. ; Are the priorities of sustainable strategies aligned with the local realities and needs of Haitian society? Are local actors involved in the economic development process? What role does the local community play in collective decision making? Do the ruling class and policy makers have the will to make local development and decentralization an effective reality in Haiti? The foundations of these concepts assume that community, actors, citizens, and authorities should be included in the decision-making process. Aimed to leading to the development of sustainable policies, however, local development planning is difficult to institutionalize. Lovinski’s analysis is based on a multifaceted interpretation of development and takes an institutional approach to public policy. Thereby, prompting an interrogation of sustainable policies prioritized by policy makers. This investigation examines the steps taken to achieve sustainable policies and shows the results and considering the dynamics and their ambiguities.

The Representation of Science and Scientists on Postage Stamps examines how the postal authorities of the world have developed unique techniques to portray science and scientists in order to convey a message behind the stamp issue. It is a multi-disciplinary examination that investigates visual representation, semiotics, science, science history and politics, amongst other issues. The author introduces and describes a technique for looking at how and why images may have been chosen. Is the image a mirror reflecting a known reality or is it a lens to challenge, to prompt further thought or action? He also hypothesises that the Internet created a real change to science communication, influencing the way images of science were used. The stamp message changed from that of pursuing a public understanding approach to an awareness of science with its increasing contextual content.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and cause of joint pain in adults. It affects more than 500 million people worldwide. Patients develop osteoarthritis when the structure of the protective cartilage that covers the bones begins to deteriorate. Recent research shows that multiple drugs in development are promising to treat osteoarthritis. Yet, most physicians agree that we still do not have enough effective treatments for this condition. What works for one person might not work for someone else. Consequently, osteoarthritis research is very important because understanding what causes osteoarthritis or why it progresses remains controversial. In fact, although articular cartilage is the primary target of the disease, both subchondral bone and synovium are often actively involved. This book describes the details of both surgical and non-surgical treatment options for osteoarthritis.

Divided into ten points, this paper aims to illustrate how fashion produced modernity, understood as valuing the present, especially its progressive and evolving elements. A process that focused on amplifying “personal visibility”, and in which the abilities of tailors played a crucial role. The effects on the economy of “modern” fashion, born in the Middle Ages, have been significant. Since the thirteenth century, treatisers and preachers, as well as legislators, focused on the way people dressed as a means to regulate society, while artisanal shops invented, ever so often, new objects and prepared unseen social and political scenarios. For all these and many other reasons, we can state that fashion moved and was a metaphor of modernity.

The murky history behind municipal laws criminalizing disability In the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, municipal laws targeting "unsightly beggars" sprang up in cities across America. Seeming to criminalize disability and thus offering a visceral example of discrimination, these “ugly laws” have become a sort of shorthand for oppression in disability studies, law, and the arts. In this watershed study of the ugly laws, Susan M. Schweik uncovers the murky history behind the laws, situating the varied legislation in its historical context and exploring in detail what the laws meant. Illustrating how the laws join the history of the disabled and the poor, Schweik not only gives the reader a deeper understanding of the ugly laws and the cities where they were generated, she locates the laws at a crucial intersection of evolving and unstable concepts of race, nation, sex, class, and gender. Moreover, she explores the history of resistance to the ordinances, using the often harrowing life stories of those most affected by their passage. Moving to the laws’ more recent history, Schweik analyzes the shifting cultural memory of the ugly laws, examining how they have been used—and misused—by academics, activists, artists, lawyers, and legislators.

In Two Crows Denies It, R. H. Barnes undertakes an ambitious historical analysis of anthropological scholarship about Omaha kinship systems. His groundbreaking work offers a critique of this established scholarship, including the work of Lévi-Strauss, Dorsey, and Fletcher. In comparing the primary and secondary accounts of Omaha descent, relationship, and naming systems, Barnes reveals the dissonance between the reality of Omaha society and the scholarship that has formed around it. Not only does he put forth a new and more realistic interpretation of Omaha sociology specifically, but in so doing he provides a reinterpretation of an aspect of anthropological theory.

Title in English: 57th Annual Cytogenomics Conference: Collection of abstracts The collection contains abstracts of lectures and posters presented at the 57th Annual Cytogenomics Conference, which took place on September 5–6, 2024 in Brno. Individual contributions cover the two main areas of cytogenomics, oncocytogenomics and clinical cytogenomics. In the oncocytogenomics section, the results of analyzes were presented mainly from the field of hematological malignancies, such as leukemia and lymphomas, but also from the field of solid tumors of both children and adults. The field of clinical cytogenomics was presented with statistical overviews of the occurrence of congenital developmental defects and interesting findings of congenital chromosomal and gene aberrations, interesting case reports from routine clinical practice. Both areas of cytogenomics then together showed the importance and use of the method of optical genome mapping (OGM) in the section Advanced methods in cytogenomics.

Security, Religion, and the Rule of Law argues that true, substantive, and sustainable national security is only possible through respect for the rule of law, human rights, and religious freedom. Despite the emphasis on national security and the war on terror that has preoccupied governments for over two decades, nations – and the world – seem to be more divided than ever, with a concomitant impact of increasing the risk of terrorism and religious and political violence. The national security paradigm, previously reserved primarily for foreign threats, has been turned increasingly inwards, focusing on a state’s own citizens as potential threats. This is often along religious lines, threatening fundamental human freedoms. This book provides a series of critical engagements on some of the most pressing issues at the interface of religion and security today, including proposing a deeper engagement with theology when dealing with freedom of religious belief, exploring a better understanding between domestic peace and international relations, abiding by the rule of law while countering terrorism, and developing a broader understanding of identities and of the nature of citizenship. It provides the resources to further reflect upon and address these topics, as well as stimulate further discussions on religion and security matters across a range of different disciplines. Wide-ranging case studies consider Australia, China, Europe, the Kurdish people, Nigeria, Russia, Ukraine, the United Nations, and the United States. This book will appeal to students and scholars across a range of disciplines, including international relations, law, philosophy, political science, religious studies, security studies, and theology. It will also appeal to human rights lawyers, judges, NGO researchers, governmental agency specialists, and policy makers.
