Schreiben braucht den Rückzug – so ein Topos, der das Schreiben zum Ort der Abgeschiedenheit macht. Doch werden Texte und Bücher nicht von Autoren allein gemacht, sondern im Wechselspiel verschiedener Akteure. Mit dem Aufkommen des Lektorats um 1900 wurde die Funktion des mitschreibenden Anderen institutionalisiert. Seitdem avancierte das Lektorat zu jener Vermittlungsinstanz, die nicht nur auswählt, welche Texte zu Büchern werden, sondern qua Mitarbeit am Text vielfach formt, was wir lesen. Welches Wissen wird zwischen Autor und Lektor ausgehandelt, hergestellt und angewendet? Lässt sich ein Text so ›verbessern‹, dass er seinen eigenen Maßgaben gerecht bleibt (oder vielleicht erst wird) und zugleich den Voraussetzungen seiner künftigen Öffentlichkeit entspricht? Die Verschiebung der Aufmerksamkeit vom singulären Autor auf den »unsichtbaren Zweiten« rückt die betrieblichen Bedingungen moderner Autorschaft in den Fokus. Literarisches Schreiben wird als eine relationale, kollaborative Praxis greifbar. Zugleich eröffnet der Blick auf das Lektorieren neue Perspektiven auf literarische Werke sowie auf die zugehörigen Schreibszenen und Autorenbilder. Das Buch versammelt vier Fallstudien, die auf größtenteils erstmals rekonstruiertem Quellenmaterial beruhen. Untersucht wird die Zusammenarbeit von Robert Walser und Christian Morgenstern, von Rainer Maria Rilke und Fritz Hünich, von Peter Handke und Elisabeth Borchers sowie von Marcel Beyer und Christian Döring.

Der Konfuzianismus behauptet, dass der Staat ein bestimmtes moralisches Gut für das Streben nach einem guten individuellen Leben bieten sollte. Damit zusammenhängend argumentiert die konfuzianistische Ideologie, dass der Allgemeinwohl vorrangig vor der Einhaltung der individuellen Rechten stehen muss, um ein gutes Leben für einzelnes Individuum gewähren zu können. Eine solche Sichtweise wird in dieser Arbeit kritisiert. Zugleich wird als primäre Obliegenheit eines Herrschers in der ostasiatischen Kultur oft die Glückseligkeit des individuellen, kleinbürgerlichen Staatsvolkes verlangt und geraten, das gleichzeitig die Beherrschten ist. Ziel dieser Studie ist es, die Entwicklung der "Asian values" auf der Grundlage des Konfuzianismus zu untersuchen und die darin enthaltene perfektionistische Perspektive zu kritisieren. Der Charakter des Menschen als einfaches, kleinbürgerliches Volk, den die asiatischen Perfektionisten wie oben erwähnt in ihren Forderungen voraussetzten, ist jedoch eine Natur von einem egoistischen Mensch, und interessanterweise ähneln sich die egoistische Menschen dem Menschenbild, was die klassische Wirschaftswissenschaftler von Westen sich vorgestellt haben. Aus diesem Grund wäre es sinnvoll, den Charakter des kooperativen Menschen zu betrachten, die kürzlich aus der Verhaltensökonomie aufgetaucht sind, um das Wesen des egoistischen Menschen zu kritisieren.

On the grey areas of subjects’ loyalty to the Habsburgs: Sabrina Rospert reinterprets the history of the uprising and the reorganisation of Hungary in the early 1670s. Absolutism and political arbitrariness – for a long time, these attributes were associated with the Viennese court’s reactions to the Hungarian uprisings of the early 1670s. In her study, Sabrina Rospert questions the Habsburgs’ unrestricted exercise of power for the first time: research in Austrian, Hungarian and Slovak administrative and local archives reveals not so much the extent of the authorities’ investigations as the relevance of distinguishing between forms of behaviour compliant with the authorities and open rebellion. The Viennese court relied on a broad policy of clemency and granted members of the estates (individuals, towns, counties) the right to renew their allegiance. Rehabilitation was an integral part of Habsburg power communication. At the intersection of revolt research and the paradigm of political communication, this study thus examines questions concerning the ‘perception threshold’ of rebellion; the micro-politics of endangered loyalty; and the diversity of forms of expression of defiance and loyalty to the ruler, particularly as reflected in confessional political conflicts in the Central European region of the early modern period.

Queer Generations offers a groundbreaking study of sexual citizenship, based on the coming of age narratives of two social generations of LGBTQ people in Australia. The open access book’s assembly and analysis of narrative accounts demonstrates the differences contained in people’s experiences of LGBTQ youth sexual citizenship. It is the first book to provide a robust empirical account of the diverse ways in which sexual citizenship is experienced and understood by different social generations of LGBTQ people growing up. By so doing, Queer Generations offers a unique analysis of ongoing contestations over the place of sexual and gender diversity in relation to citizenship. Reproductive injustice is an urgent global problem. We are faced with the increased criminalization of abortion, higher maternal and neonatal mortality rates for people of color, and more and more research addressing the structural nature of obstetric violence. In this collection of essays, the cause of reproductive injustice is understood as the institutionalized isolation of (potentially) pregnant people, making them vulnerable for bio- and necropolitical disciplination and control. The central thesis of this book is that reproductive justice must be achieved through a radical reappropriation of relationality in reproductive care to safeguard the access to knowledge and care needed for safe bodily self-determination. Through empirical research as well as decolonial, feminist, midwifery, and Black theory, reproductive justice is reimagined as abolitionist care, grounded in the abolition of authoritative obstetric institutions, state control of reproduction, and restrictive abortion laws in favor of community practices that are truly relational.

Als Nachfolger des früheren Internationalen Jahrbuchs für Medienphilosophie beschäftigt sich das Internationale Jahrbuch für Medienphilosophie und Medienästhetik in der ersten Ausgabe nach dem Relaunch mit der wesentlichen Frage: Was ist Medienästhetik? Diese Frage steht für eine doppelte Öffnung: Medienästhetik markiert eine Suchbewegung, die die philosophischen wie medienwissenschaftlichen Grundlagen erkundet, die in medienästhetischen Kontexten in Erscheinung treten können. Zugleich lädt sie ein zu einer historischen Kartographierung und begrifflichen Konturierung von Medienästhetik, einer Diskussion ihrer unterschiedlichen Modellierungen und der sich daraus ergebenden Optionen für Kritik. Ziel ist es, den Begriff Medienästhetik offen zu halten und aus seiner Problematisierung immer wieder neue disziplinübergreifende Debatten anzustoßen. Das Jahrbuch bietet unterschiedlichen Projekten, Positionen und Fragestellungen Raum, die zueinander im Modus des Dissenses, der Überschneidung, der Assoziation, aber auch der inhaltlichen Weiterführung stehen können.

This report is the first independent, substantive and public assessment of the progress of the African Union. Towards a People-Driven African Union: Current Obstacles and New Opportunities analyses the preparations of African Union member-states, the AU Commission and civil society organisations for the twice-yearly AU summits. The main finding is that despite some welcome new opportunities for participation, the African Union's vision of 'an Africa driven by its own citizens' remains largely unfulfilled. Detailed recommendations are offered to help deliver on this vision in future. Published by AFRODAD, AfriMAP and Oxfam, this report is endorsed by more than a dozen other organisations in Africa and elsewhere, and is based on interviews with more than 50 representatives of member-states, the AU Commission and civil society organisations in eleven African countries.

The past few decades have seen a burgeoning interest in the manuscript cultures of the Muslim world. The study of manuscripts has brought to light new perspectives on the transmission of texts and larger questions of cultural practices passed down within the learned circles of premodern Muslim societies. The intellectual and literary heritage of Ismaili communities, who form a branch of Shi'i Islam, has until recently been preserved in private and largely inaccessible libraries. This open access volume brings together studies offering insights on different aspects of the manuscript cultures nurtured by Ismaili communities until well after the widespread dissemination of printed books. The range of materials transmitted via these manuscripts in Arabic, Persian and Indic languages also reflects the doctrinal and literary preoccupations of Muslims at large and of other groups from the societies in which Ismailis lived. Hence, the manuscripts bear the imprint of their respective cultural contexts, namely a number of regions from the Near East to Central and South Asia. In addition to engaging with multifaceted problems surrounding the processes of textual transmission, the chapters in this book deal with other connected aspects like codicology, scribal and reading practices, educational and social history, authorship, communal script, religious identity and interactions of ideas across ideological denominations. With contributions from specialists and early-career scholars, the volume will be of interest to those working on textual scholarship, manuscript and literary cultures and Islamic studies. This open access book presents new developments in the field of demographic forecasting, covering both mortality, fertility and migration. For each component emerging methods to forecast them are presented. Moreover, instruments for forecasting evaluation are provided. Could there have been television without California? California without television? The one shows the other: the ostentatiously novel singularity of the place and the seemingly self-effacing transparency of the medium. Yet if television and California both promise again and again to offer us something new, young, immaculate in its transience — a pure surface that will never get caught in the ditch of time — they are also both haunted through and through: by the itinerant contents of the past that they cannot banish, by memories of the infantile-perverse utopian fantasies that taunt us in constant replay (“If you’re going to San Francisco…,” “two girls for every guy”), by the contradiction played out in the very gesture of dismissing history and leaving the dead to bury the dead. California and television, as it were, conspire in a vampirologic: the forever-young is what has been there the longest, what really “takes us back.”
