One of the ways meanings of words can be understood is based on their distributional properties. Such methodology offers an interesting quantitative viewpoint on the study of the lexicography of long-extinct languages. This chapter explores the use of Pointwise Mutual Information (PMI), a well-known statistical word association measure used in collocation analysis. PMI is applied to the data in order to gain insights on the semantic nuances of Akkadian verbs of seeing (amāru, naṭālu, palāsu, dagālu, ḫiātu, barû, and subbû). To evaluate the data-driven results, the findings are compared to previous philological work by Ainsley Dicks. The analysis of the top-ranked PMI-extracted collocates provides a good overview of the typical semantic differences between the seven verbs of interest.

It is crucial that we strengthen existing structures worldwide, especially in earthquake-prone areas. Recent earthquakes have highlighted the inadequacy of many existing structures, which have been damaged from previous powerful earthquakes and have been designed without code provisions or according to old code provisions that are now obsolete. Furthermore, the majority of existing buildings in low- and middle-income countries have been constructed using substandard materials and without application of code provisions; therefore, the structural vulnerability in these areas is highly concerning.Recently, there has been enormous development in novel construction materials that could be effectively utilised to protect existing structures and to enhance structural resilience. This Special Issue provides an overview of the latest scientific advancements in the development of novel technologies for durable earthquake-resistant Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures. These studies are focused on the development and application of innovative repair and strengthening techniques using novel composite and high-performance materials for the structural performance improvement and improved durability of existing RC structures.

Electromechanical transducers based on piezoelectric layers and thin films are continuously finding their way into micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). Piezoelectric transducers feature a linear voltage response, no snap-in behavior and can provide both attractive and repulsive forces. This removes inherent physical limitations present in the commonly used electrostatic transducer approach, while maintaining beneficial properties such as low-power operation. In order to exploit the full potential of piezoelectric MEMS, interdisciplinary research efforts range from investigations of advanced piezoelectric materials over the design of novel piezoelectric MEMS sensor and actuator devices, to the integration of PiezoMEMS devices into full low-power systems. In this Special Issue, the current status of this exciting research field will be presented, covering a wide range of topics including, but not limited to: • Experimental and theoretical research on piezoelectric materials such as AlN, ScAlN, ZnO or PZT, PVDF with a strong focus on the application of MEMS devices. • Deposition and synthesis techniques for piezoelectric materials enabling integration of those materials into MEMS fabrication processes. • Modelling and simulation of piezoelectric MEMS devices and systems. • Piezoelectric MEMS resonators for measuring physical quantities such as mass, acceleration, yaw rate, pressure and viscosity or density of liquids. • Optical MEMS devices, such as scanning micro mirror devices and optical switches, based on piezoelectric MEMS. • Acoustic devices, such as SAW, BAW or FBARs and acoustic transducers, based on piezoelectric MEMS, such as microphones or loudspeakers. • Piezoelectric energy harvesting devices. • Specific packaging aspects of piezoelectric devices and systems. • Low and zero power systems, featuring low-power sensors combined with energy harvesting devices, at least one of which is based on piezoelectric MEMS.

In recent years, thin layer technologies, including fabrication of different micro- and nano-structures, have undergone tremendous progress. Such layers are made for a variety of industrial and scientific applications. Due to the extreme physico-chemical properties of the available structures, there are many promising applications (eg, due to biocompatibility, biological and medical applications between living tissues and materials). Pre-tailored special surface layers/structures could be realized for implants in dental, neurological and orthopedic applications. There are also different methods that have been applied to produce special mono and multilayers with extreme electrical end magnetic properties. Also some methods have been developed to produce surface structure applications eg, for environmental applications with necessary resistivity and anti-corrosion properties. Some theoretical/mathematical simulation methods have also been developed for better compatibility of theory with experiments. This book consists of 10 chapters describing the physico-chemical base of deposition and coating microfabrication, thus providing some overview on how to measure the physical and chemical parameters of fabricated structures and how to solve compatibility and fitting problems, etc.

This book is an attempt to both bridge the gap—and show the similarities—in understanding this issue on both sides, as well as to examine the dynamics of the interplay between the United States and Japan over the destiny of the islands. It is not only a historical study of U.S.-Japan relations and Japanese political and diplomatic history but is also an attempt to contribute to Bonin- and Iwo Jima-related studies.

The aim of this research is to expose Wiktor Voroshilsky’s translation strategy, especially the translation methods and techniques he uses as the author of the Polish versions of Russian poems. Theorists of translation quite often pay attention to the problem of translation of proper names, exploring different contexts related to this issue. Bazyli Tichoniuk wrote about the translation of names within Polish and Russian at the time, while for other languages we can mention works by Ewa Teodorowicz-Hellman, Anna Szcześniak, Elżbieta Skibińska, Anna Majkiewicz, and Krzysztof Hejwowski. This article attempts to indicate a specific translator’s approach to translating proper names. The material under study consists of 25 poems selected from 211 works translated by Voroshilsky. The main selection criterion was the saturation of the poem with elements of interest to the authors, as well as their diversity. This determined the research method, which focused on analysing the repeatability and variety of translation techniques. Finally, we concluded that Voroshilsky employed different methods of translation, often guided by the function performed by the proper names in the text. We also paid attention to his objective to bring the text closer to the target audience and on the creativity of the translator.
