Artificial Intelligence (AI) has unfolded various dimensions since its inception. Its application in academic work has raised concerns in the academic sphere, as improper use by students can pose various risks to their future professional development. The objective was to identify how and how often students from four private universities are utilizing artificial intelligence programs for academic tasks. This was a descriptive, quantitative, non-experimental, and cross-sectional study. The population and sample consisted of students enrolled in research courses at four universities in Peru, totaling 173 students who were surveyed through an online questionnaire. The main findings revealed that 74% of the sample had used some form of AI for academic tasks. A majority of the participants (64,7%) were female, and a significant number were pursuing undergraduate degrees (42,8%) and graduation courses (42,2%). The most notable use of AI was the automation of tasks or academic work (66,4%), and the perceived major benefit of using AI was increased efficiency in content generation (39,8%). A high percentage of university students were found to incorporate AI in their academic work, with primary uses being automation, concept generation, assistance in writing and structuring, and the use of AI as a primary source of information.

Brain derived neurotophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB) signaling has been extensively studied for its roles in the central nervous system (CNS) ranging from cell survival, axonal and dendritic growth and synapse formation. Intracellular signaling pathways triggered by BDNF activate gene transcription, translation, post-translational functions, trafficking of key synaptic proteins, and synaptic release mechanism. BDNF-TrkB signaling mediates long-lasting activity-modulated synaptic changes on excitatory and inhibitory neurons and plays significant roles in circuit development and modulation. Furthermore, this pathway is critical for learning, memory, sensory processing and other cognitive functions, and is implicated in neurological and psychiatric diseases. In addition to BDNF, more recent studies have identified new “growth” factors that play important roles in the development, maturation and maintenance and modulation of synaptic function. However, details of the cytoplamic signaling systems downstream of these synaptogenic factors are often less understood than conventional neurotophin signaling. This e-Book has collected original studies and review articles that present cellular and molecular mechanisms concerning activity-dependent synapse formation and their implications for behavior and brain disorders. It is our hope that readers will perceive this volume as a showcase for diversity and complexity of synaptogenic growth factors, and will stimulate further studies in this field.

Olav Duun (1876–1939) was regarded as one of the greatest authors of his time, internationally as well. Later he fell into the shadow of other great writers of his generation, Sigrid Undset and Knut Hamsun. Yet there are good reasons to bring his authorship back into the light, as the 13 articles in this book clearly show. Duun, for example, has much to say about the relationship between humans and nature—a theme discussed in contributions by Einar Vannebo, Renate Nordnes, and Grethe Fatima Syéd. Perhaps the short stories—as John Brumo and Audhild Norendal write about—can be a way into his authorship? The book’s contributions also touch on themes such as old age (Aasta Marie Bjorvand Bjørkøy), existentialism (Sveinung Nordstoga), literature’s potential for teaching history (Heming Gujord), Duun’s place in the canon (Erik Bjerck Hagen), and changing norms for children’s literature (Hallvard Kjelen). With the breadth of approaches and perspectives the authors bring forward, there is reason to hope for continued and increased interest in Duun’s authorship—both within academia, in school, and among the broader reading public. Duun’s texts challenge us in ever new ways, as literature of great stature can do, and the articles in this book show—together and individually—that we still have something to learn from Duun about what it means to be human in the world.

Marine natural products are characterized by high chemical diversity, biochemical specificity, and other molecular properties that make them favorable as lead structures for drug discovery. In this field, one of the main problems is often the reduced natural availability of isolated substances, which can complicate both the structural characterization and possible future developments. For these reasons, the study of bioactive marine metabolites should rely on the development of chemical synthesis and synthetic strategies aimed at the preparation of pure compounds and analogs both for structural confirmation and/or for the large-scale preparation necessary for future applications. Moreover, natural products can be a crucial starting point for the preparation of molecules structurally inspired by the latter, opening the path to new classes of biologically active compounds with pharmacological potential. This book collects original research articles regarding synthetic strategies for secondary marine metabolites and/or analogs that favor applications of these molecules and/or solve structural challenges common in the field of natural substances.
