The Swiss journalist, writer and literary patron Carl Seelig (1894–1962) was an extraordinary networker. He is remembered as friend and guardian of Robert Walser – and yet he was much more: his multifaceted work makes him a central marginal figure in literary history. The 16 contributions in this volume fulfill a desideratum of research by addressing this notoriously underestimated multiplier.

Analyzing informal trading practices and smuggling through the case study of Novi Pazar, this book explores how societies cope when governments no longer assume the responsibility for providing welfare to their citizens. How do economic transnational practices shape one’s sense of belonging in times of crisis/precarity? Specifically, how does the collapse of the Ottoman Empire – and the subsequent migration of the Muslim Slav population to Turkey – relate to the Yugoslav Succession Wars during the 1990s? Using the case study of Novi Pazar, a town in Serbia that straddles the borders of Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo that became a smuggling hub during the Yugoslav conflict, the book focuses on that informal market economy as a prism through which to analyze the strengthening of existing relations between the émigré community in Turkey and the local Bosniak population in the Sandžak region. Demonstrating the interactive nature of relations between the state and local and émigré communities, this book will be of interest to scholars and students interested in Southeastern Europe or the Yugoslav Succession Wars of the 1990s, as well as social anthropologists who are working on social relations and deviant behavior.

This is an open access book. This textbook contains about 200 fully solved problems in analytical and numerical methods for nonlinear osccillations. These comprise all the end-of-chapter problems in Ali H. Nayfeh and Dean T. Mook’s famous textbook Nonliear Oscillations. Mathematical software are adopted to make those solutions more accessible from a graphical point of view. This book can be adopted as a supplement to course work study for graduates or senior undergraduates. Since many exercise problems are adapted from scientific research papers, this book also has a good reference value for scientists and engineers who work in nonlinear vibration.

Ali Haggett extends the boundaries of previous work, exploring the discourse around gender and prevention of mental illness in Britain from the 1950s. The chapter examines how important information about health and well-being was communicated to men, and in turn, how men conceptualised their own psychological well-being. Drawing on a range of printed primary sources and archival material, the chapter explores the medical, political and cultural context within which men and women negotiated ideas about their own well-being in post-war Britain. It argues that, for a range of complex reasons and competing exigencies, male mental health was almost entirely neglected—both reflecting and reinforcing prevailing assumptions about masculinity, coping and the image of the ‘strong, silent man’.

As part of the Ecophyto II+ plan, INRAE and Ifremer were entrusted in 2020 with the task of conducting a collective scientific assessment on the impacts of plant protection products on biodiversity and ecosystem services. The results, released in May 2022, confirm that all types of terrestrial and aquatic environments, all of their compartments and most of the organisms found there are contaminated by plant protection products. Contamination varies according to the distance from the areas where the products are used, mainly in agriculture. It has direct and indirect impacts on ecosystems, in particular the decline of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrate and bird populations, as well as the alteration of ecosystem functions and services. Different levers contribute to mitigating contamination and its impacts, with varying effectiveness depending on their combination (regulations, conditions of use of products, etc.). This expertise identifies research needs, in particular to better understand dynamic phenomena in a context of multiple pressures on the environment. The aim is to characterise and predict the impacts and to improve the procedures for assessing the risks associated with the use of plant protection products. This book is intended for all actors and decision-makers concerned by the use of plant protection products, whether they are involved in the legal, political, industrial or associative fields, or in research or teaching.

This open access book presents contributions to decolonize development studies. It seeks to promote and sustain new forms of solidarity and conviviality that work towards achieving social justice.Recognising global poverty and inequalities as historic injustices, the book addresses how these can be challenged through teaching, research, and engagement in policy and practice, and the sorts of political barriers these might encounter. From a variety of perspectives and contexts, these chapters examine how decoloniality and solidarity can be developed, offering in-depth historical, theoretical, epistemological, and empirical analyses.

What happened when European colonialism coopted or confronted societies in Asia and the Indian Ocean World for the purpose of slaving, and what are the tools to analyse this? These are questions that guide the present volume. For several hundred years after 1498, seafaring European powers were involved in an increasingly fine-tuned network of commercial relations along the coastlands of the Indian Ocean World and Asia, while Russia steadily expanded into North Asia. A sombre but economically significant part of all this was the trade and employment of enslaved people which flourished until relatively modern times and was partly handled through colonial supervision. This edited volume brings together scholarship about regional histories of colonialism, slavery, and slave trade, including related forms of forced labour and relocation in Asia and the wider Indian Ocean region. The ten chapters feature case studies from the Indian Ocean islands, India, Sri Lanka, Siberia, and Southeast Asia, ranging from the 16th to 19th centuries. The chapters highlight the variety of strategies of slaving that evolved when early colonial and commercial organizations met with local or regional slaving regimes. Additionally, the authors highlight cutting-edge methods of database creation and analysis that are revolutionizing our knowledge of the slaving circuits, indicating that numbers of people transported reached almost the level of the infamous Atlantic slave trade.

The volume Intorno a Boccaccio / Boccaccio e dintorni 2017 arises from the international seminar held in Certaldo on September 16, 2017, promoted by the ENGB National Association and now in its fourth edition. Every year, the seminar aims at giving voice to young scholars, who are invited to present their research, either concluded or current. The volume, together with the contributions on the Decameron, stands out for the attention given to other works by Boccaccio (Buccolicum carmen, Teseida, De casibus virorum illustrium), for the examination of themes which are present in multiple works (Boccaccio and the empire, Homer’s biography) and for three contributions focused on the Fortleben of works and themes regarding Boccaccio.
