The Bantu Expansion is one of the most intriguing issues in African history. Based on extensive fieldwork in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and laboratory analysis, this book provides the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and multi-proxy account of the first Bantu speakers south of the Congo rainforest. This volume begins with state-of-the-art reviews of the archaeological, palaeoenvironmental, genetic, linguistic, and oral historical contexts of the Bantu Expansion and includes evidence from over 150 previously unknown archaeological sites with extensive analyses of pottery, lithics, soil stable isotopes, phytoliths, charcoal, and human remains. Seven appendices contain the full metadata, radiometric, and geographical data for each site and comparative language data. The volume concludes with a sweeping interdisciplinary reconstruction of the first Bantu-speaking settlers in the Kwilu-Kasai region and rethinks how farming, climate change, and contact with Central African hunter-gatherers and Ubangi speakers impacted their lifeworld. This book is indispensable for scholars and students of Africa from a wide variety of fields such as archaeology, palaeoecology, linguistics, population genetics, history, and anthropology, and of considerable interest to scientists active in other parts of the world. All who think African history matters will find it a valuable source.

The invariable motif for analog design is to explore the new circuit topologies, architectures and CAD technologies to overcome the design challenges coming from the new applications and new fabrication technologies. In this book, a new architecture for a SAR ADC is proposed to eliminate the process mismatches and minimize the errors. A collection of DG-MOSFET based analog/RFICs present the excellent performance; the automated system for a passive filter circuits design is presented with the local searching engaging; interval analysis is used to solve some problems for linear and nonlinear analog circuits and a symbolic method is proposed to solve the testability problem.

With the rapid development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials have been widely applied in many industrial sectors, including medicine, consumer products, and electronics. While such technology has brought benefits and convenience to our daily lives, it may also potentially threaten human health. In some cases, nanomaterials present unexpected risks to both humans and the environment. Assessments of the potential hazards associated with nanotechnology have been emerging, but substantial challenges remain, because the large number of different nanomaterials cannot be effectively evaluated in a timely manner. The development of a good strategy for a nanomaterials hazard assessment not only promotes the more widespread adoption of non-rodent or 3Rs principles, but also makes nanotoxicology testing more ethical, relevant, and cost- and time-efficient. A thorough understanding of the mechanisms by which nanomaterials perturb biological systems is critical for a more comprehensive elucidation of their nanotoxicity, and this will also facilitate the development of prevention and intervention policies against adverse outcomes induced by them. We hope that the articles included in this eBook can provide updated knowledge on nanotoxicology and nanosafety, from the point of view of both toxicology and ecotoxicology.

A growing number of countries are implementing school initiatives aimed at developing students’ knowledge of multiple languages to help them thrive in a globalized world. Research indicates that learning languages can be made more effective if teachers draw on their own and their students’ entire language repertoires during lessons, yet few studies have systematically investigated the extent to which language teachers are willing and able to do this. This chapter reports the findings from a mixed-methods study on secondary school teachers of Arabic, English, and French based in the UAE that explored their teaching practices using an ecological perspective. Drawing upon data collected via unstructured interviews, the study’s findings revealed common themes among the participants vis-à-vis their ability and willingness to draw on their and their students’ multilingualism as a pedagogical resource. The chapter concludes by offering recommendations for how schools and policymakers can implement specific measures to help teachers and students fully realize their multilingual potential.
