Religious traditions, symbols, and practices are shaped by gender gender roles, stereotypes, and ideals have religious underpinnings. Studying gender in religious studies means taking the category of gender into account when collecting, describing, and analyzing data pertaining to religion. It also means uncovering the normativity of entanglements between religion and gender as well as making opposing trends visible.

Never before has a collection of original essays strived to create such constructive, shared discourse between ecocritical and narrative scholars as well as environmental humanities scholars interested in narrative. Erin James and Eric Morel’s volume Environment and Narrative: New Directions in Econarratology explores the complexity of pairing material environments and their representations with narrative forms of understanding. To explore the methodological possibilities within “econarratology,” the contributors evaluate the mechanics of how narratives convey environmental understanding via building blocks such as the organization of time and space, characterization, focalization, description, and narration. They also query how readers emotionally and cognitively engage with such representations and how the process of encountering different environments in narratives stands to affect real-world attitudes and behaviors.

Monkeys are probably the animals with which we most readily identify when it comes to recognizing the human in the animal. Nevertheless, they symbolize, as it were, a fear of human degeneration. The particular human-animal relationship is the subject of this cultural history. Frank Jacob explains what role apes played for the self-perception of humans and how they were and are understood as humanoid animals, for example as objects in research and popular media. In doing so, he sheds light on a history of relationships that continues to this day, whereby the intensity of this relationship between humans and primates has been redefined again and again over the centuries.

A new examination of the International Criminal Court (ICC) from a political science and international relations perspective. It describes the main features of the court and discusses the political negotiations and the on-going clashes between those states who oppose the court, particularly the United States, and those who defend it. It also makes these issues accessible to non-lawyers and presents effective advocacy strategies for non-governmental organizations. It also delivers essential background to the place of the US in international relations and makes a major contribution to thinking about the ICC’s future. While global civil society does not deliver global democracy, it does contribute to more transparent, more deliberative and more ethical international decision-making which is ultimately preferable to a world of isolated sovereign states with no accountability outside their borders, or exclusive and secretive state-to-state diplomacy. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of international relations, international law, globalization and global governance.

Covering a wide range of different online platforms, including social media sites and chatrooms, this volume is a comprehensive exploration of the current state of sociological and criminological scholarship focused on online deviance. Understanding deviance broadly, the handbook acknowledges both an objective normative approach and a subjective, reactivist approach to the topic, putting into sharp relief the distinctions between cybercrime and online deviance on the one hand, and wider concerns of online communities related to online deviance on the other. Divided into five sections, the first section is devoted primarily to scholarship about the theories and methods foundational to exploring online deviance. The second section, “Gender, Sex, and Sexuality”, presents empirical research on expressions of gender, sex, and sexuality in online spaces considered deviant. The third section, “Violence and Aggression,” highlights scholarship on types of violent communications such as hate speech and cyberstalking. The fourth section, “Communities and Culture,” describes empirical research on online communities and networks that can be described as deviant by wider society. Lastly, the fifth section, “Regional Perspectives,” highlights research in which a terrestrial location is impactful to the online phenomena studied. Providing a window into future scholarship over the next several years and acknowledging the ephemeral nature of research on digital technology, The Routledge International Handbook on Online Deviance is essential reading for students and scholars of Criminology and Sociology focused on deviant online behaviour. It will also appeal to those working in related areas within Internet/Digital Studies, Media/Communication Studies, Psychology, and Cybersecurity.

The thesis analyzes a treatment of dangerous criminals on society with viewpoint of comparative criminal law in Germany and South Korea. In particular, with a focus on "preventive detention" as a "measure of improving and security", at first, basic theory of the Measure of Improving and Security is referred for the analysis of Preventive Detention. At the end of the thesis possible alternatives to Preventive Detention are reviewed. As a result, duality of the criminal law and Measure of Improving and Security will have to be acceptable to the Criminal Code, but the focus of the criminal treatment of dangerous criminals should also be successful treatment and re-socialization, alternatives that do not deprive of freedom emphasized to hold a dominant position.

Muuttuvat suomalaiset äänimaisemat (Transforming Finnish Soundscapes, eds Heikki Uimonen, Meri Kytö & Kaisa Ruohonen) is a collection of research essays and texts that study the sonic environment and how it is experienced. Soundscapes related to time, place and the everyday shape our perception of the present and the past. Sounds can be pleasant and beautiful, pacing the day or year, annoying, boring and everything in between. The theme of transforming soundscapes combines the research essays in the publication. The essays draw from various disciplines and methodologies: media studies, anthropological field work and sensory observation, textual analysis and close reading, folkloristics, archeoacoustics and music studies. In turn, the texts gathered via a writing competition show how sounds can be listened to both analytically and aesthetically, connecting them to local, national and transnational cultures and histories pondering what sounds mean to the listeners and how they influence the soundscape they live in. The study is a revisit to the One Hundred Finnish Soundscapes project (2006).

Since the beginning of reception, Büchner's epoch-making narrative Lenz was praised for its iconic quality, for the suggestive verbal mediacy of visual experience and the evocation of mental pictures. But so far research has paid no attention to the fact that this specific interrelation of language and image also strongly influenced the reception of the narrative in the fine arts. For the first time, this study analyses the complex relations between text and image in Lenz and its reception comprehensively, i.e. in consideration of the trias of literary communication: author, work and (artistic) reader. Firstly it is shown how the text-image-relations form the aesthetic fundament of the narrative as means of composition, but also as thematic, metareflexive element. Subsequently the different forms of imagery are analysed, which are generated in this way. The final part of the study presents illustrations based on Lenz and confronts them with the text. More than 700 pictures from 47 artists could be found, e.g. the expressive self-portraits of Walter Gramatté, Toyen's surrealistic compositions, the 'degenerative' etchings of Susanne Theumer or Thomas Kohl's landscape-representations.

This difference and subject-theoretical study comprises selected reconstructions of ethnographic observations of so-called practices of ‘getting to know each other’ in new fifth-grade classes at secondary schools in Germany. In line with the theoretical-methodological proposal to consider the function of temporality constructions more explicitly, the reconstructions focus on how knowledge about individual students is produced in the mode of remembering and expecting them and their behaviour. In addition, the reconstructions show how they are recursively positioned as temporally differentiated subjects. Step by step, the realisation of the normative-pedagogical differentiation practices of ‘getting to know each other’ and their powerful effects are described. In this way, the study provides in-depth empirical insights into the pedagogical practice of ‘getting to know each other’ and discusses the sometimes precarious conditions and ambivalences that arise in the process.

Anemonefishes, one of the most popular and recognizable of fishes in the world, are much more than film characters; they are also emerging model organisms for studying the biology, ecology, and evolution of coral reef fishes. They are a group of 28 species often employed to study patterns and processes of social organization, intra- and inter-specific competition, sex change, mutualism, dispersal and connectivity of fish populations, habitat selection, pigment pattern formation, lifespan and predator-prey interactions. This multi-authored book covers all these areas and provides an update on the research done with this model and the perspective it opens for the future. Key Features Contains basic and up-to-date information on an emerging fish model Allows non-specialist readers to grasp the relevance of a wide research area Provides accurate and easy to access information on each of the 28 species Includes guidance for establishing a breeding colony Documents that anemonefishes are useful model organisms for ecological, developmental and climate research The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.

The cornerstone of this book is the innovative concept of profiguration, a term coined by Fidel Molina-Luque to encapsulate the essential agreement and recognition required between generations in contemporary society. Profiguration emphasises the intrinsic value of interdependence across all age groups, fostering a holistic life experience for the young, adults and the elderly. Rooted in our social nature, especially crucial amid the current crisis, profiguration becomes a poignant antidote to loneliness. The imperative of mutual love and care is heightened, illuminating the path to a fulfilled existence. This book advocates a paradigm shift through the lenses of sociology and social sciences, stressing the urgency of a mindset overhaul. It calls for a new social contract grounded in altruism for both current and future generations, highlighting the importance of love, solidarity and dialogue. Beyond interpersonal dynamics, it underscores the pivotal roles of education, sustainability and environmental stewardship, aspiring to shape a more promising present and future within a conscientious societal framework. Tailored to engage scholars, professionals and students alike, its accessible concepts are easily comprehensible and applicable across the following fields: sociology, anthropology, social work, education, law and business administration and health studies (medicine, nursing, physiotherapy), among others.

How did civil society function as a locus for reconciliation initiatives since the beginning of the 20th century? The essays in this volume challenge the conventional understanding of reconciliation as a benign state-driven process. They explore how a range of civil society actors – from Turkish intellectuals apologizing for the Armenian Genocide to religious organizations working towards the improvement of Franco-German relations – have confronted and coped with the past. These studies offer a critical perspective on local and transnational reconciliation acts by questioning the extent to which speech became an alternative to silence, remembrance to forgetting, engagement to oblivion.
