Due to the increase in population worldwide, there is an urgent need to estimate natural hazards more efficiently. A crucial aspect of this challenging task is the mitigation of the risk of earthquakes. The occurrence of earthquakes is an inherently complex phenomenon that is manifested in the nonlinear dynamics that form the process of earthquake generation. Earthquakes interact over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales to generate new events; meanwhile, the coupling of stress interactions with other aseismic processes, such as fluid flow, poroelastic effects, and aseismic slip, may further reduce the frictional strength of faults, triggering more earthquakes. As such, earthquakes are considered a critical phenomenon, exhibiting nonlinearity, self-organized criticality, scaling, clustering, fractal/multifractal structures, and long-range interactions. The analysis of earthquake phenomena in the light of complexity theory is thus ubiquitous, and mathematical tools arising from statistical physics offer a consistent theoretical framework with which to better understand the occurrence of earthquakes. With the significant generation of new data in recent years, these modern tools may provide novel and substantial insights into the physics of earthquakes, with the ultimate aim being to mitigate the risk of earthquakes more effectively.

Eschatology and mission relate to some of the most important theological aspects. It is obvious that, presently, the theological discussion about eschatology raises new questions concerning its place regarding the implications for mission. Without a clear understanding of eschatology, missiology is unable to answer the questions of the world in which it finds itself at the moment.

Although many other models of concurrent and distributed systems have been de- veloped since the introduction in 1964 Petri nets are still an essential model for concurrent systems with respect to both the theory and the applications. The main attraction of Petri nets is the way in which the basic aspects of concurrent systems are captured both conceptually and mathematically. The intuitively appealing graphical notation makes Petri nets the model of choice in many applications. The natural way in which Petri nets allow one to formally capture many of the basic notions and issues of concurrent systems has contributed greatly to the development of a rich theory of concurrent systems based on Petri nets. This book brings together reputable researchers from all over the world in order to provide a comprehensive coverage of advanced and modern topics not yet reflected by other books. The book consists of 23 chapters written by 53 authors from 12 different countries.

The intervention addresses three metaphysical and fantastical exemplary works from the twentieth century - Ebdòmero, La partenza dell’Argonauta, Il Mar delle Blatte – in which the theme of travel finds expression through different textual models. In the first case, De Chirico uses the archetypical model of Ulysses’ journey against a background of fantastic metaphysical imagery. In the second Savinio creates a parodistic rewriting of the Argonautiche by Apollonio Rodio – the mythical trip par excellence, while in the third (Il mar delle blatte) Landolfi recalls the characters of Salgari’s adventure novels. All three texts represent imaginary travels towards an unreachable elsewhere, symbolically represented by a paradisiacal Island, lost and dreamt of also by the sailor Pessoa.

This volume of VGAR critically analyzes video game art as a means of survival. Though “survival strategy” exists as a defined gaming genre, all video games—as unique, participatory artworks—model both individual and collaborative means of survival through play. Video games offer opportunities to navigate both historical and fictional conflicts, traverse landscapes devastated by climate change or nuclear holocaust, and manage the limited resources of individuals or even whole civilizations on earth and beyond. They offer players a dizzying array of dystopian scenarios in which to build and invent, cooperate with others (through other players, NPCs, or AI) to survive another day. Contributors show how video games focus attention, hone visuospatial skills, and shape cognitive control and physical reflexes and thus have the power to participate in the larger context of radical, activist artworks that challenge destructive hegemonic structures as methods of human conditioning, coping, and creating. Contributions by Anna Anthropy , Andrew Bailey, Michael Anthony DeAnda, Luisa Salvador Dias, Tiffany Funk, Elizabeth LaPensée, Treva Michelle Legassie, Michael Paramo, and Martin Zeilinger.

Polish-Hungarian contacts have a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, which was present in Polish historiography of the early modern times. Knowledge on this subject was present in the consciousness of the Old Polish society. About it was described in medieval chronicles and historical writings of the Renaissance. In the 18th century, Old Polish historiography changed under the influence of the Enlightenment. The historiography was also influenced by the experiences related to the partitions of Poland. The aim of the article is to how the descriptions of Polish-Hungarian relations evolved. Particular attention is paid to the description of the relations between the elites of both countries. Historiographic works and geographical compendiums were used to conduct the study.

Sarah Carter reveals the pioneering efforts of the government, legal, and religious authorities to impose the “one man, one woman”model of marriage upon Mormons and Aboriginal people in Western Canada. This lucidly written, richly researched book revises what we know about marriage and the gendered politics of late 19th century reform, shifts our understanding of Aboriginal history during that time, and brings together the fields of Indigenous and migrant history in new and important ways.

Star Carr is one of the most important Mesolithic sites in Europe. It was discovered in the late 1940s by John Moore and then excavated by Grahame Clark from 1949-1951, becoming famous in the archaeological world for the wealth of rare organic remains uncovered including barbed antler points and antler headdresses. However, since the original excavations there has been much debate about how the site was used: was it a residential base camp, a hunting camp or even a ritual site? From 2003-2015, excavations directed by Conneller, Milner and Taylor aimed to answer these questions. This work has demonstrated that the site is much larger and more complex than ever imagined and was in use for around 800 years. The excavations show that Mesolithic groups were highly invested in this place: there is evidence for a number of structures on the dryland (the oldest evidence for ‘houses’ in Britain), three large wooden platforms along the edge of the lake, and the deposition of rare artefacts into the lake edge, including more antler headdresses and a unique, engraved shale pendant. People continued to occupy the site despite changes in climate over this period. The main results of our work are contained in two volumes: the first provides an interpretation of the site, and the second provides detail on specific areas of research.
