Through a comparion of etnographic research in the UK and Brazil, this chapter has examined now changing scientific and medical understandings regarding the origin, genealogical history and patrimony of the so-called Ashkenazi mutations have been diversely taken up and put to use in clinical/research contexts. It has explored the very differing differing differing consequences this can have for the way health care practitioners, scientists, patients and their families engage with and incorporate knowledge about hereditary BRCA mutations into scientific narratives, clinical practices and understandings of clinical/familial risk and identity.

Childhood cancer or pediatric cancer is one of the leading causes of death among children. Treatment strategies for pediatric cancers include chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, and stem cell transplantation. These therapeutic regimens are well known to develop highly toxic and long-lasting side-effects including secondary cancers in the future lifespan of pediatric patients. Despite these intensive therapeutic regimens, cancer may still relapse as refractory and metastatic cancer. Therefore, further understanding the causes of different pediatric cancers, mechanisms of drug-resistance, and causes of relapse and metastasis is required for developing and advancing less toxic and more effective therapeutic strategies for pediatric cancers. Recent advancements in immunotherapies and targeted therapeutic approaches using pharmacological inhibitors are one step in this direction. In this Special Issue of Cancers, authors contributed original research and review articles focusing on different aspects of pediatric cancer development, causes, maintenance, and therapeutic strategies. The collected articles in this Special Issue will further enhance our knowledge and understanding of pediatric cancers and drive the development of novel therapeutic strategies.

This volume brings together more than three dozen texts on the current moment of European integration, with contributions from professors and researchers in the social sciences and humanities, linked to different faculties and research centers at the University of Coimbra, but also from other universities. The book presents a reflection on the construction of the European project, situated in space and time. Looking at the last forty years of teaching these subjects at the University of Coimbra (UC), it initially offers a reflection on the contribution of this house of knowledge to the understanding of the European Union, both in Portugal and in other parts of the world. By mapping and reflecting on the teaching and research activities of the Faculties of Law, Economics and Letters at the UC, it seeks to present the public with a historiography of the course of ‘European studies’ in Coimbra, in its multiple perspectives and sensitivities.

This volume aims to bring together, discuss and further develop the findings and perspectives of two relevant debates in medieval and economic history – the fourteenth-century conjuncture and pre-industrial inequality – through nineteen original and state-of-the-art contributions in English and Italian by established scholars and promising young researchers. Focusing on Central-Northern Italy and Western Europe between c. 1270 and c. 1350, the volume aims to understand why, how and to what extent medieval society was unequal in the seventy years before the Great Plague of 1347-52, presenting a wide range of sources and methods, exploring and discussing the causal mechanisms of socio-economic inequalities, and examining how these differences were perceived, represented and dealt with in the late Middle Ages, extending the investigation in some cases to the post-Black Death period.

Sex work is often called the oldest profession in the world. It manifests itself in a plethora of forms. A move to private locations is now taking place: contacts are established via the Internet and meetings take place at appointed places. This makes it more difficult to monitor forced work, and exploitation therefore risks remaining undetected. This book presents empirical findings regarding exploitation in various countries, considering sex workers, traffickers and clients, and the fight against human trafficking. Countries differ vastly in their legislative approaches, ranging from highly repressive to very liberal. This volume asks whether the ongoing process of making and changing laws is sufficiently effective in fighting human trafficking. Other interventions could obtain better outcomes, such as promoting more independence among women and helping trafficked individuals to get out. Less ideology and more attention to the facts of exploitation and sex work might help to achieve these aims.

Eutrophication affects many lakes, reservoirs, rivers and coastal areas in France and throughout the world. It has a major disruptive effect on aquatic ecosystems and an impact on assets and associated services, human health and economic activities. This book sets out the available scientific knowledge on this phenomenon. It identifies existing levers for action and the national and international provisions introduced to monitor and combat eutrophication.

In its steady march across the United States, methamphetamine has become, to quote former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, “the most dangerous drug in America.” As a result, there has been a concerted effort at the local level to root out the methamphetamine problem by identifying the people at its source—those known or suspected to be involved with methamphetamine. Government-sponsored anti-methamphetamine legislation has enhanced these local efforts, formally and informally encouraging rural residents to identify meth offenders in their communities. Policing Methamphetamine shows what happens in everyday life—and to everyday life—when methamphetamine becomes an object of collective concern. Drawing on interviews with users, police officers, judges, and parents and friends of addicts in one West Virginia town, William Garriott finds that this overriding effort to confront the problem changed the character of the community as well as the role of law in creating and maintaining social order. Ultimately, this work addresses the impact of methamphetamine and, more generally, the war on drugs, on everyday life in the United States.
