This reprint is devoted to the oral microbe Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and its associated distinctive form of rapidly destructive periodontitis that results in early tooth loss, predominantly occurring in adolescents and children of African descent. Three chapters are related to the biological and clinical characteristics of the disease, while six chapters are devoted genetic features uniquely suited for local disruption of the host’s homeostatic balance. The final two chapters illustrate how a deep molecular understanding of A. actinomycetemcomitans has been used to develop therapies for diseases such as staphylococcal infections and leukemias. The reprint illustrates A. actinomycetemcomitans’s 1) highly adaptable nature, 2) its influence on its microbial cohorts, 3) its modulation of local host responsiveness, and 4) its relationship to tissue damage, microbial survival tactics, and metabolic and competitive ecological strategies. These microbe-related processes can be applied to other infectious diseases. The Damage–Response Framework is illustrated as the most appropriate way to consider this microbe, its effect on its host, and the relationship of time to the extent of damage or repair.

Over the last few years, we have witnessed increasing efforts dedicated to the scientific investigation and characteristics of trace elements. Especially in the field of human and animal nutrition, trace elements display a considerably attractive issue for research because they play an essential role in the nutrition of both animals and humans. Aquatic environments contaminated with trace elements are an emerging research area due to the toxicity, abundance, and environmental persistence of trace elements. Accumulation of heavy metals as a class of trace elements in various environments, and the subsequent transition of these elements into the food and feed chain, severely affects human health. The determination of type and concentration of trace elements is regarded as the first and most important step to follow the mechanisms controlling the dispersal and accumulation of trace elements. Element speciation in different media (water, soil, food, plants, coal, biological matter, food, and fodder) is pivotal to assess an element's toxicity, bioavailability, environmental mobility, and biogeochemical performance. Recently, new analytical techniques have been developed, which greatly simplified the quantitation of many trace elements and considerably extended their detection range. In this context, the development of reproducible and accurate techniques for trace element analysis in different media using spectroscopic instrumentation is continuously updated.

It is a frequently told story that Paris was the world center of art at the beginning of the 20th century. This book asks what contribution exhibitions between 1921 and 1946 made to the development and dissemination of this narrative. It develops a transcultural perspective on the exhibitions in the cafés of the Montparnasse district of Paris and the international exhibitions of the "École de Paris".

A global research community of scientists is teasing out the biochemical mechanisms that regulate normal cellular physiology in a variety of organisms. Much of current research aims to understand the network of molecular reactions that regulate cellular homeostasis, and to learn what allows cells to sense stress and activate appropriate biochemical responses. Advanced molecular tools and state-of-the-art imaging techniques discussed in this book continue to provide novel insights into how environmental changes impact organisms, as well as to develop therapeutic interventions for correcting aberrant pathways in human disease.

This book describes China's growing range of activities in Africa, especially in the sub-Saharan region. The three most important instruments China has at its disposal in Africa are development aid, investments and trade policy. The Chinese government, which believes the Western development aid model has failed, is looking for new forms of aid and development in Africa. China's economic success can partly be ascribed to the huge availability of cheap labour, which is primarily employed in export-oriented industries. China is looking for the required raw materials in Africa, and for new marketplaces. Investments are being made on a large scale in Africa by Chinese state-controlled firms and private companies, particularly in the oil-producing countries (Angola, Nigeria and Sudan) and countries rich in minerals (Zambia). Third, the trade policy China is conducting is analysed in China and compared with that of Europe and the United States. In case studies the specific situation in several African countries is examined. In Zambia the mining industry, construction and agriculture are described. One case study of Sudan deals with the political presence of China in Sudan and the extent to which Chinese arms suppliers contributed to the current crisis in Darfur. The possibility of Chinese diplomacy offering a solution in that conflict is discussed. The conclusion considers whether social responsibility can be expected of the Chinese government and companies and if this is desirable, and to what extent the Chinese model in Africa can act as an example - or not - for the West.

Higher life expectancy on a global level requires complex nursing care as poor education and a lack of knowledge can lead to mistakes. There is a need for nurses who can provide high quality and advanced nursing practice. A mix of well-grounded education and innovative research is needed, where the first provides an understanding of best nursing practice care delivery and the second helps nurses determine best practices and improve nursing care."

Cognitive Culture Studies aims at studying the relation between mind and culture and their mutual interdependence. The mind produces culture as much as it is shaped by it. How the mind reaches out to the world out there and how this world translates into meaning, this is the overall issue of this book. The eight chapters claim, examine and perform the possibility and necessity of intersecting the study of culture and cognition by introducing key concepts like ‘tacit knowledge’, ‘force dynamics’, ‘conceptual blending’ and ‘intramental translation’. They apply these concepts in the analyses of literary works, Walter Benjamin’s ninth thesis on history, the idea of Utopia and Christopher Columbus’ non-discovery of the New World, alluding in the last chapter to the practical consequences of tacit knowledge and intramental translation in the practice of intercultural communication.

Distributional semantics embodies the idea that the context in which a word occurs reveals the meaning of that word. In contemporary corpus linguistics, that idea takes shape in various types of quantitative context analysis. This monograph explores how count-based token-level semantic vector spaces, as an advanced form of such a quantitative methodology, can be applied to the study of polysemy, lexical variation, and lectometry. What can distributional models reveal about meaning? How can they be used to analyse the semantic relationship between near-synonyms? And how can they contribute to the study of lexical variation as a sociolinguistic variable? The book details the conceptual background of lexical semantic and lexical variation research, explains the mechanism of distributional modelling, and introduces distributional workflows and corpus linguistic tools to answer the questions. Combining a cognitive linguistic interest in meaning with a sociolinguistic interest in variation, it illustrates that distributional methodology with case studies on Dutch and Spanish lexical data, focusing on the value of distributional models for semantic analysis, the interaction of semasiological and onomasiological change, and sociolinguistic issues of lexical standardization and pluricentricity.
