Between the 360s and the late second century BCE, Cyrenaean documents attest the importance of a local board of magistrates: the damiergoi, who were in charge of administering some sacred estates and their revenues to fund sacrifices and provide for other city officials. This board of magistrates published their accounts annually on stone in the city’s agora. The thirty-eight surviving accounts can be divided into four different phases and have proved to be an extremely precious source for the evolution of layout strategies, writing media, abbreviations, and numeral systems viewed in a longue durée perspective. From a close examination, further elements stand out, such as how and to what extent other areas – namely Attica and Ptolemaic Egypt – and their administrative traditions influenced the damiergoi’s accounting practices. Moreover, this re-examination of the damiergoi accounts sheds light on an abbreviation found in the early-third-century-CE papyrus Marmarica (P.Marm.), which has so far been misinterpreted as a siglum for an uncommon unit of measurement: the ((hepta))m(etron scil. keramion). Cyrenaean evidence permits an alternative hypothesis, namely that the liquid measure used here is the centuries-old zm(ireus) – i.e., smireus – which is already attested in the accounts of the damiergoi.

People were watching and listening on the move long before the iPhone’s launch. The world of always-on streaming, accessible anywhere, has a pre-history: magic lanterns, drive-in theaters, and portable radios. In *Mobile Personalization*, Justin Grandinetti and Charlie Ecenbarger place Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, TikTok, and other corporate claimants in a lineage that includes the build-out of sprawling, invisible infrastructures—undersea cables, server farms, and adtech. These “architectures of mobility,” together with their Silicon Valley underwriters, make seamless, algorithmic streams possible and profitable. The upshot is an evolving regime of mobile personalization, with entertainment for consumers and data-driven monetization for companies. *Mobile Personalization* recasts foundational ideas from Raymond Williams, including “flow” and “mobile privatization,” to account for the algorithmic delivery of targeted video and audio to lucrative audiences. As this important new book argues, the mobile streamers have delivered convenience, but also audience fragmentation and behavioral capture.

The ideas presented in this book are new scientific theories based largely upon a spate of very recent astronomical observations. These theories include: a cosmological model that appears to be superior, in many respects, to the inflationary "concordance model"; proposed thermal stability criteria for a generic quantum black hole; theoretical constraints concerning black hole binary graviton emissions; theoretical effects of abelian vortices on space-time; and a proposed solution to the mystery of the observed asymmetry between universal matter and antimatter. The new ideas presented in this book have been selected in order to inspire others that, regardless of the impending limits of observation, the scientific creative process will continue.

While language contacts are a classic topic in linguistics, less attention is paid to writing contacts, both because of the many skills (linguistic, palaeographical, ethno-anthropological) required of those studying them and because of an approach that interprets writing as ancillary to language. Hence the challenge of this volume: to bring together linguists from different fields with the twofold aim of offering a broad selection of the different forms of contact between languages and between scripts and, through comparison, to highlight the elements common to situations that are distant in time and space.

The solidarity dimension of tax duty requires the legislator to make choices regarding the distribution of tax burdens in the society based on criteria of reasonableness and proportionality. From this point of view, the excess-profits tax reveal some critical points also due to their selective and extraordinary nature.

Hasan Sijzi is considered the originator of the Indo-Persian ghazal, a poetic form that endures to this day — from the legacy of Hasan’s poetic descendent, Hafez, to contemporary Anglophone poets such as John Hollander, Maxine Kumin, Agha Shahid Ali, and W. S. Merwin. As with other Persian poets, Hasan worked within a highly regulated set of poetic conventions that brought into relief the interpenetration of apparent opposites — metaphysical and material, mysterious and quotidian, death and desire, sacred and profane, fleeting time and eternity. Within these strictures, he crafted a poetics that blended Sufi Islam with non-Muslim Indic traditions. Of the Persian poets who practiced the ghazal, Hafez and Rumi are best known, but their verse represents only a small fraction of a rich tradition. This collection reveals the geographical range of the literature while introducing an Indian voice that will find a place on readers’ bookshelves alongside better known Iranian names.

The edition of Leo Thun-Hohenstein's diary allows an intimate look at the early years of the later reformer of Austrians education system. Dealing with foreign cultures and questioning social norms characterized Thun's adventurous youth as a high aristocrat and allowed him to grow into a socially committed politician who, after the revolutions of 1848, was to help determine the fate of the Habsburg Empire. A biography of Thun and a source-critical analysis provide additional information on the environment of this fascinating personality.

This edited volume brings together several scholars who have produced outstanding ethnographies of Andean communities, mostly in Peru but also in neighbouring countries. These ethnographies were published between the 1970s and 2000s, following different theoretical and thematic approaches, and they often transcended the boundaries of case studies to become important reference works on key aspects of Andean culture: for example, the symbolism and ritual uses of coca in the case of Catherine J. Allen agricultural rituals and internal social divisions in the case of Peter Gose social organisation and kinship in the case of Billie Jean Isbell the use of khipus and concepts of literacy in the case of Frank Salomon and the management and ritual dimensions of water and irrigation in the case of Ricardo Valderrama and Carmen Escalante. In their chapters the authors revisit their original works in the light of contemporary anthropology, focusing on different academic and personal aspects of their ethnographies. For example, they explain how they chose the communities they worked in the personal relations they established there during fieldwork the kind of links they have maintained and how these communities have changed over time. They also review their original methodological and theoretical approaches and findings, reassessing their validity and explaining how their views have evolved or changed since they originally conducted their fieldwork and published their studies. This book also offers a review of the evolution and role of community ethnographies in the context of Andean anthropology. These ethnographies had a significant influence between the 1940s and 1980s, when they could be roughly divided – following Olivia Harris – between ‘long-termist’ and ‘short-termist’ approaches, depending on predominant focuses on historical continuities or social change respectively. However, by the 1990s these works came to be widely considered as too limited and subjective in the context of wider academic changes, such as the emergence of postmodern trends, and reflective and literary turns in anthropology. Overall, the book aims to reflect on this evolution of community ethnographies in the Andes, and on their contribution to the study of Andean culture.

Sigfried Giedion (1888–1968), one of the main protagonists of the architectural avant-garde in Europe, paradoxically achieved this reputation in America, far from his homeland. Nearly all of Giedion’s books written after his initial stay at Harvard University were published in English long before they became available in his native German. Reto Geiser sheds new light on Giedion’s life and reassesses his work through the lens of cultural transformation and modernization processes. The author questions the unbroken line of developments portrayed in the historiography of modern architecture, and argues that Giedion’s position in between two cultural spheres not only caused ruptures and contradictions in his work but also productively shaped its reception on either side of the Atlantic.
