géographique s’élargit pour inclure d’autres pays européens (Russie, Grande-Bretagne, Suède, Allemagne, Suisse, Italie, Espagne, Grèce) ainsi que les pays de l’Amérique du Sud (Venezuela, Colombie) et les États-Unis. Des pièces, des mises en scène et des performances, qui mettent en avant l’alimentation et la cuisine en tant que pratique d’art ou en tant que lieu, sont réunies et analysées.

This Special Issue highlights the valuable contributions to wireless and mobile communication technologies, mobile edge computing, and blockchain using modern artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques. The applications of machine learning in wireless and mobile communication networks have been receiving increasing attention, especially in the new era of big data and the Internet of Things (IoT), where data mining and data analysis technologies are effective approaches to solving wireless system issues. Artificial intelligence is one of the leading technologies in 5G, beyond 5G, and future 6G networks. Intelligence is playing a crucial role in unlocking the full potential of the 5G networks and the future 6G mobile wireless networks by leveraging universal infrastructure, open network architectures, software-defined networking, network function virtualization, multi-access edge compu-ting, vehicular networks, etc. The implementation of blockchain and mobile edge computing has become a significant part of new wireless and mobile communication networks, helping to perform computations as close to IoT devices as possible.

Le culte rendu aux saints, ces « morts très spéciaux », représente l’une des pratiques sociales et religieuses les plus singulières du Moyen Âge. Au cœur des récits hagiographiques qui leur sont consacrés figurent bien sûr les Vies de saints, dont le sens et les enjeux sont bien plus larges que la simple finalité liturgique ou cultuelle qu’elles mettent généralement en avant. D’autant plus que, jusqu’au xiie siècle au moins, la biographie du saint et sa personnalité importent relativement peu tant le poids des modèles structure les récits. On ne saurait donc s’étonner de ce que la figure « historique » de Julien du Mans, dont la sainteté et le culte, de l’époque carolingienne à l’âge gothique, sont l’objet de cet ouvrage, demeure évanescente, pour ne pas dire insaisissable. Pourtant Julien finit par être considéré comme le premier évêque du Mans et un disciple des Apôtres, et par devenir le principal titulaire de l’église cathédrale et le patron du diocèse du Mans. L’intérêt de l’étude réside donc ici : dans l’ensemble des pratiques et des représentations que la fabrique légendaire met en jeu, à l’articulation de l’histoire de l’institution ecclésiale, de l’histoire culturelle et de l’histoire des pouvoirs. Pour mieux fonder la démonstration l’ouvrage propose également une édition scientifique des principaux textes hagiographiques et liturgiques concernant saint Julien.

As the costs and resources of delivering health services have increased over the years, the importance of evaluating health services and interventions has become essential. An evaluation provides a systematic process of assessing the efficacy and efficiency of health services, including an assessment of their impact on beneficiaries, whether it be individuals or communities. Evaluation in the health sector includes the evaluation of burden disease where human and economic costs resulting from poor health are measured.In this book, various evaluation studies are detailed, providing an excellent resource for both evaluation practitioners and academics alike.
